Tarn Mison with R7

By Morgan Reid, in X-Wing

I may have missed an earlied thread on this but I was just checking out the new shiny things to be released soon and noticed Tarn with R7 will be a very good defensive ship.

Anyone who shoots at him will have to re-roll their attack dice if you want! Of course if they Target Lock him and shoot poorly it's no different.

Looking fwd to flying some new X-Wings.

It has been discussed, and he seems like a great closer ship. There ARE limitations, however. First of all it only works once per turn. Secondly, the only one reroll rule still applies, so you WANT the enemy ship to roll well initially. Then you can make them reroll hits hoping for misses and eyes, assuming he's not focused. However, if the attacker gets all or mostly blanks on his initial roll, then he will probably reroll his dice (if he has a target lock). Then, when he gets 4 range 1 hits against you, you can't reroll anything at that point.

First of all it only works once per turn

Yeah, this was a sad realization for me - I was stoked when this came out and someone had pointed out that it only works once a round. Still neat, but not nearly as awesome.

True.

so you WANT the enemy ship to roll well initially.

Why?

If both sides have a TL (and are willing to use it), all dice will get rerolled. Which side forces which reroll does not matter at all. You want at least one blank (1) on the initial roll so the attacker does use his TL.

(1) or eye without focus

Your point is fair, but it depends on if he has a focus or a target lock already. If he has a lock you want to reroll good things immediately. if he has a focus you want to wait for him to use it first.

As the defender, you modify the attackers dice first so if your opponent has rolled eyes and has a focus you will want to get them re rolled too and hope that a blank comes up as if you don't the will become a hit anyway

Can't wait for the attacker to modify attack dice first. Defender goes first.

So let me get this straight: if the attacker has a TL and Tarn uses his TL & R7 to force a reroll, does that deny the TL reroll to the attacker based on the 'one reroll' rule?

Yes. Yes it does.

Until they make a new rule, at any rate.

Only for the dice that were re-rolled by the R7's ability. For example, let's say you roll three dice and get a hit, an eye, and a blank. I use my R7 to force you to re-roll the eye and the hit, giving you two blanks instead. Now that I'm done modifying dice it's your turn, and you can spend your target lock to re-roll any number of dice. The only legal die to re-roll is the original blank, so you re-roll it and get a blank again. Guess you just suck at dice.

You've seen my dice rolling then?

I figured that was how it would work.

Cheers

Where is it written that the ability is limited to once per round? I read the errata and couldn't find Tarn in there.

Tarn can TL the ship that's shooting him each time he's shot. However, R7 astro can only spend that TL once per round; it's right on R7's card. After spending the TL, Tarn can still reaquire TLs.

Exactly this. One of my favorite combos in the game as it forces your opponent to make the decision to take him out early, or have him around in the late game.

Or...he conveniently dies to two 3 dice shots despite all odds. That's what happened to me both times I played him.

What's with all the necros recently?

Tarn R7 hull upgrade and 6 bandits is my list of choice. It's a tough choice to start with tarn or all the bandits. Tarns R7 only gets better with less and less shots coming in. I've had a super dash shoot hlc at tarn and roll a natural 4 hits, R7 all of them and he rolled 4 blanks. His focus and target lock meant nothing that round. the look of confusion of how well R7 worked was priceless.

Tarnation is amazing and fun. It won me a tournament.

It is random, and yes, sometimes you force them to reroll their hits and they get crits...but it still makes your opponent choose what to take out first. It is a mental thing in many cases. In my local regional, I ran with Tarn+R7 and Luke + R2-D2 + Predator with two Z-95s and a Proto A-Wing. Do you want to try and engage Luke for the early kill? Take out Tarn first and gamble against his ability? Tarn is great for forcing your opponent into tough decisions.
