Consider this an open letter to FFG. Other readers are free to disagree but criticism of me for my opinion is ultimately pointless and doesn't detract from the facts that helped me formulate my frustration and disgust with FFG about the decision as described below.
Dear Fantasy Flight Games:
Though I have every other ship you have put out for X-Wing, I have zero interest in Epic Play. I do enjoy the skirmish game - enough that it inspired me to seek out the ships, even when they were out of stock most places - and have a few friends that occasionally play it. Sadly, there's not enough interest in my local area to warrant competitive play nor is there enough interest even among the people who do play the game to encourage a steady series of casual games at an LGS. Make no mistake: this is a result of your own doing when you made this a rich man's product with your high-entry, low-return price point.
Despite this, I am still happy to pick up the starfighter ships for the rare kitchen table game or pick-up game on a lazy Sunday afternoon when there's nothing else going on.
So imagine my dismay at the realization that a company that prides itself on the (self-defeating) philosophy that with the right amount of cash, anyone can buy any product directly from their company has embraced the idea of marketing a wholly unplayable element next to an important element of their game.
Yes, I'm talking about the Rebel Transport. I will NEVER play Epic Format. It's a 1-percent-wealthy in an already rich man's game. $15 for 1 ship vs. $15 for a package of miniatures in another game system like HeroClix or the previous Star Wars Miniatures game is just outlandish on its own, but then to add a $60 less-useful component that also comes with a needed element for the established game is just insulting.
Frankly, no matter how I've tried, I can't justify spending that much (or even $40 as priced at several online venues - though I did note one of them raised the price THREE times to almost $50 in the last week) for an element that will just set on my shelf. Yeah I would love to get the X-Wing from the pack for my skirmish game, but not for the price you want me to spend to buy both.
I'm completely disappointed that you rammed the expectation I as a skirmish player would have to either miss out on an important element for the version of the game I prefer or give you money I can't spare (4-6 smaller ship boosters I would use, or 1 I would only use half the elements of) down my throat, and the throat of every other X-Wing player.
Granted, some people won't mind that much, and most of them would have bought the product anyway. That doesn't justify the way you have mishandled this product and added to the frustration this game brought with it when you first released it - that it will never generate enough of a following because it is too expensive for the casual player who strolls on by the boosters to pick up a $4 of Magic or $12 box of HeroClix, where they will get far more for their buck and have a stronger resell value when they dump out.
So, in closing, thanks for disregarding your customers in a wealth-disparaged economy.
Sincerely,
A Dissatisfied, Impoverished Customer
