I just got a look at the finalists for the 35th Anual Origins Awards and no FFG titles to be seen. Comments/speculization as to why this is?
I was supprised to not see BSG anywhere.

And no BSG. That is a travesty of justice. Seriously. That game is the best Board Game of last year, period. The only reason hardcore boardgamers don't like it is because of the bluff/player choice randomness of the game -- you can't tweak the rules to perfection because of the randomness of player actions over rule strictness.
I find it funny that the article notes the the nominees were "...chosen by retailers (attending the recent GAMA Trade Show in Las Vegas) from a list drawn from publisher/creator submissions with a jury review." Perhaps that's the thing -- this list is very slanted against companies that did not attend (like FFG) and promotes many games by smaller companies. Plus, our store sent a rep to GTS, and I don't ever recall any information coming to us ahead of time allowing us to submit any sort of vote. I'll grant that alot of people love Agricola, but when you look at all the games FFG came out with last year -- BSG, Android, WoW Adventure Game, Red November, CIA vs. KGB, the Living Card Game and more, it just seems like s slap in the face to a company taking chances and pushing the boundries of game design.
I was surprised as well, for the same reasons. Between Battlestar and Android there should have been some acknowledgement. The list just felt incomplete.
Well if FFG didn't show up to the GAMA Trade Show, then in my oppinion they are the reason they didn't win. FFG should be at every game related convention and show. Thats like Blizzard or ILM not showing up to conventions and shows that show of the lead technology advances in their field. Gen Con, Dragon Con, GAMA all are major ways for showing off a product. If you don't show up to give demos of your products then you are eccencialy saying you don't care about the products you make. Your just in it for the money.
In order for a creation to be successful you have to love making it. Imagine if Tolkien decided it wasn't worth creating a detailed middle earth or if gygax was only into DnD for money.
Poor move on FFGs part in my honest oppinion if they decided to skip a Game Manufactuer Trade Show.
The Game Manufacturers Association (GAMA) is the non-profit trade organization dedicated to serving the tabletop game industry. GAMA strengthens and supports all industry professionals by advancing their interests, providing educational programs and opportunities, and promoting our unique form of quality social entertainment. Led by publishers and manufacturers, GAMA promotes the interests of all persons involved in the commerce of games and game-related products.
Guess FFG doesn't want that. Maybe next year.
Had FFG been at GAMA I am almost positive Starcraft Brood War would have won Board Game or Expansion of the year again. It took the best Board Game from 2007 Origins and made it 10x better.
Just my specualtion.

My favorite local game store was at GAMA this year and I was disappointed to hear that FFG didn't show... especially since the store manager came home with tons of "free" games from companies to demo and play around with. He was excited about WoW Mini's and a bunch of Euro-type-games that I just had no interest in. He had all the games out and was going on about needing to make shelf space for these products and yada, yada, yada...
I don't know why FFG wasn't there, but they weren't missed; at least not by my favorite retailer ![]()
