Worst out of the box paint job

By Shanester40, in X-Wing

Eeeewwwww . . .

Heh, I doubt mine will be most folk's cup of tea, but this is the Lambda I'm working on for a friend: http://instagram.com/p/nEbJGkiVcB/

My only question is, how has a ship that spends so much time in an Oxygen Free Environment Oxidized so much...

Paint job is cool. Rust in Space confuses me. :P

Fighter craft and shuttles would spend more time in oxygen filled hangars then in the emptiness of space.
And it got enough water exposure in a hanger to make it rust? The point still stands. Rust happens when things get wet or are in humid environments frequently. Hangars wouldn't be humid... You'd have to wash your ship daily to make it that rusty...

If the hangar was on Felucia or on a Mon Calamari warship, then I can see it rusting badly.

Ya know, all kinds of ships in Star Wars went down into the surface of planets too.

I like it, very different but very cool, I think they should bring out a series of pilots that can almost jump into anything, this then leads onto a possible third faction, like a gang of smugglers!

Thanks for the feedback, guys! Our thought was that a Lambda crewed by independent bounty hunters rather than Imperial military would probably spend much more time planetside than on ships.

I have one of my x wings that looks like someone held the spray paint can a little too close for too long. Whenever I use it I always make sure it's on the guy I think will die first.

I got in at the beginning, so all of my X-wings are the older ones.

I knew they had some issues - sloppy paint, oddly canted engines, cannons askew. Nothing QUITE bad enough to try sending them in for replacements, but not great, either.

Then I got the transport and the NEW X-wing is so pretty and so well done!

All the rest just look like boiled farts, by comparison. :(

...apart from the Shuttle which I have to say is appalling, you can see the brush strokes...

Dude.

Mine has a fingerprint.

That is residual galactic space dust!

I wish I had the confidence and skill to paint my models. However I have no previous experience with model painting...and I suck at art.

actually x-wing is the ideal game for getting your feet wet in this area.

a) when you start you don't have to paint "all" your models since they have a nice original coloring. So you can tryout on single models without creating half-painted armies, which are worse than unpainted ones.

b) you can paint on the existing color without problems, no need to strip paints or add another base coat if you don't want to. This allows for starting with simple things like adding some details, squad colors, rust and dust etc and one isn't required to start from scratch.

Say I wanted to eventually repaint an entire ship. Would I apply a brand new base coat or do I strip the paint off?

I would probably go with a thin new base coat. I've read about some ship dissolving issues in certain attempts to strip the paint, don't know which are usable here.

If you are going for one colour for the basic/background look, just use that as new base coat.

You can paint over the existing paint without any problems. If you want to strip the paint, brake fluid works pretty good, and I haven't heard of any problems with the plastic used in these miniatures.

Or Death Star Mark II if you're an SSD... ;p

Rust does not happen fast. It takes years of exposure. Especially on high quality spaceship hull materials... Spaceships popping in and out of atmo just aren't likely to wind up rusty.

Maybe flying atmospheric combat maneuvers in the vacuum of space increases the rust quotient?

A ship like the GR 75 probably spends more than half is life sitting on the ground somewhere being loaded and unloaded. I imagine the rebels are not buying new ones, they are getting whatever they can find. Park any of these by the ocean, and they will rust quickly. Point being that the atmosphere of these planets is all very different. Rust may take a long time here in some environments, but happens quickly in the right conditions. The transports on hoth just sat around until they were needed for evacuation. Oh, and these minis are probably being painted by people making a dollar or two a day. In a sweat shop somewhere. I think they are pretty well done for the most part, but I am willing to give them a little grace.

Ebak- get some other cheap models- any kind that have similar levels of detail. Dry brushing is fairly

easy to learn and there are companies that sell special brushes just for that- some are just cut flat

across, some are like little sponges. Practice on the cheap model kits until you get to a level of ability

that you're happy with, then try on the X-Wing minis. Some hobby stores have videos and DVDs showing

how to do this. Others have books, but the videos are better. You may even find videos on YouTube showing

how to paint!

I really like what you did with that.. the blues are nice, and I like the yellow accents.. then again I am part swedish too.. lol.. great paint job though.

Oh, no- a Swede! Snalla, I kid you! I once knew a lovely Swedish girl- she was a teacher working in Umea. Art and French. But she met another guy. C'est la vie. But you're right- that shuttle paintjob is very reminiscant of the Svenska flag. And I like the way the detail is picked out and the light rust shading. Nice work!
