rebels "what to get" and advice?

By Blail Blerg, in X-Wing

Hi all,

I've been playing with a friend's stuff, and I'm looking to soon get this game for myself and father, who is very fond of Star Wars and space fighters.

Here is what I wanted to start with, at $100 for minimum for free shipping on Miniatures Market:

2 core sets

Tie Ad

Tie Bomber

Lambda

Y-wing

My friend is also letting me take his extra x-wing and tie fighter cards (ie. wedge, howlrunner)

I wanted to ask, what other ship would help to give the Rebel side some options for smaller games, or 100 pt lists. a B-wing?

My next plan is to get tons of Wave 4 stuff like:

Rebel Aces

Z-head

Falcon

E-Wing

Tie Def

Tie Phantom

Tie Interceptor

I'm mostly interested in high synergy lists or high cost powerful ships. Keyan Farlander, and Corran Horn have me excited. So that's why I'm more interested in the B and A from Rebel Aces. And I want to be able to run some typical lists also.

I hear 2 Bs are used a lot though. Should I get a regular B-wing expansion?

Also, is Miniatures Market the best place to get things cheaply?

($20 for big ships/2ships, 10$ for small, free shipping for 100$)

Lastly, is there anyone with extra base placards for the named X, tie fighters, and Bs?
wedge, garven, howlrunner, gundark, backstabber, ten numb, ibtisam.

Would be willing to trade or work some deal.

5 of everything!!!

I know it is expensive, but you want to get the falcon. It will fill in your ability to field 100 points lists really quickly. It also comes with a bunch of great cards, namely Engine Upgrades.

If it was me and I was a Rebel player, the first thing I would buy after my second core set was a Falcon.

I agree with Hrathen,

If you're a Rebel, the best thing to start off with is 2 core sets and the Falcon.

I'd say you want at least 1 A-Wing and B-Wing expansion for the cards if nothing else. So if 2 of each is all you want, I'd get the Aces and 1 normal expansion.

IMO a single Tie Bomber isn't worth it, nor is a single Interceptor. I'd say drop the bomber and get the Imperial Aces if nothing else.

Miniature Market is pretty good, it's where I do the bulk of my shopping at, but other online stores sell X-Wing stuff for the same price so it's not really cheaper then anywhere else, other then LGS...

A-wings are a must-have for the Push The Limit card and the fact that they make fine little interceptors.

X-Wing for the cards. Specifically Wedge Antilles.

Rebel ships I would buy in order of preference:

Falcon

B-wing

X-wing

HWK

Y-wing

A-wing

The OP mentioned they liked high synergy lists. That being the case, get a HWK, a Y-wing, and the X-wing expansions sooner rather than later.

If you like playing with synergistic lists, then Lando and a HWK should be must-haves for you.

Lambda? NOT a ship I'd ever recommend in a starting set unless one really wants it for the Advanced Sensor to put on a B-Wing. If you're going to a Large Imperial ship you really want to start with the Firespray/Slave I; its a great ships and packed with some of the games favorite upgrades.

If you want to boost your Rebels when you have a limited collection getting the Falcon is a one stop power up that can let you field builds that should be competitive on any stage.

When it comes to Interceptors look at Imperial Aces before the expansion. Yes, the two expansion Aces are worth having but the other goodies in the Aces pack make that something to get first. That set is part of the reason for a resurgence of Interceptor builds.

With the Rebel Aces I'd still want a copy of each the A and B-Wing expansions. The RAces will let you field cheaper A-Wings and you probably want two, some may even say three or four, B-Wings so the expansion is something to get.

The TIE Bomber rarely excites me as a one-of. The Advanced gets you Squad Leader and Vader which can be useful but is rarely used for other things. A lone Interceptor may actually see play as a high speed flanker but that is normally one of the packs aces and often begs for Push the Limits for which you need the A-Wing or ImpAces.

Wow. Thanks guys. Will keep in mind.

I do like bulky lists. And I've already flown the albino space cow and bombers. Love the space cow. I'm getting second bomber now actually.

About the falcon, I'm absolutely horrendous at positioning and my father will not have played until I get this first bunch so I just worry that one of us will get addicted to flying space junk and won't learn. So that's why I'm thinking of getting it later. But I might just have to reconsider.

Can someone who plays squints tell me how they feel fun wise and competitive wise?

Squints are great for that pure adrenaline

rush or complete heart attack imo. That said tho

I love flying them.

Definetley get a B-Wing. But if you do, you'll probably want to also have upgrade cards from the Slave-1 and/or the Lambda. Maybe even a Push teh Limit from A-Wing/Imperial Aces. There are just so many ways to really pimp out a B-Wing!

I agree with much of the above. My recommendation is a third core set, and then the imp aces. Aces will give you ptl and some very nice interceptors you can fly along side regulation ties. Three core sets will get you six ties and three x wings, both are good lists and will let you practice with and against the swarm. I also recommend two y wings.

Also, as someone who loves the flexibility of rebel ships, I say don't overcommit. I switch factions nearly every time I play and that is fun. It also informs my play. I better know how both sides fly because I fly both sides.

Finally, I love mini market. I do almost all of my shopping there. Even when I make a small order the shipping is reasonable and can be offset with their purchase points. Cool stuff.com also sells xwm and one of my friends swears by them. I say pick whichever you like and stick with them to maximize the savings from their customer loyalty programs.

My friend is also letting me take his extra x-wing and tie fighter cards (ie. wedge, howlrunner)

To use those pilots, you need not only the pilot cards but the ship tokens as well. Few people are willing to give them away.

The X-Wing expansion is the only source for R5-K6 and R5.
