Talisman The Woodland Expansion!

By Nemomon, in Talisman

Got my Woodland expansion in mail today!!!!!

My only spoiler: Be prepared for a shockingly skinny box!

For the shockingly similar price!

Bummer, the store where I reserved it, won't get it till next Wednesday. I'm thinking of going to another store and dropping my reservation of it.

Or does anyone know if stores will get it later. It didn't seem that way with Firelands, but that was a different store.

I told my youngest son it's available, he talked me into ordering it, so I ordered it from my favorite place to get games cardhaus, it was the 2nd cheapest I could find, but only by a few cents. This is my 3rd time ordering from them and have been very very happy!

I know most of the "big box" expansions are filler but the size consistency makes it look nice on the self. It's kind of unsettling that they would make the box a different size to shave the cost by a dollar or so.

I don't really mind, I have talisman spread in two boxes: the main game, blood moon, firelands and the dragon in one box, and the 3 (soon to be four) "corner" expansions in another.

I got the Woodland today, smaller box yes but the content is really nice, great changes to the game. Thanks FFG.

My friends are coming into town to get their copy, mine comes in 2-3 days, and I am now off to go play their copy!

Got my copy yesterday, gonna try it out today! Really looking forward to seeing how the new Fate mechanics affect the game.

Had a couple of games using Woodlands and it is a great expansion. The path concepts allows you to potentially move through the expansion fairly painlessly and get some nice rewards. The +1 STR or Craft value plus bonuses on the destiny make it worthwhile providing you can get through quickly. There are some nasty cards in there too, but I feel the balance is great considering considering the goal.

The fate concept really works as well. Really enjoying it.

Has anyone tried "Path Cycling?" You'll notice there are two different types of Paths.

- Those that have a helpful Travel effect but a challenging or unrewarding Destiny effect.

- Those that have a challenging Travel effect but an easy and rewarding Destiny effect.

Path Cycling refers to entering the Woodland, choosing a path with helpful Travel Effect, spending some time leveling up without going all the way to the end, leaving, getting rid of your Path, going back in, choosing a different Path with a bonus, repeat.

It is likely I won't get this game for several more days, shucks. Everything sounds exciting, though. I hope to give my impressions soon.

Oh and someone please, pretty please, spoil me about the Witch Tree space? Of course use spoiler warnings for those who won't want to be spoiled. But spoil me, c'mon, just spoil me!

We played our game last nite with all expansions. All. And somehow Firelands showed up. It was the 1st time a space got changed into something else, and it happened 2 or 3 times. In one case a Swamp space in the Woodlands got turned into a plains, and then shortly after got set on fire!

Some major Toading took place, it happened 3 times. Woodlands has definitely cranked up that feature. I got Toaded by Woodlands and wasn't even near the region!

I didn't get into the region at all, but I think 3 players explored it. It definitely is a unique expansion.

Witch Tree space spoilers - - please.

Sorry 0beron, I seen the tree, but didn't play in the board, and my copy isn't here yet. I played on my friend's copy... :( <_<

0beron, this is for you.

----SPOILER----

WItch Tree space (7th space from main entrance, before last of the first row):

Roll 1 die . If you roll evens, move that many spaces clockwise, if you roll odds, move that many spaces counterclockwise.

Thank you, fellow gamer!

Have yo liked playing the new expansion, heretyque?

Haven't had a chance to play yet, but I'm eager to do so. Hopefully soon. It's hard to get my friends together to play.

It is such a unique expansion, I often say how unique City is to the others, and it still is, but Woodland is even more unique. It has some intriguing game mechanics. They have really brain stormed quite well in the play of this expansion. And while I didn't enjoy visiting it myself as I hadn't made it there (it was too crowded with other players and still wanted to level a bit in Highlands), and my character was hurt from someone else in it, I enjoyed the unique game play from afar.

Black Friday sale on Woodlands for only $19.99 at CoolStuffInc for those who haven't gotten it yet. Great expansion, get it!

Not just a great expansion; Woodland is arguably the best Talisman expansion of ANY edition, and this from someone who grew up playing 2nd Edition :) !

The best expansion to any edition is the Timescape! :P . Too bad people dislike it without any reasons.. :( .

Are you talking of the unofficial one? I've printed it and we almost never enter in it. I don't know how closed it is to the original, but I personnally don't like it because there's not too much to gain in there, and lot to loose.

No, no. I'm talking about the original one from the 2nd Edition. There You can gain a lot of stats (Rad Zone, a lot of strong enemies and therefore their trophies, the Warp Demon), and a lot of interesting cards (Warp-Belt, Anti-Grav Platform, Chameleon Suit, Battle Armour). With a bit of luck You even may enter the Crown of Command space early in the game (Omnipotent Being). And the Timescape deck has just 40 cards which means chances of drawing something good are quite high. Not to mention that the Nexus space is a Heaven too...

Woodlands is great, but I don't think its the best. I also like Timescape, but again it is not the best. My all time favorite is 2nd edition City.

Hey, I said "arguably", Neomon  ! I loved 2nd Edition Timescape too, and got to the Crown of Command through the Omnipotent Being at least twice ;) . It was a lot of fun, but as you pointed out, the Timescape deck of cards was pretty small, and for such a tiny deck it had an awful LOT of repeat cards (I'm looking at you, Supernovas, Dimensional Rifts, and Alien Artifacts  !).

DoomaGB, you are definitely right about the 2nd Edition City being fantastic! It was a place of potentially great benefit, but also of great risk, given the strength and prevalence of the Watch units and the ease of breaking a law. The 4th Edition City is a tremendous disappointment in comparison, being basically a Talisman version of Disney World with multiple EXTREMELY unbalanced items (Flails, oh, gosh the FLAILS, Batleaxes, and spell books), all of which we've had to House Rule remove.
