Translucent Dice on EBay

By Osoroshii, in X-Wing

Yeah, i think it only took 2 days for Acrylic Evade tokens to hit the 'bay. WAAAYYY too rich for my blood.

Knowing how i roll, i would trade my dice away for movement templates... ;)

Since I placed top 4 I got movement templates aswell.

Congrats on the win. I wasn't able to make it to my local tournament to win a set, but I hope to soon.

As far as the eBay listing goes, what people do with their property is their business. That being said, I find it despicable that someone would post those at such a marked up price. That's what - 10 cents worth of acrylic?

It's like saying "Hey check out this cool thing I won! You wish you could get something like this? Well I'll sell you mine! How much? Well, you've got an honest face, so for you I'll let it go for 5 billion dollars."

I am definitely in the market for a second set. If anyone is looking to unload them feel free to message as I have trades and would prefer not having to go through ebay raking in the percentage it does.

You do understand how auctions work, don't you? The people buying them decide the price. If people didn't want to pay $127+ for evade tokens, they wouldn't bid on them. If people didn't want to pay $70+ for transparent dice they wouldn't bid on them. I'm of the mind that neither is worth the current going price on ebay, but I certainly don't think the people selling them are doing anything despicable. With focus tokens going for $100+ I put one of my two sets up for auction. Am I being despicable?

Note: my surprise is not that someone would sell them just that someone is willing to pay for them at such high prices. I was really debating on going to the other regionals near me just to try and win a second set of dice. It way be the only way to get them. As I'm not willing to spend that kinda money for them.

Holy crap the evade tokens are at $127.00...

I just don't get that. I can buy a 10 pack of evade tokens from AP for $6. Sure they're not the regional championship set... But who really considers that to be worth $120?

I sometimes wonder about these bidding wars you see on Ebay...

The money you spend on gas, airplane ticket, hotel, food, missing work, etc. to go to a Regional (with no guarantee of placing top 8) will probably exceed the cost of buying the dice on ebay. The price for those dice will be very high because of supply and demand, but if you can't attend a Regional how else are you suppose to get the cool prizes?

The value of those dice is the fact that you won them. Why would anyone actually pay that much for a set of dice? It's not like they're attack wing dice that actually have better odds or something.

Osoroshii , I fully understand the shock of how much people will pay for this stuff. I suppose there are plenty of people that can't get to a regional and have disposable income. Whatever, folks can spend their money however they want. It's still cheaper than 40k.

Yeah, I was really shocked to see just how much that stuff is going for! Almost as much as a Deep Space 9 from that other game. Which I'm quitting in frustration.

*edit* Since this was my first minis game I'm also still amazed at how much 40k stuff is.

I would consider spending the money on the templates to match my range ruler...but even then i would have to think about it.

As for the other stuff, i can take it or leave it. People are free to do with their things as they please.

I personally would prefer to try to trade. "Hey, i have 10 extra FFG stress acrylics. Wanna trade for Acrylic ION?" But that's just me...

I suppose there are plenty of people that can't get to a regional and have disposable income.

I get that. But we're talking about dice here, or evade tokens. I could see paying a few bucks for the alt art cards. But to me, the only reason those dice or tokens would be remotely special is because I won them.

I understand some have a ton of money, see it in MMO's all the time, people dropping $60 bucks a month to buy shines. I suppose you can only have so many X-Wings or interceptors... But still $120 bucks for tokens?

idk, why do we buy 3rd party templates and tokens? Just because you hold something at a different value than someone else doesn't mean that they're doing something wrong.

What if I'm the person who buys the dice for $150? Does that make me wrong, dumb, lame? What if I'm buying it for a friend who can't play in a tournament but loves the game? I would reserve judgement because everyone has their own reasons for choosing what to do with their own money.

Yeah, I felt better about trading some shields with you for the other card box Osoroshii! I did grab stress tokens off ebay though just because I never got to play in a tournament with that kit. Felt a bit weird though, but not with the box since I won one of those. And a second Y-wing card because now that the irregular engine has been pointed out I just can't unsee it. So yep, I'm a sheeple. Throwing down a couple bucks, maybe, but definitely wouldn't get stuff for the prices I see things going for now.

Because they're a good bit nicer, more durable and only cost around $20.

What if I'm buying it for a friend who can't play in a tournament but loves the game?

So buy him a standard set of dice which are every bit as good, then take him out for dinner.

Tournament rewards IMO at least only have value because you played and won that tournament. They don't really add anything to the game that you can't get elsewhere and a lot cheaper.

I don't agree with it, just can understand it.

I'm hoping I can convince the FFG OP guys to re-do the tokens again as prizes. Maybe alter the design a bit if they want to differentiate them. Just give newer players a way to get them. A brighter green acrylic looks better IMHO anyways. The Stress tokens look great, smoke acrylic and red fill. I'll keep using my AP ones tho, still prefer them.

I don't agree with it, just can understand it.

I can't even understand it. To me it's a foolish waste of money. If you got that much, do something nice for the guys at your LGS.

As I said, a few bucks for alt-art cards. That makes some sense, but $130 for tokens that you can get for $6 just isn't something I can understand someone doing.

If that was the only source of acrylic tokens I could understand...

FYI, I am looking for the regional Dice, templates, and evade tokens. Willin to trade a transport, Tantive (once released) or other ships or OP prizes. PM me if interested.

Well if you ever play against me, know that I'm a stress token impostor! But they were only like $15 and I don't get to use all the shield tokens I've won since I usually fly Ties...

I'm sorta half tempted to have Adam cut some FFG lookalikes and sell them on eBay as FFG-Like tokens. Be real clear they are not "real" ffg ones. If people want the ones that "look" right, it would still do it, but not be collectable.

I'd be willing to trade with ya again anytime. I don't see the issue with buying or trading for the extras. Winning them is certainly cooler than buying them but if there is such a market for this stuff, why wouldn't FFG sell acrylic sets? I mean if they put out a acrylic set for $20/$30 I'm sure they would sell a ton of them. They could even have different print on them to separate them from the tournament prizes.

Wow, normally I wouldn't ever consider selling this type of thing. I picked up a set of evade tokens last week, and it's crazy tempting when you're talking $100+ for them. I mean, that's a LOT of Z-95s...
