Good pets for NPC's

Not being an EU guy I'm looking for some direction to take a far as pets go. I need something like a dog. Loyal to it's owner and semi intelligent.

Thought about just using a Jawa, but I have to much respect for them to make them a pet.

There are Vornskr, Massiff, ... and i don't know more by heart.

and the usual Rancors and Krayt Dragons ...

The problem with Jawas is they keep slipping the collar and getting around the shock fence.

Er. I mean, I have a player who desperately wants a Kybuck , and I'm thinking it might make for a good pack animal. The question is what do you (or the players, I guess their opinion counts, too) want out of the animal? A friendly little companion? Something that can make attacks? Something that can carry stuff? Something to nudge the players back onto the rails?
