Frustrating

By voidreturn, in X-Wing

I was at an event not long ago where someone literally gave all 12 or 15 of his dice away at the end because he rolled terrible all night.

It can be discouraging for sure. But I know most of the matches that I lost came down to poor choices on my end. Sure dice always play a part in it, but I never blame them in the end, even when they utterly abandon me, because there is always something I could have done better.

That's why I can't stand it when someone whines and complains the whole time during a match because of their bad dice. Or when they simply blame the dice for their loss. A bad attitude during a match really ruins the experience for both parties. Bad rolls happens to all of us, so I don't have much patience for that in a friendly game.

Now s1n on the other hand is a rare case. I can attest to the terrible luck he has with this game. It's almost mind boggling. I've played him several times and have watched his matches. He usually is always rolling poorly. I don't know buddy, but I can say you have kept a very good attitude about it during your games. I'm impressed by your perseverance and glad you can still have fun! (Even though I'm sure on the inside you want to just rip your hair out when it's happening lol.)

As JFitz has observed at our FLGS matches, it was so bad that I started bringing a dice tray in the hopes that bouncing the dice off the tray walls would help somehow (obviously it hasn't).

It's not just X-Wing, it's anything that involves rolling dice. If a game involves dice, I have to significantly outwit my opponent to usually stand a chance. Some people don't like playing co-op games with me because if I have to roll dice, it will not go well. It's not just one roll here or there, or one or two missed opportunities, it's usually the worst possible roll for me and the best possible roll for my opponent.

I have actually watched videos of people rolling dice to see if it's something I am doing wrong.

No doubt, skill plays a factor. However, random is random and even those great players have matches they roll bunk. Or is it impossible to believe people roll poorly ? I've played this game long enough to know when I was out played, or out diced. It is hard to win a game when your opponent fails 3 evade dice the whole game. It makes it rough. When he's running a high agility force.

And how often have you felt you truly outplayed your opponent, but lost due to dice. It happens, but at most it's probably been 1 or 2 games out of 100. That's the point I'm making. Skill still trumps dice over the course of a game.

When I play tournaments I always use the same dice as my opponent. Or, if we have only 3 each, I pool them together so we really have no idea whose they are.

I find this helps me focus on the game and not spend my time hoping. It's all RNG and psychology in those dice.

Of course, if you have Qui-Gon ethics you could use the Force and fudge the dice.

Dice are mostly random. Dice are neither evil nor good. They are the epitome of True Neutral, and sometimes that really sucks.

We've all had matches where you finally line up your 6-dice attack, complete with TL and Focus... and proceed to net 1 hit out of the whole set of rolls.

We've all had matches where you get five defense dice, hiding out behind that asteriod, and manage to not roll a single evade.

It happens. Such is the will of the Dice. So say we all.

True Neutral? You haven't seen my dice.... more like chaotic neutral

Enjoy.
