Gunner

By ravenwolf64, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Dear Gurus,

We think we know the answer to this but want to make sure.

"GUNNER: After you perform an attack that does not hit. immediately perform a primary weapon attack. You cannot perform another attack this round."

We assume that means the player may not attack with any other ships this round, not just the ship that has gunner. Question arose that maybe it meant only the ship with the gunner that couldn't attack again, to keep "Gunner" from looping until you got a guaranteed hit. Hope question makes sense :)

Peace

The ship with the gunner, if it misses, may immediately perform a primary weapon attack. If that one misses as well, too bad.

It has then reached the limit for attacks, that round.

Other ships are other ships and have nothing to do with Gunner, unless of course, if they are also equipped with one.

"You cannot perform another attack this round." That phrase is to stop having gunner and Luke being overpowered on a YT. You get EITHER gunner or Luke but never both. That is what it is for.

It means only the ship with the gunner. Whenever a card says "you" it is specifically referring to that ship and no other. The rule book covers this on page 19, in the box named "card abilities" (which, admittedly, I had a harder time finding than I expected, what is that rule doing in the advanced rules section?).

Gunner only applies to the ship is on as Keffisch mentioned. I doesn't apply to any other ships. Now a few notes:

If using Gunner prevented any of your other ships from attacking do you really think ANYONE would recommend using it with Han Solo Shooting First? What point would there be to "shoot again" if it would PREVENT you from making attacks with the two fighters that usually accompany him. If gunner prevented any of your other ships from attacking after its use you would only see it on the lowest PS ships in the game.

It is possible to attempt three attacks because of Gunner. If a Cluster Missile is fired at a target it makes two separate attacks, either one of which could trigger the Gunner. If the first Cluster Missile attack misses it would allow Gunner to be used BUT if Gunner is used then the second Cluster Missile attack would not happen. If you make the second Cluster attack and it misses you get the chance to use Gunner here as well. It would be possible for a (normal) ship to hit with two attacks but I can't think of any way to hit with more attacks.

People in my LGS community had the same problem when the game first came out. All cards that refer to "you" refer to the individual flying the ship, not the player.

eg Turr Phenir - YOU may perform a free boost or barrell roll action

Dark Curse - When attacking YOU

In each case, You is referring to Turr Phenir and Dark Curse specifically, not the player.

Gunner is the same, so Gunner on Han Solo for example; YOU may not attack again this turn, means Han Solo may not attack again this turn in just the same way that TURR may perform a free boost or barrell roll and when attacking DARK CURSE.

Hope this helps.

The only other weird interaction that I can think of is Cluster Missiles. If your first Cluster Missile attack misses and you choose to activate gunner, you forfeit your second attack from the missile card.

Gunner says you cannot perform additional attacks this round.
This is to prevent folks from using two gunners on the same YT-1300 for guaranteed damage
This is to prevent folks from using Gunner with Cluster Missiles (potentially with that same YT-1300) for 4 attacks in a single round..

yada yada yada.

At present, there is NO upgrade that could be considered detrimental to your fellow ships (well, ever since Swarm Tactics got FAQ'd recently). There likely never will be one.

Ionization reactor can damage your fellow ships. All of them. Spoiled but not released.

So how they get confused. The player would get up from the game table and perform a barrel roll on front of his friends?

Don't forget Seismic Charges, Proton Bombs, Proximity Mines, and Assault Missiles, all of which can damage your friends. I'm sure Biggs would argue about no upgrade being detrimental either. ;)

Splash damage is not what I intended to talk about., as it's more of a one-time-use thing. Not sure where you're going with Biggs, as his own ability is the self-nerf.

What I intended to communicate was that there are no upgrades that are like "Action: Target friendly ship at range 1-3 cannot shoot this round. If they had an enemy in their firing arc from range 1-3, you may gain 3 attack dice".

Thank you all! Don't know how we missed the pullout box on page 19 after scouring rule book as many times as we did :(

Peace!
