Babaganoosh's Repaints

By Babaganoosh, in X-Wing

Hey all,

As a Warhammer 40k ex-pat, I feel the urge to paint every mini I own, even if it's only a little bit. I also don't like to use anything that's too well-known; I'd rather make up the fluff for my minis. I started by changing the squadron markings and painting the astromechs on my rebel fighters.

Recently, I worked out squadron markings as well.

I painted my X-wings as "Reefbuzzer Squadron", (my own creation), with blue squadron markings and a squadron insignia on the nosecone. I've got four painted up, enough for a flight from the squadron. Here's some pictures:

For the second installment of my repaints, I'm putting up my two other rebel squadrons; Blackmoon and Pinnacle. Blackmoon is a fast-attack squadron currently made up of A-wings, with e-wings on the way. Pinnacle is a heavy attack squadron made up of y-wings and b-wings.

Love the weathering on the B's

Those absolutley suck. KIDDING,

One day I'm gonna get the nerve up and try my hand at an Awing.

Until then I'm just gonna look at yours an dream.

Coming from 40k as well i have always thought it would be fun to paint x-wing ships. I especially like those a-wings, they look fantastic.

It is a lot of fun, yeah. I usually just paint over the original paintjob and that seems to work fine. The main downside is that the Imperials don't really lend themselves to repainting, given that the empire's ships are devoid of personality according to the fluff of star wars, with very few exceptions. I've weathered mine a little bit but haven't gone far past that.

I love painting my rebels, and love flying with them personalized... and for that reason, I can't see myself playing imps because it's not right to have non-uniform TIEs. At some point I'll probably paint all of them back to the gray since I thinkthey look better like that, but they're still not unique. I like flying Wedge in his X wing, and Corran in his E wing inspired by his CorSec X wing paint job... Etc.

Out of curiosity, is your final visible layer a wash?

I'm in the middle of some repaints, and I can't quite figure out how I'd like the finish to look. A wash gives a gritty, weathered look, but it also sort of dulls the whole thing down, and I'm somewhat partial to the bright, clean look that the minis have with the standard factory paintjob.

Try doing a really thin wash or just"pin-washing" the parts you want to darken (deepest recesses, shadow areas, etc...)

On the E-Wings, yeah it's a wash. I wanted to do a drybrush over it but ran into some problems replicating my final gray paint blend, so I went with what is probably an excessively dirty look. (I'm really only a half-way decent painter.)

Some highlighting in addition to a wash may be the answer to getting a crisp look on your models. There are a ton of guides on youtube, etc. for creating that effect, mainly with other game systems like warhammer 40k, etc. Highlighting is a bit different than how ffg paints the models. Closely replicating FFG's factory look would probably be pretty tough I think.

Yeah, i recently tried to paint my squints and defenders and used this really cool dark green. it came out fine but you could hardly tell it was their because TIEs are so dark.
