Talisman The Woodland Expansion!

By Nemomon, in Talisman

Hehe its rather enjoying zooming from region to region every few turns.. Poof!

In my 2 player games, my wife and I hardly ever try to break the game by overuse of the Alchemist or the Scribe. Mostly because ... we don't.

But I think I'm going to love that Leywalker (Ley lines are cool!), especially if I can get ahold of the Scribe, buy a Spell book (both from the City) and throw in the Totem Staff from the Dungeon.

Of course my personal wish list ALSO includes

Becoming a Lycanthrope

Buying Plate Armor

Ditto a Great Axe (my wife kills with the Flail but I'll take the axe)

Hurry oh Great Woodland, Appear now by Oberon's Command!

Another thing also is with the Laywalker in play other players have to be mindful where they are when they cast a spell :). Its like - draw a spell - "wow cool I can cast that"! - "oh wait" hehehe.

PS Any tips to get your wife playing 0beron, no matter how much I ask my fiancee always says "We will see". Strange thing is she says the same thing when my daughter asks to go rollerskating for the 100th time :).

This reminds me of a joke and my own "wife-ism" Since she is not the type to engage in these forums, its pretty safe to "assassinate her characters"

Joke: What is the best answer to give, when you really don't want to say what you really feel (no, for example)?

"You've given me a lot to think about" (this really works in all situations, work, for example?)

Wife-ism: Well no one's perfect, she has several food phobias and consequently really makes poor food choices (never, ever eats most vegetables, likes to eat high fat, food, especially junk food.

At dinners, parties, etc, someone says "would you try my ____?" To avoid being rude, she'll take a very tiny bite (and knowing she already hated it before she tried it), says:

"That's interesting".

Well at least I can get her to play sometimes.

I can give try give you a tip if you like. I have a friend with the same problem (if you really can call it that..). :) To him she says "no" or "some other time" and to us she says "maybe I should try it". I'm lucky to have a wife who likes these kind of board games almost as much as I do, still we hardly can find the time to play though. But last night we went to his place to play Arkham Horror as she went out to see some friends. She got home about an hour before the game ended and sat down with us to watch while we were trying to explain game mechanics and rules and pretty much what was going on at the same time we were playing ourselves. Afterwards she told us that she wanted in next time.

Hopefully this could work for you as well. Have her join the table during game play and explain the game while playing it instead of trying to explain game mechanics and showing her the rule books (which looks like novels the first time you see them) which to many people are quite overwhelming. Perhaps this will prove the key for you as well. Otherwise you can always do as we did and have her see another game. Because, let's face it, even if my friends partner never will play Talisman with us we rather play Arkham with her than having her sit out everytime we want to play something.

But seriously, asking her to marry you before having her playing Talisman with you... She must be something special. ;)

I'm with you Rigmaster. My wife does like to play Talisman, even though she says she isn't, she is rather competitive and a good player. She doesn't like fighting other characters - well me - and is better off exploring on her own. So she feels I should do the same, never attack her. Ditto spells! So what the frig do I do with them?

But when push comes to shove, of course she'll bespell me, of course.

Needless to say, having time to play is the real problem. But we both love playing when we can. She doesn't get as excited as me about the new expansions.Sso her eyes tell to glaze when I tell her how cool the new one will be.

She lives in the now. When Woodland is NOW, she will be pleased.

FFG - - you're ruining my marriage! Get that game done already! LOL

Well thats alot of advice :).

Had another game this time the Ranger, Monk and Nomad. Ranger on top it was the "Hero Rises" ending. BOY its hard getting that 13+ fate.. But the Ranger is super cool. At mo the best character from Woodlands.

A Hero Rises is a challenging ending, but you gain 1 fate every time you kill an Enemy. If you play with the Dungeon or even with the Highland, it will just follow the natural process of character levelling with trophies. It might be a lot more difficult with only the main board.

The Scout has good abilities. Adjusting movement is like having an in-built Walking Stick and helps a lot. It also combines well with the Hidden Path token mechanic, as you may want to come back to cards with Hidden Path tokens. It looks like an excellent way to reserve a good card for your personal use, for example a Magic Stream, and it's very thematic (only he knows the way to that place...)

Besides these 2 great abilities, he has no other features, except the not so useful abilities of a Guide. All in all it's a well-balanced character and it's surely nice to pick him for a game.

I use my Homebrew start game deck, with this after players choose characters the deck randomises the game "what expansions will be included" based on how many players are playing. What is always used is: Base game, Frostmarch, Reaper (without Reaper figure), Sacred Pool, Bloodmoon and Firelands with Hidden Endings being in play if Dragons is not being played with. The start game deck adds the chance of the game having: Dungeon, Highlands, City, Dragons and the Bloodbath and Revealed Endings special rules as well as allowing the Reaper figure to appear in the game too.

So in that game I got Bloodbath, Highlands, Dungeon, Revealed endings. A Hero Rises as challenging indeed but all the characters had early combat loses from enemy due to nasty event draws. This stuffed up their fate.

Still it was fun, never played with it before was interesting.

Yeah Scout (don't know where I got Ranger from). Your point of view adds even more proof to playtesting with new characters just looking at the character card and reading its special rules is not enough until you try them out in play. You missed the really powerful advantage the Scout has... Try him out you will see..

I'm keen to give the Dark and Light fate a go. But I do not know the rules given to them I know the re-rolling stuff but will the rules change over the "can't re-roll and re-roll" when it comes to Dark fate being used eg will a player be allowed to use a Light fate to cancel or re-roll a Dark fate use?

Also I'm making my assessment on the new characters without this "new rule" so it could have a part to play for some characters.

Light fate trumps dark fate - this means that if a player declares he is using a light fate, an opponent cannot pay a dark fate to make him reroll his light fate roll. Conversely if a player declares he is using a dark fate, his opponent cannot pay a light fate to reroll the dark fate roll.

This is correct, as far as we know. The limit of one fate per roll applies no matter which type of fate is used, unless the expansion introduces a different system that overwrites current fate rules.

Yep thats what I'm waiting for the correct way both light and dark fate will work.

I apologize for not taking the time to read through the entire thread, especially if the answer to my question is buried in there someplace:

Has FFG announced when this will be available?

The site says August 30 I believe. I believe at least once in the past an expansion came out earlier - - was actually at a game store maybe a week or less before the date. Sorta makes sense; they want the local distributors to have it as soon as possible and I believe at least once I read on the forum that a game store owner or dealer indicated that they get more accurate shipping data, because they need time to set up displays or advertising, etc.

Time to harass some store owners I guess!

Looks cool. Hope someone can define the little tiny blurry images. I know if I was a member I could get. My problem is my life is so compartmentalized I just don't want new ids and passwords for everything. I only want this forum to be 'my' forum. Likewise with my comic book stuff (yep, I'm Oberon on CBR forums), and my Pagan world (can't tell you exactly where that is . .. . "its a 3rd degree Secret!")

In real life most of my friends (who are Wiccan or Pagan too) call me "Obie".

Y'all may too, if it pleases thee! Blessed Be!

Here's the text from the cards:

Wanderlust

In order to use this Alternative Ending, you must be playing with the Dungeon, the Highland, the City, and the Woodland expansions.

* During set up, instead of setting up the Path deck as normal, shuffle the Path deck, and place it next to this card. Whenever a character enters the Dungeon, the Highland, the City, or the Woodland, he draws a random Path Card from the top of the Path deck.

* When a character with a Path resolves the Treasure Room, the Eyrie, the Town Square, or the Meeting with Destiny space for the first time, he places his current Path facedown in his play area.

* If a character is killed, he keeps all of his facedown Path cards.

* The first character to reach the Crown of Command with 3 or more facedown Paths in his play area wins the game!

Judged By Fate

* When revealed, all characters in the Inner Region are teleported to the Portal of Power and your turn immediately ends. Characters cannot enter the Inner Region for the rest of the game.

* At the start of each character's turn, he must roll 1 die to see what happens to him. He adds 1 to his die roll for each fate he has.

1-2) He is killed

3-4) He loses 1 life

5-6) He loses all of his fate

7+) He loses 1 fate

* The last character alive wins the game!

War of Seasons

In order to use this Alternative Ending, you must be playing with the rest of the Woodland expansion.

* When a character first reaches the Crown of Command he places 1 dark fate or 1 light fate on this card. Then each character loses all of his dark fate and all of his light fate, putting in on this card, and moves to the Forest. Instead of encountering the Forest, the character who reached the Crown of Command gains 1 fate and take another turn.

* If there is any fate on this card when a character reaches the Meeting with Destiny, then instead of resolving the Destiny effect on his Path, he must either attack Oberon in battle or Titania in psychic combat. If he is defeated, he loses all of his fate, moves to the Forest and ends his turn.

* Oberon has a Strength of 10 and adds 1 to his Strength for each dark fate on this card.

* Titania has a Craft of 10 and adds 1 to her Craft for each light fate on this card.

* The first character to defeat Oberon or Titania wins the game!

Thanks Sakar. Looks thrilling!

I like the Wanderlust ending! Cant wait. We have already been talking about our epic game with ALL the expansions! Get ready for ridiculousness!

Looks like Judged by Fate still allows players to have their turn. Hehe the players outside the Inner might have a advantage if they can keep up fate.

FFG need to have aword with whoever words and proofreads the cards!

The War of Seasons ending card 1st paragraph is non sensical andthe game mechanic isn't clear.

1) I arrive on the CoC and put 1 dark or light fate onto the card, okay so far.

2) Then each character loses ALL of their dark and Light fate putting it onto this card. So I have just put 1 dark or light fate onto the card and now I am putting the REST of my fate along with ALL of the fate from every other character. Seems silly, why put 1 dark or light fate onto the card only to then put the rest of it on straight after. bear in mind that there is now potentially LOADS of fate piled onto this card.

3) Now everyone teleports to the Forest space with no fate.

4) I now gain 1 fate and take another turn.

5) I get to the Meeting with destiny space and choose to fight oberon. Lets say that there was 7 dark fate on the card so I am now fighting a str 17 opponent!. Seems excessive.

Am I interpreting this card correctly or is this broken?

Is this a revealed or hidden? If you know from the start that this is the end game, you can try to amass more Fate, of either kind. So this creates a separate campaign, but that's what the revealed do, and as some say, the Dragon expansion.

If it is hidden, that does come as quite a shock, but you still might be able to work towards it.

Also, can other players still go to the CoC after the first one? Would that change anything (other than losing more Fate, but that could be a strategy for some evil players)

Edited by 0beron

It means everyone dumps all their fate onto the card and adds an extra LF and DF from the *stock.* Then everyone, now fateless, all meets at the Forest. The player who first reached the CoC gets a fate as a bonus and gets to make the first dash into the Woodland as they race to fight the final boss.

Everyone dumping their fate means

a) the more fate you had, the more health the bosses have,

b) eveyone starts out the race to the boss fateless, which is very bad when resolving fatebound encounters in the woodland. Except the first character who reached the CoC, he gets 1 fate.

Yep Artaterxes has it. So get to the CoC with no fate, and hope no one else has alot of fate too.
