Wil Wheaton

By Baphomet69, in X-Wing

I have less of a problem with him, and more of a problem with the level of nerd worship heaped upon him. He's just a guy.

That said, I did see him at Comicon one time and he kinda rubbed me the wrong way. He was wandering around the main floor checking things out and seemed really irritated when a few fans (including a good friend of mine) wanted to acknowledge him--even though they were respectful and subtle about it. If he wants to walk around in nerd ground zero, he should come to terms with the fact that people just might recognize him.

That show is responsible for a good number of board games on my game shelves...

Right. Actually I would probably have picked up more that I've seen on Tabletop by now if it wasn't for X-Wing taking up such a large slice of my gaming budget!

One of my favorites we have picked up is King of Tokyo. Great fun and quick game that the family can play together.

ok since when does direct TV have YOU TUBE??? i have Direct TV? have had it for years!!! however i can get it through XBOX one, but navigating you tube using an XBOX controller sucks... yeah i know they have a phone app, what they need is a wireless keyboard for the xbox.. or perhaps i could get that chrome-cast thing...

Maybe he was confusing the rules with attack wing? Is there a Wesley Crusher crew card in that game?

I get that you are making a joke but this video actually aired before Attack Wing was released.

Yup.

The show TableTop not only introduced me to X-Wing, but got me back into TableTop gaming in general!

I don't get the Wheaton hate though. He comes off as smug in anything he makes, but if you watch the behind the scenes stuff and actually meet the guy, you see that it's all an act, a persona he puts on because that is what he is known for. In actuality, the guy is pretty humble and down to earth.

I proudly admit I love the shows Wil has made and I was one of the supporters of TableTop Season 3, now they are doing the RPG spin off, I can only hope they do an Edge of the Empire episode.

I enjoyed the Tabletop videos pretty much.

I like how Wil commends the game situations - even it its a bit 'over the top' sometimes ... but hey he manages to transport the fun you can have while playing board games to the audience.

Even if the rules are messed up sometimes.

Thats what casual players do. Its their job to mess up rules - to let pro players shine ;)

And he managed that I now want to get my hands on smallworld :)

Doesn't matter that they got the rules wrong. They tend to get a new game and read over the rules rather quickly and then play. As a matter of fact, I'm an X-Wing player today BECAUSE of this episode. It looked so much fun I began looking up more videos and info on the game and within a week of seeing this particular episode of tabletop I had purchased my first core set and 2 expansions.

So yeah I'm willing to let a few mistakes slide.

As somebody who's run cons. The guests are stormed with people ALL the time. I'm sure he was just enjoying a few moments of privacy. I'd get annoyed if I got a break and suddenly lost it. Hell, I get annoyed if I run into a friend at the store when I don't have time to talk. It fits with the whole, Just a guy thing.

Honestly it was the Tabletop episode and this video

Wheaton is just a washed up child actor, relegated to youtube casts of nerdery. Just go away Mr. Wheaton. Have the digity to move on from show buisness and enjoy life among the rest of us.

Sheldon, is that you?

that convinced me to buy the game. And when I say buy the game I mean place a $150 order. They are just so persuasive.

Hu? What were those two beautiful women talking about?

I have my DVR connected to my router via patch cable. It also does Pandora and a couple others I don't use.

I used to hate Wesley Crusher with the best of them. However, I enjoy Will Wheaton nowadays. Partially, it's because he understands how his character was seen and he has fun with it. Also, he's an advocate for nerds ( example ).

So is this thread about the hatred of Will Wheaton?

Or

The hatred of newbies posting videos of their gameplay?

I've a reason for asking. Someone I know plans on getting the starter set and posting videos of his games as he gets to know the rules and which lists work for him.

30-45 minutes to play? I must be playing wrong.

Well no of course you're not doing anything wrong! I guess you're playing with a "souped-up" list i.e. you have composed your own force with named pilots and carefully picked upgrades etc. If both players do this you get longer games. These ladies (and I for one) seem to only have used the "stock" pilots i.e. Black Squadron pilot and Rookie pilot for example and thus can be finished within 45 mins. The cue I take this from is that they said "You can play it right from the box" if you're gonna put together a more balanced list, with different upgrades that suit certain pilots best, I would not call that playing right out of the box.

Those two could probably convince me to buy sand in a desert.

I don't get the Wheaton hatred.

I like the guy, and he's helped me through some rough patches with some things he's said at conventions. There was a little girl who asked him how he would deal with being called a 'nerd', and Wil gave her an incredible pep talk from the stage:

He just seems like a really nice person to me because of his demeanor.

I HATED Wesley Crusher on STNG. But I like Will Wheaton, I like evil Will Wheaton as portrayed on Big Bang Theory even better.

Honestly, Wesley aside, the worst part of

the video for me is Seth Green. Dude hasn't

been funny since Scotty Evil.

Normally you're correct, but they are using just one Core Set -- right out of the box. So, after playing a game or two (gaining some experience), a game could last that long. :)

I miss the douchiness of Aeofel.

I can get in on the hate of the Wesley character and some of his other characters, but Wil I like.
Like many here my collection of board games has increased as a direct result of table top because they looked like they were having fun. They will often fess up to either getting rules wrong or using house rules.
He puts a positive spin on gaming and gamers which helps to reduce the public stigma on the 'nerd' culture.
His blog can also be an interesting read.
yes he is just a guy. A guy who seems to be using his small amount of fame to promote the kind of hobbies and lifestyles that a lot of us enjoy.
I was happy to put a little in help fund Tabletop season 3 through Indiegogo and am looking forward to the RPG spin off.
In fact there are a few days left on the project.

Many people can't make the difference between Wesley Crusher (a character who Wil was given lines to say) and Wil Wheaton (an actor who portrayed a teenage character on a show I watched).

Wesley was a terrible character but Wil is a good guy. I met him at comic con in ottawa with my wife, who was one of his original wwdn subscribers (of which there were only around 700), and we had a great conversation with him and his wife.

I think hatred is a rather harsh word for what people feel towards Wil.

It is never hatred. Nor loathing. And probably not even dislike.

Personally, I just find that he can come across a little smug, at times.

Yes, you could argue that its because of the whole Wesley effect. But every character has an element of the person who portrays them, or they wouldn't have been chosen to play that character.

What he has done for gaming is impressive, and before I saw StarCitadel ( ) I would generally watch Tabletop and Watch It Played before going online to buy games (no FLGS here just GW). Rodney shows you how to play properly and Wil shows you what fun you can have with your friends even getting it wrong.

And afterall how bad can he be? He's a curler.
