Booster pack ideas

By Huhwhat, in X-Wing

First off, big ups to FFG for making a game with depth. There is no other game I would spend such money on and still be tickled and pleased.

Now that I have many of the ships that I want, am saving for wave 4 and love the quality of the models, let me get to the point; I want more pilot options. I'm looking specifically at the bombers, but I'm sure there are others to consider (y-wings?).

How about CARD boosters? I have my limit for how many bombers I want to run in epic, I would like, however, to have a more higher PS options. Why can a bomber only have one bomb? Maybe a mod that allows me to equip two bombs?? Why am I stuck with only two high priced bombers who aren't really capable to lay on the hurt with bombs? Or designed to use bombs? This is a great expansion market that requires purchase of the miniatures, but doesn't penalize me for having already bought 4-6 bombers.

I write this with the full understanding that making games is a business. What would CARD BOOSTERS have in them? A $5 booster pack, where I know what I'm getting would:

A) keep me buying.

B) not break my bank.

C) give me the customization options to open this game to higher strategic levels.

X-wings aren't the only ships with pilots. Set us free FFG. If the EU runs out of options, create more. Disney is retooling everything! Let X-wing miniatures players be on the ground floor.

I'd love boosters, but not for pilots. If I'm getting pilot cards, I want models to go with them. Specifically for the bombers, could do an Elite Bombers expansion. 2 Bombers with a bunch of new bomber pilots.

Same here. I buy this game more for the ability to play with "reelly kewel models" than I do the cards. I'd prefer they re-release alternate paint schemes with these new cards so I can have more variety in my fleet without having to repaint my miniatures. Maybe something like X-wings with Rogue Squadron and CorSec colors, or a TIE Bomber with white stripes.

go away with booster like magic
this sucks

What about scenario packs that give you a few scenarios and some new upgrade cards and bits for the scenarios. Of course the upgrades wouldn't be scenario specific, that'd be silly. I don't really want to buy a space cow, but some of the cards that come with it are tempting.

I would like to see booster packs of upgrades available, so that you don't have to buy a ship you don't want just to get the cards from it. I imagine this is particularly frustrating for players who want to play solely as one faction, or just don't want to have to buy loads of ships they are never going to use.

I think the pilot cards should stay as being available only with the ships. My opinion on this may change if FFG starts putting out a lot of repaints. E.g. it would seem a bit unfair to force a player to buy another X Wing repaint just to get pilots when they have already bought 4 or 5 X Wings already.

it will never happen. they make too much money from us buying the minis. if they gave cards in booster packs there would be a vastly decreased incentive to buy the minis

I hate the idea of boosters and think that it would kill this game.

I don't want to buy card packs with the hopes and dreams of getting something rare, or getting crap over and over, and maybe one rare and am uncommon.

That's why this game is so great. You know what you get. Your opponent doesn't have a huge advantage.

If they go that route is stop playing and in sure many others would.

One thing I hated about hero clicks. Toy spend a bunch of money get crap, then spend more money for one rare etc etc

I think we'll see more Imperial/Rebel Aces like products instead.

"bomber aces" "Y-Wing Aces" etc etc

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing upgrade card packs. 1-2 of each card, maybe break it up like an ordnance pack that includes missiles, torps and bombs.

I think FFG sees this as a "Living Card Game" type situation.

Boosters would contain known cards and would be "Expansion" sets rather than stereotypical boosters.

Lot's of people commenting didn't read the OP properly...

A $5 booster pack, where I know what I'm getting would:

No one is suggesting Magic-style Booster packs with random cards in them.

I'd love card-only expansion packs, but I seriously doubt FFG has any incentive to do this.

I posted a version of this on BGG a while ago (I'd link it but I can't find it), and it's now relevant here as well.

Basically, I think a lot of their overhead has to be tied up in developing and testing the cards; if the cards represent a majority of the cost but not a majority of consumers' perception of value, that's a very good argument for not publishing card packs. Hypothetically, if a B-wing pack with minis costs them $7 to design and produce and retails for $15, and their market research says the same pack without minis would cost them $5.75 but consumers would typically pay just $5, then it's an easy decision to make sure upgrades are only sold with minis.

Piqsid's additional point in the same thread was that FFG's expansions have so far included everything you need to play with that ship except for the movement and range templates--each expansion is self-contained. That makes it easy for new players to buy just what they want, and as a nice side benefit it means (e.g.) my mother-in-law can figure out that Imperial Aces would be a nice Christmas gift (thanks, Marilyn!)

But if they started separating upgrades from plastic, then new players or gift-givers have a more confusing set of options--and there's a risk that I'll end up with upgrades or pilot cards I literally can't run because I don't have the miniature that goes with them.

I obviously don't know whether either of those things are what FFG has in mind, but the more I think about it the less I think card packs make sense for the game--regardless of how much I'd like to have them.

I think the only time you may ever see card-only packs from FFG is if there's a "X-Wing Second Edition" that involves significant tweaks/overhauls of pilots and/or cards. It would make sense to offer them as cards only at that point since most folks would have the first ed. models.
