Droid Scoundrels

By DaveBlewer, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi Guys,

I can see how these are perfectly playable. They are sentient after all... But I have a player who is talking about playing a floating box basically.

Now, if he was a Hired Gun or a Technician, I would be fairly OK with this, the guns and tools would be produced as needed, but a Scoundrel? This just sounds weird...

Should/can I at least expect a face and arms of some kind?

No, I say let him try.

Perhaps he'll surprise you!

And what is an R2 unit other than a riding box?

Oh I know, R2 is a Technician though, he isn't a con artist. I am not sure what a featureless box can do to con people

Perfect poker"face"!

Perfect poker"face"!

Heh! Yeah true...

Lets see how it shakes out, the people of Star Wars have no problem with dealing with droids... There is no droidism...

Switch (protocol) and G0-T0 (looked like the torture droid from A New Hope) - two droid crimelords (precedent).

Full sentences are capable of. Honest.

You probably will have to creatively interpret some critical hits but I don't see any reason to not allow it.

Talk to your player about his character's concept. There's definitely potential there, but just make sure he isn't being lazy or uncreative. Try and get him excited.

Also, for some reason, when I read droid scoundrel, my mind went to some amalgamation of Cad Bane, IG 88, and Clint Eastwood. Excuse me while I go roll up a new NPC adversary.

There is no danger of him being lazy... He is good at making characters. Sometimes too good :D

I am aware of droid crimelords, and have no real problem with what he has in mind, I am just wondering what I have missed

You're taking the name of the Specializations way too literally is what you missed. Just because the droid is using the Scoundrel Specialization doesn't mean that it is all things like a human scoundrel/conman/sneak/etc...

I should never have been worried. here is a quick synopsis of his background

Class 3 droid. Originally commissioned and used to write novels (or vid shows or whatever it is in Star Wars) on behalf of its owner. Recently re activated- has taken on a persona which combines the various swashbucklers, pirates and spies it used to write about. Novelist programming allows it to speak (and emotionally manipulate others) in 2.41 million languages. Has had a number of recent modifications. Pursued by bounty hunters following impulsive liberation of spaceship from local crime boss.
