Phantom

By Nyt, in X-Wing

Yep. I'm definitely much more impressed by the Phantom than the Defender. Both in game terms and as aesthetics. The Defender's design has always looked to me like they run out of ideas and made a new ship out of two disassembled Interceptors. The Phantom on the other hand is likely going to become my favourite Empire ship!!

I didn't expect such a good dial (only reds are the two K's, white 1-turns, etc.) and I didn't expect it to start at just 25pts for PS3. Certainly it's going to be a challenge to fly it well (especially Echo) but it's going to be so much fun!!

In fact I think I'll proxy it for our next game and see how it holds up.

This is a lot of debate over something that's just going to be one-shot by an Opportunistic Ibtisan wielding a HLC.

The odds there are very low. Just saying. I mean first she's gotta get them in arc without a focus token. Then she's gotta net 4 hits when they got no evades or 5 hits and they get one... Good luck.

Plus, if I'm the one piloting the Phantom (which I feel legally obligated to given my handle), the odds are probably about 90%.

As I said some days ago, the tie-phantom seems a little bit overpowered...

the other ships are "boring" compared to the incredible things that we can do with the phantom...

and its cost is too cheap for what it is able to do..

and it is not so easy to hit and ionize, attacking with 3 dices, a ship who can defend with 4 dices, 1 evade and 1 focus...

This is an awesome ship and hopefully help the imperial gap that's happening however in what world are people living in that a phantom is able to cloak and focus and evade in a 1 turn. At best your looking at whisper cloaked with a focus before she is hit or any other phantom cloaked with evade (w Stygian device). And honestly whisper will should use that focus on 4 atk dice which is better. these ships are 1/3 of your squad points when equipped w the modifications. This and the z95 will have the biggest impact on competitive builds.

If you're lucky, you could nail a Phantom with a Proton Bomb, which would have a 21% chance of one-shotting it. Just sayin'. =P

How are you getting 4 defense dice (cloak action), evade action, focus action in one turn before most ships are able to shoot this ship? Best Case scenario whisper w stygium crystal gives you all three at ps 9 (w VI) and your shields will be down until next turn.

Whisper can take Evade for the standard action, gains the free Focus after the hit, and free Cloak after the attack.

Not the best setup IMHO, since you're not going to have any offensive tokens. But possible.

with "push the limit" you can.... Or Have I miss something ??

Your right I was thinking most ships would use the cloak action the first round but u can rely on whisper shooting first for the cloak w adv cloak device. Still should take focus action for the 4 atk dice whisper and use her focus for defense.

VI is pretty big on whisper w adv cloak device and cheaper. But ya it's possible

With at least 4 defensive dices (maybe 5 for distance or asteroids or 6 for both... remember that when it decloacks it goes on by 2) ?? And at least 1 evade or 1 focus? And possibly both ??

you can attack the phantom also with 2 enemy ships, but unless I'm very unlucky, you won't hit me...

Proton Bomb.

Splat.

Given the displacement options on the Phantom's decloak, the odds of catching it with any sort of bomb are about nil and none.

You're right. This is going to compete with Stealthed Interceptors for most dominant build once it releases.

Given the displacement options on the Phantom's decloak, the odds of catching it with any sort of bomb are about nil and none.

Unless you're flying a higher pilot skill, which is exactly what FFG wanted.

FFG's done a good job at making cloaking good without being invincible. 4 AGL you're not going to have much luck hitting it. But catch with its pants down and it's only got 4HP.

The Phantom's designed to chew up generic pilots. Look at the pilot skills on its generics, they're all above that generic's band in pilot skill. The Phantom, more than any other Wave 4, is built to kill low PS pilots. They're still useful, but go all low PS is now a gamble that you won't run into the flickerfighter.

and what about the maneuver dial ?? 2 different k-turns ??

and they are the only stressing maneuvers!!

whisper with Veteran Instinct and Advanced Cloacking Device is just born to do a lot of damages in a few turns...

whisper with Push the limit and advanced cloacking device is really like a "whisper"... you will never be able to catch it !!

Not really. Bombs drop before you execute maneuvers. It doesn't matter what your PS is, I know where that bomb's going to land when you drop it. And I can guarantee you, my displacement's going the opposite direction :)

Higher PS with bombs helps you know what you might hit when you drop it, but it doesn't do anything to surprise your opponent.

You mean like pretty much every other remotely maneuverable fighter in the game? The dial is almost identical to the baseline TIE Fighter.

I'm beginning to smell a troll.

it is NOT a stardard tie-fighter !!

It is a tie-phantom! With all its abilities !!

It is not forbidden to change the maneuver dial for a new model of tie !! So at least I was expecting a "slowly" dial...

Is there an established nickname for the phantom yet?

It also costs 36 points (for Whisper with Advanced Cloaking Device) instead of 12.

I believe most of the nicknames came from Stackpole's X-wing books - at least that's the first time I remember seeing them. So far as I know, the Phantom only appeared in video games.

"Trip" seems a good choice, though.

Trip for the Defender, Blink for the Phantom
