I'd have to agree that it is an exceptionally cost effective game. Still doesn't keep me from wanting FFG to make card packs (Upgrades, weapons, etc) available so that I don't have to worry about buying certain expansions for one or 2 cards (although the minis are beautiful).
Disappointed in you, FFG
Magic and any of the randomly packed miniature games are terrible comparisons to X-Wing. In those games you can buy dozens if not hundreds of packages in an attempt to get that uber-rare card or mini that you want. In X-Wing, you get exactly what is advertised on the box every single time. Yes, mini for mini, X-Wing may be more expensive than hero clix and its ilk. But, how many unwanted minis in those random packed games are just going to sit in a box somewhere without ever being used because they were just the trash filler you had to go through to get the figure you wanted.
I kinda agree - it's not just the XWing that comes with the Transport, but also the fact you can't get the cards separate from the models. But on the other hand, you don't need any of the extras to keep playing and having fun.
Still miles better than Games Workshop.
Yeah, I politely disagree.
The transport isnt an entry fee. And even if it was its still much cheaper to get 1 of every expanision and the transport than to get a decent sized army for Warhammer 40k( which I stopped playing to play x wing). I have spent thousands of dollars on warhammer. I have only spent a few hundred on X wing. Its a very nice and more fulfilling trade in my book. I also play MTG, and really who competively buys $4 boosters? I dont play competively but I understand that the cards inside the plastic are rarely worth what you pay to open that booster, so I buy my cards from third parties which gives me exactly what I want. But I still have spent more money on MTG than I have on X wing.
I hate GW for what they have done to 40k. I love FFG for what they are doing to X wing.
Im not a competative x wing player, in fact i play maybe 1 game a week with my brother. But I have all the expansions and such, because I love models!
from the number of people i have seen post, that they have given up 40k to play x-wing, we should start a support group for our freinds that have not yet seen the light.
GW is evil and needs to die. I can no longer justify spending $60 dollars on a model, hours putting it together, even more time to paint it, look like a proud papa when i put it on the table, then 1 space marine with a lascanon hits it, rolls a 6 for damage and its gone. WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!! way to blow $60 bucks!!!!!!!
I find it ironic that the thread directly below this one is "Did anyone buy multiple Transports" and the OP is asking to trade for the new pilots. That thread is much better at taking lemons and making lemonade, rather then taking lemons and sucking on them.
What's wrong with sucking lemons? I love lemons

Anyone else wish FFG would buy GW?
I really enjoy building and painting models, and I really like GW products, but it is amazing to see how fast they price hike. Models that were originally running about 50 bucks (for the big tanks) are easily about 75. And that is only over the course of a few years. I used to build amazing lists that would be fun to play and very competitive, but then price out and see that the 2000 point 40k Imp Guard Tank list of doom would cost me around 750 bucks easy. Yeah, I'd rather spend 60 for pretty much any competitive list for Xwing.
Anyone else wish FFG would buy GW?
No, I'd hate to see them buried with the crap that GW has built up.
I was disappointed that FFG stuck the X-wing in with the Transport. It's how they do things with X-wing, so it's not really unexpected, but it's still rather unfriendly to players. We've always had this - it's effectively impossible to play only one faction in X-wing without enduring a seriously constrained upgrade selection, but it's still disappointing to see them leverage that for such a high price tag in an item some players might not want.
There's not much to do but endure it, and either play the game or not. Some trading can work to offset it, but not always. X-wing really is pretty good compared to a lot of games, although I don't consider "Not as bad as GW!" to be any sort of good statement.
Edited by BuhallinNothing else to add that hasn't already been said.
I do feel I need to comment on the topic of X-Wing being an expensive game. If the OP thinks X-Wing has become a "rich-mans game" then I challenge him to look at other table-top war games and their prices. I play Warhammer Fantasy and love the game. I own 15 very large armies (minimum is 4000 base/naked points) plus one 40K army, where 1 box of 10 infantry models cost between $32 and $49 each. And to complete a decent fieldable unit would require at least 35 but preferably 40 models. That's a minimum of $128 for just ONE unit! And that covers maybe 400 points out of 2400 for most games. Plus the paint, brushes, rule books, terrain, glue, knive blades, basing materials...... I still don't think Warhammer is a "rich-mans game either" but dang!..... not sure you can get much cheaper for this quality of a product in X-WIng.
Which brings me to another point (yeah, I know.. so much for nothing else needing to be added that wasn't already said..meh). If the fun factor for a game out weighs the price to play and you are happy playing it.. then pay up and have fun! It's when the price to play out weighs your fun factor you may need to re-think on playing in my opinion.

Transport doesn't contain anything essential to play, even if you play competitively none of the new pilots or upgrades are so amazing that you can't play at the exact same level without them.
But still, those with issues won't buy, those without will, and FFG will keep making money or they won't.
It's not that much new stuff, and its not like you can't trade. OP should really rethink their complaint. No one forcing you to buy. Yada, everyone's said it.
Just today I was thinking about how much I was planning to buy, and how much fun I had with just 3 ties and 2 x-wings, naked. (Not me, the ships. Though, playing X-Wing naked might be rather fun with the right people. =] )
And, that's when I realized, I'm spending so much much on a great game and I'm having quite a load of fun with it.
Also, I like the maneuvering and dogfighting too. I'm not going to get the Transports. I'm even waiting on the Falcon so my playgroup can have more fun learning to maneuver first.
The irony is, when the game first came out, FFG stated they had no intention of producing larger ships. It's only been our voracious appetite for the ships that FFG began thinking about producing these.
They knew they'd be expensive.
But, we're buying them.
They're not for all, and you're doing the right thing. Voting with your wallet. FFG will talley these votes, and that will determine the future of epic play (and whether we will get prequel ships, etc)
I'm glad they created new rules for them, so they're not necessary for regular play.
yeah, but the talley is ..........hey, they all sold!!!!! people must love this stuff lets make more!!!!!
my LGS ordered 6 but only received 3, i was lucky enough to be one of the guys to get one. and when you compare the price for this game and that of others, look at GW and shutt your mouth (that last part was for the OP not you TnT)
hell, have you seen the price tag on infinity??? how do they sell anything, oh yeah have you seen their boxes? 90% have boobs or hot chics. i will never afford to play infinity, and GW has priced me right out of their game that i have played since the 80's, yes 1980's you little @#$*
X-Wing is by far the most cost effective game i have next to battletech
so this OP is out of touch, have you played mage knight or any of their cliks? they are cool if your 10, i tried and tried to get into them, models are nonfantastic and game mechanics weak.
Infinity models are expensive on a per model basis but you only need 10. It kind of works on the same principle as X-Wing. The individual models are a little expensive but to actually play the game, its miles cheaper than most other tabletop games. I love the fact that for about $100 in either game, you get a great looking force to field (can't really say anything about the boob-esque anime boxes for Infinity...).
I still can't figure out GW pricing and it makes me weep when I want to start playing Fantasy. Privateer press can almost be as bad you but at least you don;t need as many models to play.
I've reached that point in my life where, if I want to take on a new hobby, I don't mind shelling out on the front end, knowing full well that, while there will likely be expenses down the line, if I'm having fun, it's money well spent. After that initial investment, I get to choose how and when to spend money on the game. I'm still riding the fence on the transport, to see what people around here think about it. My hands are full enough learning how to maneuver.

Strip Wing. Coined here first. For each damage a ship takes, you can either take off an article of clothing or let your ship take the hit.

I think clothes should have point values. Lose so many points, lose an equal amount of clothing. Killing Han will be very satisfying

I agree with this guy and the guy above a few spots.
For the money, x wing is awesome!! no need for booster packs.
Buy whatever you want when you want.
I welcome the large and huge ships.
They are nice to look at and good to have a nice for a geek day with the boyz.
Not to mention that you don't have to buy paints and the time it takes to paint them.
a simple and fun game to play.
My only gripe with this game is the pegs and the dials.
They should of made the dials out of abs plastic like the heroclix.
other than that I'm very happy!

I like it! I forsee swarms being popular.
How to win that format? TIE phantoms and heavy coats.
I just put those two things in the same sentence, didn't I?
Though, playing X-Wing naked might be rather fun with the right people.
With everyone playing XXX lists?
1-percent-wealthy in an already rich man's game
lol This game is nowhere near that expensive. It was a bit cheap of them to include a new set of x-wing pilots with the transport, but it's nowhere near as bad as you're making it out to be. It's 40 bucks for 4 new xwing pilots and 4 new droids, or 0 if you just print them out.
Comments run the gamut of my expectations regarding responses. I could contradict successfully almost every QQ accusation, but suffice to say I understand I am not being forced to buy this product. Nor is anyone else. What I am, what everyone is, being forced to do - particularly those of us who only want to add an element to the aspect of the game we enjoy the way we're used to playing it - is to scrounge up FOUR TIMES the amount of what I would normally pay (in truth, more like 5-6 times what I would pay when considering that most online venues sell the small ships for about $10) just to have 1/2 of what I want.
Whether I ever get the ship or not isn't the point, nor is whether the product is appropriately priced. What is relevant is the fact that the package is produced in a way that IMO is a bit underhanded, probably because it wasn't expected to sell without including something else - as opposed to the Tantive IV, which will be a great collector's display piece.
Regarding the Magic and HeroClix comparisons, if you are actually buying "blind boosters" off the shelf hoping to build decks or teams, then yeah it takes a bit. But those games have a secondary value those of you who attacked that part of the OP seem to be ignoring. Try pricing your collection of X-Wing for resell and convince yourself you can get everything back that you spent on it. I've collected a ton of Magic and other collectable games over the years, and have sold a small portion of most of those. I have recouped every bit I spent and still have ample enough to play with. I will never be able to say that about X-Wing. I would have to sell it all and still only get about half back if I'm lucky, based on the prices I've seen. And don't even get me started on LCGs, but that is neither here nor there.
In the final analysis, it comes down to what is fun and what is practical. This didn't "become" a rich man's game - it started out that way. You know what you get but it'll never be worth more than what you paid for it.

I don't necessarily disagree with your analysis but it is interesting to see the different viewpoints of what people consider to be "expensive." It appears from your post something is expensive if it doesn't retain their value and in a way that does make sense since if you don;t need it anymore you could always sell it and recoup the loss completely. It appears that some people only consider the per model cost, and in that respect X-Wing is pretty up there. Some other including myself go by a per game cost, which in relative terms makes X-Wing an incredibly cost effective game, especially I don't forsee selling the pieces at all.
I've got that, thanks. Put that on the aforementioned "I sold off the majority and made my money back but still have enough to play" list.
