Has anyone else won a tournament and....

By Audio Weasel, in X-Wing

The store had used all of the prize support in previous tourneys and gave you something a little weird?

... what constitutes weird?

was it poop? like actual poop? that would be weird....

Mixed fruit baskets?

Office Supplies?

Phallic looking space ships?

A pink lawn flamingo?

A bag of 40k bits?

Ok, let me preface this by saying that I am NOT complaining. It was a no-fee tourney at a great store full of good people and I had a ball. I didn't expect to win, with a 2 full win 1 modified win record. It was probably the best I had ever maneuvered in a tourney, and my dice were HOT.Also, I had what was quite probably my best X-Wing match ever there. 2nd round. Damage was taken on both sides but no ships left the table until the final turn. It was my first tournament win (apparently I got it by destroying only 6 more points worth of ships than the second place guy had), and the last time I had been in a tourney at that store, my only win was a by (to be fair, it WAS my first tourney ever). I won a medal left over from last year's tournament pack and a plush X-Wing.

Dude, a plush X-Wing? I would sleep with that mother #$%^&* every night.

It has a place of honor on the bookshelf in my office.

Would you hug it and kiss it and call him George?

From my experience from working in a gaming store (A GW actually before they made all their stupid changes), when we needed to hand out prizes, we picked items that would be most appreciated by the winners, unless it was said beforehand of what the prizes were. Usually it worked out really well and people went home happy.

I have a feeling he'd do more than that.

As an Ork, I've been known to fondle the occasional gubbin.

I wish my local shops gave out plush Xwings as prizes instead.

those things are seriously not cheap

Well, like I said, NOT complaining, just thought it was odd, and wondered if it was a regular thing.

It happens sometimes. I've run several game stores, and run in to issues where prize support didn't show up/ran out early/I ditz'd out and forgot to arrange it. I usually tried to make the replacement interesting.

In the vein of odd prizes, I once played in an L5R (card game) tourney, with over 200 people, and paired by hand. After 14 hours, I took a decent place, and won a box of boosters worth less then MSRP, and a handmade mask made to resemble a character from the game.

My LGS is awesome in that they run a tourney every month. In Australia, LGS's are limited to ordering 1 of each game night/tourney kit, which come out every 3 months.

I guess you can see where this is headed.....

They usually however give out something game related, usually a blister or a set of 3rd party acrillics.

In 1 tourney I won a GF9 game mat which is pretty cool.

First thought as well.

Our LGS gives out store credit vouchers, along with the normal prize support.

Nothing quite that weird, but I did get a leftover medal for winning the store's first tournament in a long time.

My local league gave out prizes of Lego Star-Wars Collectables as trophies.

I'm assuming the OP was talking about Huzzah Hobbies in Ashburn, VA. I was at that tournament. To be totally honest, any tournament where you receive a prize and didn't have to pay an entry fee is a good tournament. Even when they had Game Night Kits they weren't charging an entry fee. So I would be perfectly happy with a plushy X-wing.

They are very new to X-wing and are trying to build the game. They already admitted that they will have to dedicate more space for X-wing tournaments on Thursday nights. That 16 player tournament was the most they have ever had.

They have had a few issues with wrong pairings and dropping scores, but they are quickly learning. The guy who should have won that tournament had 3 full wins, but somehow they dropped his first round score. But I'm working with them on new software for their tournaments.

Anyway, it was a strange prize, but under the circumstances, and prize was a good prize.

Is a victory hug weird?

Only if they hold it that little bit too long.

Awesome! You can't get Legos cheap anywhere. Definitely worth the entry fee (if there even was one).

I'd even take a Star Wars Lego Mini of Aunt Beru if they were passing them out.

Or the gonk droid.

Or Lobot.

Or the storm trooper that hit his head walking into the control room on the first Death Star.

Seriously.

I worry for that X-Wing if the droid slot is left unfilled...............
