Playstyle reflect your personality?

By Blail Blerg, in X-Wing

I love thinking about games that allow players to play different styles.

Does your playstyle in X-Wing reflect anything about you?

I guess in a way it does, I'm at my best when I've got a very flexible list that allows me to respond rather than take the initiative. I prefer fast and maneuvrable over tough and tanky, original and unproven over netdecking.

And I play for the glorious defeat rather than the certain win. Though I can be ruthless. From time to time.

I prefer straightforward lists that can brawl, but with some sort of control or flanking element to provide tactical flexibility and, hopefully, get into my opponent's head.

So… yes? Although I'm not sure what that says about my personality.

I like sending in false targets, so I can bring my flankers around behind. I like outmaneuvering the enemy, because the best shot to evade is the one they can't take.

I'm not sure how this reflects my personality, because I don't kill people in real life.

In seriousness, if I have an issue with someone, I'd rather outsmart them than fight them. Immature, I know.

I am not one for balance, I either enjoy playing something stupid fast like the interceptor or awing or lots of hull/shields and firepower like the firespray and/or shuttle. Middle of the road ships don't seem fun to me most of the time.

Haha, here;s the thing. Nearly everyone has a playstyle/preference, what I'm wondering about is whether that playstyle says anything about your personality or how you see yourself.

In most games I actually tend to be able to play all the styles eventually. Even though I'm very aware of my personality, it tends not to have a big impact on the ways I play.

I'm still new to X-Wing, so I haven't really tried all the styles yet. My current pet build is JendonShuttle + 3 Bombers, for a powerful alpha strike and late game HP. It doesn't really deal with evade dice, because I don't like putting my survival on luck. Attack dice are more likely to assign hits, vs evade dice giving evades. Also, hull is more assured.

I tend to be a little risk-adverse, so I think it says some things about me there.

In Magic, I am quite capable of playing all the styles and all the colors, and I enjoy that.

In Starcraft2, I'm Protoss and have a slow assured style, but I have more fun playing all 3 races and any style.

I prefer quality over quantity, and trying not to sacrifice too much of one thing for another, giving everyone an equal chance to shine and provide their own strength.

Considering i like to play with miniatures and blow other miniatures up...Yup, I'm a big kid alright!

I suppose yes.

I prefer stealthy games over in-your-face action games for the most part. This is reflected in my play style as I'm primarily an imperial pilot opting for fragile yet maneuverable ships over, say, the YT.

Needless to say my most anticipated ship from wave 4 is the TIE Phantom, even before the reveal article was up.

As far as my personality, I grew up an only child that chose to spend more time painting and building models while watching Star Wars than spending time with friends. This flourished over time to an introverted personality.

I can see the correlation of preferring stealthy shadows and being alone over in-your-face action and being with a big group of people.

Very interesting topic.

I'm still on the up-slope of the learning curve, so I like to play lists that have some survivability. I also like playing elusive yet hard hitting ships. This explains my love for the Krasis+HLC, Soontir, Lorrir list that I run so much. In the future I see myself running a hybrid Interceptor/Tie Swarm. I like having strength of offense, numerical superiority, and the ability to hit without being hit...so does that make me a bully? Well, I guess I was born an Imperial player then.

erm... yeah kinda.

Annoying, aggressive, obnoxious, reckless, get stressed a lot, make a lot of noise when I explode... Soontir Fel favourite pilot much?? lol

I think this is an interesting idea I'd not thought about before, "what does your list say about you?"

Is almost like astrology, but I'd say a bit more reliable! :-) maybe we should put together a list

I can be very direct and to the point, with plenty of aggression. I'd say I play X-Wing like this too. Attack! Attack!! ATTACK!!! :D

My play style is opposite my personality. In real life i'm reflexive while i'm aggro player in X-Wing. Dunno why :D

Just thought more about this... what's more worrying for me is the tournaments I've been to my matches seem to be the one to finish way before all the others! lol :(

haha. good thread topic - i ike playing squads that r a bit off the radar and not what most people are playing - i think this makes it hard for people to read how to beat u as they likely havent seen that squad played b4. its athe same way i like to play chess. structure but also a bit unpredictable.

I think lists, or most choices that give you the full option of freedom without impacting your real life are reflections of how you want to see yourself instead of your actual personality. (take a look at role play character creation, you lean toward what you want to be instead of what you really are.)

I like rebel swarms, and minimum upgrades in any list. What does that make me?

I think that the way you play any game has a direct link to you as a person.

Well I guess my play-style says that I have the personality of a glutton I guess, Hedonism Bot apologizes for nothing!

I like Ties for their maneuverability and because I can ineluctably overwhelm my opponent, while not really caring about losses. I usually get too attached to characters, but aspire to the sort of zen that would make me a good middle manager in an Empire of Evil.

Moving all those ships around also makes me feel like I'm really doing something, not just lining up and winning by the dice like I do with a tanky Rebel build. I guess some would argue that a Tie swarm is more like that, but my goofs are at the beginning of matches and I do my best and usually turn it around when the formation breaks up and everything goes nuts.

I have had to adapt from my typical game philosophy of try out an interesting combo and see if I can make it work. This game doesn't really have those on a level of effectiveness I like yet. Epic ships are changing that.

I like synergystic lists with clever flying. My goal is to maximize accuracy while minimizing how many shots come at me, but the ships have to be able to take a hit because plans are never perfect. That means I like B-Wings and Hawks and Firesprays and Ties.

My entire approach to the game reflects my personality. I'm an ENTJ.

I like to be unique, and favor oddball or unique items, or unorthodox ways of accomplishing things. Not because it's better, but because it's different.

My lists are always Y-wing centered, although I find the Howl+many naked scimitar list very innovative and appealing, too.

For some reason, my games seem to involve my pilots getting drunk and screaming, sometimes sans pants. Nothing to do with my personality at all...

Thanks! Seems like its sparking some interest.

That thing someone said about how when you RP you actually do closer to what you want to be, rather than what you are is interesting...

By the way Brown Bomber, thanks to your lists, I've been a fan of bombers since I started crafting lists and I finally put one together that was really fun. Had a Whale in it too, which I love also.

I like playing more unique lists too, but then hey, everyone wants to be unique.
