Carcharodon Devestator

By htsmithium, in Deathwatch

So I am supposed to start playing in a game soon and the GM has asked for us to come up with character concepts. I've had the idea for a Carcharodon devastator in my head for a while as something truly horrifying to face. The image of a pale, black eyed killer mowing down all of his enemies in complete silence really stands out to me ( for some reason I always image an assault cannon here.). The problem is that the chapter seems to be built to go the exact opposite route and I do not want to be a hindrance to my future team ( not sure what everyone else is taking)

The question is will this character work?

As an alternative I was looking at a kill marine from the same chapter, the image of a Carcharodon being the public face of the deathwatch always cracks me up :D

Any Space Marine will work, don't worry. You can't go wrong in this game. Just as long as you don't roll badly on all characteristic rolls. Buy Forging the Bond from Rites of Battle on Rank 2 if your brothers have chapter-specific squad mode abilities that can assist you (Dark Angels and successors, for example, or Imperial Fists).

From Honour the Chapter:

The Carcharodons prefer fighting at close range, either attacking with point-blank weapons fire, or in melee.

But they don't ban Devastators, so it could work.

Maybe your chapter got tired of your uncommon ways and sent you to the Deathwatch :D

And you would find your Solo ability near to useless.

Not getting +5 to a couple of your Specialty's core stats is not going to make your character completely inferior. Just get high BS and gear and you will be fine. And for those situations where your Dev is forced into melee, they should be able to handle themselves okay.

Okay is an understatement. Have you seen the Defensive Stance? Can you imagine what a Devastator with HB could do with that?

Off topic of Carcharodon Devs, but I made some chapter relics for my Assault Marine. One might fit for you though

Helm of the Predator-A Mk6 helm created by a gifted Tech-Marine modeled after the visage of a shark. The terrifying mask increases intimidation amongst non Astartes, and the targeting system is of rare and intricate design that also incorporates a preysense filter increasing fighting abilities at night. The increase to a hunter’s senses also lends 1D5 additional degrees of success to any Search or Scrutiny tests.

Convey all the regular perks of a Mk 6 Corvus helmet aswell as

+20 to Perception (Sight) tests in the dark

+10 to Intimidation tests to all non Astartes

+10 to BS

AP9(Head) Req 40, Renown: Distinguished

It might help for you later on when you're progressed abit. I made a bunch of stuff since we don't get any love and I thought I better make something that wasn't just for an Assault Marine haha. Feel free to use it or not. Or mod it. It's all yours :)

Thanks for the replies guys,

on a similar note has anyone have any experience with the Atomizer cannon from rights of battle. I was just looking down the road for my character a bit and thought that this thing might make for a good use of the signature wargear talent.

I don't think Defensive Stance lets you shoot a heavy weapon in melee, regardless. The guy who consistently played a Dev in my group soon learned to trick out his pistol.

The Defensive Stance of the Carcharodons let's you move out of melee combat freely. What do you think happens next with the Devastator and his heavy weapon being in Point-Blank range and having a half action to spare? And it's Sustained, which means pay once and use whenever you want to.

In short: Carcharodons Devastators with SS heavy weapons (ML, MM, LC) are a very viable combination. Who cares about the Solo Mode ability and Attack Pattern if you have that?

(Or take a Heavy Bolter and DW Suspensors. demonio.gif )

Oh, I thought you were referring to that one Dev-only talent.

Unless you want to actually benefit from other Patterns :P

Well, Hordes in melee won't be impressed. Unless you have the ML + frags of course.

Haven't really used it. Though if you're the only person who can reliably shred hordes I would suggest you get used to the HB + metal storm.

Sorry to disagree. While yes a HB works wonders against a horde(with or with out metal storm) for the non-Devastator a Storm Bolter works wonders as well.

I consider the storm bolter a perfect example of a weapon so badly-designed and with such overpowered baseline rules that it's game breaking. Post-errata it has a heavier volume of fire than a heavy bolter. That is ridiculous.

That's because the designers assume that if one shot hits, the parallel shot must hit too. I rule that only every other time the additional barrel hits. Which means that for every 2 hits, you get an extra hit with storm with me (extra hits dont count against the ROF limit, of course). If you use S/3/- or S/-/3 for Bolters, Storm shouldn't be too bad.
