My order from Applied Perspective came in
Nice
How long did it take to receive?
You in the Us,Canada?
I'm thinking of getting a set myself
How well do they measure up with the cardboard originals?
They bang on, or is there a mm of discrepancy?
Edited by Krynn007Mine came pretty quickly but I live about an hour away from them...
I love them, they're pretty spot on, and the fact that if they get wet or dropped they'll stay the same is very nice.
The cardboard originals vary quite a bit. They aren't a great measuring stick.
I ordered them last week on the 29th late at 11 pm Pacific time. The order was completed and shipped on May 1st. The order came in today, so about five days shipping regular mail. The shipping cost was $4.41.
I live in Washington state USA.
I took out my cardboard and checked them out. For the most part they are spot on. The 2 and 3 banks seem to be short by a hair.

Does anyone have the measurements for how big the various templates are SUPPOSED to be?

I believe they have the original set cast in titanium on display in the Smithsonian.
I'm sure FFG has the exact measurements, but the various companies figured out how the templates work and are if anything more accurate then the cardboard you get in the core sets. Which suffer from being made out cardboard.
It was something like if you should be able to form a circle with X number of Turn/Bank Y that is Z inches across or something like that. The range stick is simply 300mm long.
I think the 1 straight is equal to the length of a ship base. 2 straight is 2 ship bases long and so on. The banks and turns, I am not so sure on.

Which is what I am trying to do. It would be easier if i had the "correct" measurements to start with though.

As far as I know it was figured out by http://teamcovenant.com/ they had something up there about how they did it.
I think Adam at Applied Perspectives measured a bunch of cardboard sets and averaged them out initially.
Unfortunately, I don't like the number font they chose...
I keep putting off buying templates. When I do tho, it will be from AP. I've heard nothing but good things about them & I really like the mirrored blue ones.
Although, I think I will hold off a bit longer until (hopefully) he produces a huge ship template.

I have the same set in a different color. They are exactly the same as brand new cardboard templates. Not even a mm of difference. The guy running the tourney at my FLGS almost had an issue with them because they didn't measure up with his, but his are extremely old and have been thoroughly used. I had just gotten my second core set a week before (he was there and knew how new it was) and they were dead-on with those.
So, if you're worried about slight discrepancies: relax. They're perfect.
I was thinking about getting some range templates from Litko as I really like how they looked. But finances being what they are, I decided to get two range templates from Applied Perspective.
One fluorescent green and one fluorescent orange, $6 each.
This time there was an option to change the font. Imperial and Federation. I think my movement templates came in Imperial font so I kept it for the range templates.
Total price after shipping and tax: $15.99

Be wary that the mirrored ones are a bit dark, unless you go with bright colors. Were I to get another set, I wouldn't get mirrored again. Now, I also got the dark grey ones. My bad there, should have gotten something brighter. Scratches and smudges are also quite noticeable on the mirrored surface, so there's something else to consider. All that aside, they do look very nice.

I got the range templates in on Monday. Even faster shipping than before.
Last Friday, people were mentioning I should paint them. I really didn't comprehend at the time as my mind was muddled with the game. Then looking online and thinking about it, today I decided to paint them.
It was mentioned that I should keep the brown paper on it to keep the paint inside the numbers and movement symbols. Only problem was that the movement templates that came in last week had no brown paper on them. Must have been removed before shipping. Also today, only the green range ruler had the brown paper on it. It was easy to paint.
Then I decided I should paint everything else. Of course the paint was spilling over the edge onto the templates. First I tried to use tissue paper to wipe up the excess. That didn't work as it took up paint from the numbers and I had to repaint.
Then I tried a 3 x 5 card. It worked perfectly. I rubbed the card flat against the template. The paper soaked up the excess paint on the surface without taking up the paint in the grooves.
A simple and elegant solution.
