Frustrating

By voidreturn, in X-Wing

This game can be infuriating sometimes. I love the complexity of the movement system, I love the action system, I love the depth and possibilities of the builds.

Then I go and play a game (flying BBBAA) where my opponent kills 1 B-Wing per turn, followed by an extra A-Wing for good measure, in 3 rounds of attacks. It doesn't matter how well I manuvered or how well my opponent did. It doesn't matter how strong of a list I was flying. Nothing else matters. That's 28 points of damage in 3 rounds of attacking from 5 TIEs and a Lambda (with Vader). I did a total of 5 damage and I think I maybe rolled 3 evades.

All of the horror stories of dice rolls you've probably heard of, I have had them. Lost Howlrunner to a range 3 shot behind an asteroid with stealth device in 1 shot from an X-Wing. Two rounds of HLC fire, with focus, from 2 B-Wings and I rolled all 4 blanks on both B-Wings both rounds (that's 16 straight blanks). It's almost to the point sometimes where my opponent can just declare how many dice they want to roll and I suffer that many hits (or I declare attack dice and we just move on).

I know its observation bias (assuming a fair RNG), but it feels down right unfair sometimes. It feels hopeless and it makes me want to quit the game.

The dice gods are displeased with your tributes.

In seriousness, the dice are a very, very big factor in this game. You just have to learn how to roll with it and still have fun when your dice are failing you.

When the dice don't roll well for me, I just toss them harder. Sometimes much harder.

Line them all up with crits and evades in front of a microwave. Then put one of the their number inside for 10 seconds to show what awaits the others should they misbehave further....

One big I literally was going to throw them in the woods.

To the Op, it's a dice game but keep at it, I've had my bad times with them.

The less dice your opponent has, or the more you have the better.

Things that can alter dice like focus, or target lock, or evades can help.

Staying out of his firing arch denies him an attack

Flying ships with 1 evade dice are bound to take heavy dmg.

Focus fire all fire power onto one ship

When dealing with random number generator cubes you will have games where everything goes wrong and some where everything goes right. Most times it's a mix of good and bad, so long as you enjoy the game it'll be fun in the end.

Not to try to get all conspiracy on you, but not all dice are created equally. As much as they try to do so, there are differences in each one. Some cool differently, maybe this one has too much coloring, polyhedral shape isn't exact...whatever.

I have 12 of each dice (4 sets), and i have experienced your pain on many occasions. For me, what it came down to was a crazy-ass unscientific experiment in boredom.

I took each die, and dropped it into a dice tray from about a foot in the air. I dropped each die 10 times and recorded the results. Compiled the results, and took the 6 best from Attack and Defense. To make life easy i gave each symbol a point value and kept the dice with the best "scores"

Attack: Hit/Crit - 4, Eye - 2, Blank - 0

Defense: Evade - 4, Eye - 2, Blank - 0

I still roll poorly at times, but not nearly as bad as i used to. When i need reminding, i pull out the dice that didn't make the cut, and they still never cease to fail me...

Dice are mostly random. Dice are neither evil nor good. They are the epitome of True Neutral, and sometimes that really sucks.

We've all had matches where you finally line up your 6-dice attack, complete with TL and Focus... and proceed to net 1 hit out of the whole set of rolls.

We've all had matches where you get five defense dice, hiding out behind that asteriod, and manage to not roll a single evade.

It happens. Such is the will of the Dice. So say we all.

Not sure if this is legal for tournaments but I am going to venture and say it is. The Star Wars dice app? If your really rolling that bad then try downloading the app from ffgs site and use it. Anyone know if this is..legal

As an official FFG app I believe it is.

That's what I figured too but I don't remember reading anywhere that confirms it. However as you mentioned since it's an official app from ffg I would assume it is.

1-evade ships are not my friend. B-wings are a tough sell for me. Don't even have a turret to soften the blow.

If you play the game long enough, you're bound to have games like that. But it should even out in the long run!

Dice games will always be impacted by dice rolls.

Dice are also an easy excuse for ones woes. Yes, we have all been on the losing side of crazy dice results but all too often people will blame the dice and dice alone for their loss.

Personally I've been able to improve my play by reviewing the other components of what happened and what I could have done differently.

I'm not singling out any one person (especially the OP) but I've seen too many people complain about how awful or unlucky their dice always are. I'm many cases some of these people have plenty of growth they can make in other aspects of their game that will help their won - loss record.

Sometimes that dice simply aren't with you. Sucks... But as a casual player I'm a firm believer in handicaps. If one side always wins then give the other side and extra 20% points and balance up or down for as needed.

I've had...

TL + F Advanced Proton Torp shot on an X wing.

I roll 5 blanks

He rolls 2 evades.

1 damage total

Or, opposite of what you posted, I've seen B wings or falcons roll 9/10 evades, which REALLY blows.

My least favorite though was literally having a Tie fighter get 1 shot each turn. Especially infuriating when it is range 3 from an actionless ship.

I've had plenty of experiences in my favor though. Too many to remember I suppose.

Imo, what you experienced IS the reason I enjoy playing imperials. You actually have help from green dice. With B wings you more think things like, "I can survive 10 or so red dice". With 3 agility imp ships it can more be up in the air. Well what i mean is, average dice results means more when you have 1 agility, it is more predictable. But there is less OMG factor, which makes it less fun for me.

They can certainly die easy but on the other side of the coin they are extremely dangerous and can put a major hurt on their own targets.

Yes, remember that the probabilities are for large sample sizes, and that for small sample sizes you might get runs of really bad (or really good) results.

Yea, we have all been there. I had a game where my opponent declared me the winner after turn 3 where he was already a hwk down and no damage to me with all 4 of my ships tailing his. After not making a single evade after that point and having already committing to helping him build a better list after the game... he won. I didn't make any mistakes. All I could say was good game, but there was nothing I could take away from it as he flew poorly and I flew well, but a turreted YT doesn't care. Simply shake your opponents hand for the game and carry on.

If you really feel fouled by your dice, take a dry erase marker and mark each side and record the results. If after 40 rolls said dice doesn't have a good balance, toss it and buy new. Or follow up on one of the colourful examples above :)

When the dice don't roll well for me, I just toss them harder. Sometimes much harder.

This is an insufficient solution on vassal. Any suggestions? :)

I have had two instances in competitive games recently that every opportunity I gave myself in the movement phase failed to produce results in the combat phase, where my opponents' had much success with their reds. Net result, in two games, I have killed exactly one ship.

The list that I flew both times has 34 hit points and 11 base reds. I was not subjected to much action denial and at one point had three 2 dice attacks with target lock all fail to produce a hit. Thanks to Sozin's lady luck and the vassal log the analysis showed my opponent rolled twice the statistically predicted hits in the same game.

Frustrating? Well, yes... I'm a competitive person and I play to win.

It's part of this game though and I refuse, during a match especially, to complain about my dice or blame the loss on the RNG. Your opponent will recognize it if dice are a factor and no one likes a whiner.

TLDR: Dice can suck. It happens to everyone. #suckitupbuttercup #dontbeawhiner

The Tournament Rules PDF says the app is legal.
