Phantom

Yes, CANNOT wait to use Echo.

Wait a second, Wait you can use adv sensors, decloak and move.....

Boy I wonder if the wave 4 ships will be out next month.

Yup. I think Echo is my new favourite pilot.

Great... I already preordered 3 E-wings, 3 Headhunters, 4 Defenders, and only 2 Phantoms... As usual the announcement shows how everything's way more awesome than I thought and now I might need to buy more phantoms...

For all the Imperial players who have been complaining about the ships the Rebels have been getting... HERE YOU GO

Sure it'd be expensive... but Echo + PtL + EU + Navigator + AdvS... Good luck having *any* idea where it'd up after decloaking.

So it basically has a TIE Fighter dial but with no 5 straight.

That's a 43-point ship, haha. I think I'd have trouble wrapping my head around all those options if I were flying it.

The Echo diagram made me laugh.

The things Echo can do with a K-Turn. Man,are Phantoms going to be fun. And, pending some testing, my dream of declaoking from one side of a transport to another may live again.

Am I missing something? The card text for decloaking says a 2 straight is used but the diagrams are using 2 turns...

Seems novel, maybe even potent, but don't underestimate the learning curve with this one.

How do you propose to do that? The ships are the width of a 2 template, so you'll never be able to clear it, not even with Echo.

Freakin' awesome diagram. I'm not quite sure I 100% follow, but these things are going to be beasts to kill. At least we likely won't have to worry about EU on most of them, since I'm figuring Echo+ Whisper will want the Adv cloak for the same 4 points. I almost want to get the testbench out tonight and play with all the possibilities of Echo's end result if he has AdvS and is cloaked.

The 2 Bank template is really long. The banks have always been longer than the straights, so a Cloak Barrel Roll will in fact clear the transport. Just checked.

Echo has to use the 2 bank rather than the 2 straight.

They document Echo. The slipperiest Phantom Pilot this side of Mos Eisley.

I see Echo as being very unpredictable with that uncloaking using the bank. But Whisper is pretty good too for only 2 more points, a free focus token if you hit. Makes using one to attack a no-brainer.

The Stygium accelerator vs the adv cloaking device is interesting.

2 points for a free evade vs 4 points for 2 more dice.

It looks its time to dust off all those Y-wings and HWK with turrets, because X-wing or B-wing will shoot empty space all the time.

I'll admit. I went a little cross eyed looking at the diagram. I almost screamed the song of my people "The Phantom is broken and OP" and then I realized that ship is going to be amazingly fun to play and good mental exercise to play against.

Really though, I can imagine playing the phantom to be a real balancing act between offense, defense, and maneuvering since even though you have attack 4, it seems to be balanced by the fact you will rarely ever have the ability to take advantage of a focus token and you'll be sinking a lot of points into one ship. Even 4 evade isn't impossible to hit since they won't likely have an focus token either, although the Stygian accelerator makes that a little more dicey. Homing missiles?

  • The dial looks very good. It has all 3 turns, white.
  • Cloaking does not appear to go away if you get hit, which is a big deal.
  • Stygium particle accelerator is an amazing buy at 2 points. If you use it once then you just spent 2 points instead of 3 or 4 for a hull / shield upgrade.
  • Advanced Cloaking Device is REALLY good at only 4 points. Against lower PS pilots this lets you stay at 4/4/2/2, rather than 4/2/2/2. This doubles your durability. Average jousting numbers are below.

advanced-cloaking-device.png

OK, jousting math, looking at just 4/2/2/2 and 4/4/2/2 stat lines. Assumptions:

  • 4 attack dice = 2.58x average damage relative to 2 attack dice
  • 4 defense dice = 1.42x damage mitigation relative to 3 defense dice
  • 2 defense dice = 0.71x damage mitigation relative to 3 defense dice

Values at PS1 compared to a PS1 TIE Fighter

4/2/2/2: 12*(2.58*0.71*(1.25*2 + 2)/3)^0.52 = 20.3

4/2/2/2: 12*(2.58*1.42*(1.25*2 + 2)/3)^0.52 = 29.1

baseline PS1 cost: 23 (25-2). Jousting efficiency: 88% (not great; don't joust)

baseline PS1 cost with Advanced cloaking: 23+4 = 27. Jousting efficiency: 110% (Go ahead and joust if you have to, but pray to the dice gods with only 4 hull / shields.)

Only drawback: Advanced Cloaking only works if you are a higher PS, so you are forced into spending points on a PS bid. So it's not a straightforward comparison. Realistically you are looking at 37 points for Whisper + VI + Advanced Cloaking. If you want to go really crazy and be nigh-killable, then add Recon Specialist and Advanced Sensors for a total of 43 points. I would much rather spend 43 points on that setup than on any TIE Defender.

Edit:

TL;DR: Advanced cloaking doubles the ship's expected durability. For higher PS Phantom pilots this is AUTO-INCLUDE. For lower PS pilots Stygium Particle Accelerator is also an amazing buy at 2 points. Either one or the other should be AUTO-INCLUDE for every single TIE Phantom, unless you want to try something silly like 4 PS3 Phantoms.

Echo and Whisper will be a blast. Pity the PS5 version has no EPT slot.

I *really* want to know what Tactician does...

Also, Echo REALLY makes Lorrir and his stress barrel roll and lack of EPT pointless.

Oh yeah, my bad for skimming it :0(

Cheers

It does seem like they've left at least 1 card unspoiled in most of the reveals lately. A bunch of Droids were still unspoiled in the transport, and now Tactician.

What I like most about the Phantom is that it drastically increases the value of ion weaponry in the upcoming meta. An ionized ship cannot decloak, and thus cannot shoot.
