With epic play upon us, what are the rules for when your out of damage cards? I played aganst a list that had 33 hull (Howlrunner + 5 bombers) and was wondering what happens when you run out of damage cards. With epic play I'm pretty sure you'll see fleets with more than 33 hull.

Ok, so you take any damage cards on destroyed craft and shuffle them into a new deck. If in the unlikely event all 33 are on the table and no ships are destroyed, you use a placeholder which counts as one damage (including crits, so no additional effect).
It's real easy to miss, but the rule book does address this, on page 21 in the box labeled component limitations.

As noted you "reshuffle" any already used damage cards and if there aren't enough you start using place holders which happen to negate hits.
It may not be tournament official but if I emptied a damage deck I would replace all unknown face-down damage cards (ones that have never been face-up and if no one remembers then it's always been face down) with those "placeholders" and deal a face-up card out of the deck whenever one is needed for something.
There are 33 damage cards in the deck.
The most hull that a single ship can have is 7 for the empire (Bomber/Firespray + Hull Upgrade). The most you can find on a Rebel ship is a Named Falcon pilot, so you'd need at least a 200 point game to pass 33 damage cards being used at once.
5 Bombers with Hull Upgrades is sufficient to survive 33 damage cards, if it is spread evenly. As you can afford 6 bombers in a single fleet (36 total HP, sans Hull Upgrade), this is actually a possibility.

Forgive me, it's late and it escapes me - but isn't there an ability somewhere (current or spoiled) that allows you to take a face-down damage card and flip it face-up? If so, then all the face-down cards would be potentially face-up if this ability is in play. So removing them and replacing with a placeholder would not be feasible.
Granted this is a corner case, but as mentioned with Epic play it may become an issue.

Epic play is 300 points each side, so this could be a real possibility.
As you mentioned. ![]()

Saboteur is not often used. It is very situational, and only has a 50% shot at doing anything.
I love the idea of it on a Phantom, though. You can't hit me, but I can retroactively Crit you ![]()

It would be theoretically possible to get every damage card dealt turned face-up at some point. At that point you'd pretty much be force to go with the actual rules and just use placeholders for any additional damage card with no crit effects possible. Two other notes:
1. If you replace the face down cards with placeholder using my suggestion you'd trade them for an actual card if you need to turn it face-up.
2. I you have all the damage cards deal out and they are face up I'm thinking someone has already screwed up that game. Consider that is 40 points of damage (33 cards + 7 direct hits) and if you assume an average of 3 hull per ship that means you need to have 20 ships which are all one hit away from destruction. If damage is getting spread that thin but no ships are lost I don't think someone is playing wisely.
3. Ok, you do "deal" cards to destroyed ships if called for but placeholders don't hurt much there.
It would be theoretically possible to get every damage card dealt turned face-up at some point.
However, there are some cards (4?, 6?) that have an effect (e.g. receive one stress token) and then immediately get flipped face down, so I don't think it would actually be possible to have them all face up at once.

That is the case where you may not have a card physically "face-up" but it has been revealed and would be a known card. In normal play if you deal that card to a ship face up it could do its thing and then turn face up; now unless it has another face down card you should still "know" what card it is such that turning it face-up again with a Saboteur will result in the same card it was when it was turned face-down.
I'd advocate for only replacing unknown damage cards with placeholders.
Well, in a 300 point game... The maximum number of hull points available is...
12 bombers w/ HU = (16+3) * 12 = 228 points
84 hull
4 TIE w/ HU = (12+3) * 4 = 288 points
16 hull
1 TIE = 12 = 300 points
3 hull
Total Hull = 103 total.
Which means the max cards dealt at one time would be 86. Given, you could be overkilled by 6 damage (APT w/ Jan + Opp = 7 dice = 6 overkill)... so the most you could DEAL would be 205 cards.
Not bad ![]()
Focus firing means that ships die before other ships loose a shield. One damage deck for 300 points of ships should suffice.

And if we're honest probably not all that effective against a Reinforced ship with the right upgrades. While there could be 86 cards "sitting" on ships I strongly suspect the actual number would be far lower than that.
