Wil Wheaton

By Baphomet69, in X-Wing

So I have DirecTV and DirecTV has access to YouTube. So, Jonesing for X-Wing, I checked YouTube on my DirecTV. One of the first results was that Wil/Felicia web show, this episode being Wil, some other guy, Seth Green and his vapid wife playing X-Wing.

Ugh. If you're going to broadcast, read the frakkin' rules. I hate to be 'that guy', but when you're jonesing for gameplay and they just blatantly screw up and you can't call 'em on it...ugh.

Back to reality...

When she boosted by putting the two maneuvers together end to end I almost nerdraged, but it's not a big deal for casual newbie play.

Maybe he was confusing the rules with attack wing? Is there a Wesley Crusher crew card in that game?

Sure, they screwed up a few rules. But they had fun. And even more importantly, they made the game look fun. They don't always get the rules 100% on the games they show, but Tabletop is an impressive way to reach new players.

I can't be sure, but I think she bumped in turn 1 or 2. Also, Wil cancelled Crits before Hits and there were other things, but I guess looks and pleasing your Hollywood guests with funny voices and hot wives trumps rules... I know...bitter much? Not usually...

Good point. I'm done nerd raging now, you made the perfect counter-point.

And thanks (and sorry, all)

You mentioned Felicia Day, I stopped reading and started daydreaming. Sorry what were we talking about again?

Red-headed rebel pilots that I get to shoot down and then incarcerate, er, rescue...?

A little more on topic, they are reviewing a new game on a regular basis, so if they make a stuff up with your favourite game system, it is because they themselves are fairly new to it. I know that my friends and I made a fair few mistakes in how some of the rules went for our first dozen or so matches until we had time to read over them again and pick up on what we were doing wrong.

It was that episode of Tabletop that convinced me that not only would I like this game, but so would the other people in my regular group of boardgame players.

If you don't know the game, you don't know they're flubbing on some rules but even then, so what? The show is about different boardgames and the fun you have, which is the most important part of any game.

You hate to be 'that guy'? Then don't be, your choice. :) .

That video is what got me into x wing...

It was the first time anyone at that table had played the game. And it was apparent that Will was the only one who had read the rules. I can forgive him getting some rules wrong and not enforcing others since it was a one time thing.

If you want to watch good games on Youtube they are out there. Watch some of the stuff team covenant put out for the tournaments. They do a great job. Sometimes the commentators don't know the rules perfectly, but the players do.

Ok, there is plenty of room left for folks to post their positive experiences with the 'show' and this particular episode.

Feel free, keep it going, and kudos, but can we all agree that I already capitulated and reversed my opinion once others made their counter-point and I agreed on their arguments merits?

That show is responsible for a good number of board games on my game shelves...

It's all good! You mess with Wil, you get Crushed! <groan such a bad joke>.

oh what the heck, just playing around not wanting to offend: Wheeaaaaaaaton !

That's how i feel about MiniWarGaming's batreps. Nothing like watching some of the best Interceptors be killed by Han because he fires, uses Han's "ability" (incorrectly), then uses the target lock to roll those dice again. I know it may have been early in their videos, but it certainly doesn't make a guy wanna pay for their Vault videos, joneses or no joneses.

I must be the only person on the face of the planet that can't stand Wheaton. Something about him rubs the wrong way. He opens his mouth and I just want to see something large, poisonous, and with a lit fuse, shoved in it to shut him up. I keep getting linked to his video's covering different games, and not 1 have I managed to last more than 2 minutes watching.

Honestly... it was the first time I saw Tabletop (which I enjoy, much as Wil can be a touch irritating at times) and the first time I saw X-Wing being played, so I was actually drawn in by watching it. Did they screw up the rules? Sure, without a doubt, but as said above it's important they had fun playing. It's easy to criticise the video in retrospect since I know the rules of the game pretty well, but you can fudge it a little bit for their ignorance.

Wheaton is just a washed up child actor, relegated to youtube casts of nerdery. Just go away Mr. Wheaton. Have the digity to move on from show buisness and enjoy life among the rest of us.

I have to agree on this. Mr.W can come off as a bit too smug for his own good.

I think it's the beard and the fact he hasn't changed (except the beard) in over 20 years.

BUT Tabletop is a good watch (even when Felicia isn't on) and it has done wonders for getting people back into tabletop gaming.

Yes they screw up the rules sometimes, but WW will usually acknowledge this in the "out-takes" video that follows the game play the following week. I remember he did this for X-Wing because they got so much wrong.

If you are wanting a good playthrough of any game then Watch It Played would be my first choice. Not sure if Rodney has done x-wing though.

I was once of the opinion that x-wing -being a miniatures game- would not be my thing. That tabletop episode made me buy the game and now I love it. I should watch it again and see if those mistakes bother me now, but I think they will not.

Who wouldn't be a little smug - he does what we do, except gets paid millions of dollars to do it?! We go to conventions for fun, as I'm sure does he, except he's greeted by fans. He players games for fun , so do we, except he films himself playing them and makes money off of it. That sounds like an awesome way to go about life (with some obvious drawbacks that come with the territory). I mean, who wouldn't let that go to their head a little?
