Sorry but as bad as I feel for the OP, I am still a touch worried it's a scam. I've fallen for 1 too many in the past.
If it's legit, then that's awesome that the community helped out.
If it's a scam, and you all just sent someone a bunch of free stuff...well shame on you.
I'm trying to resist. Really, I am...
I find your lack of faith disturbing.
Seriously though, there will always be scams. I would at least hope that everyone donating is donating money that is surplus to their needs, so at least it's no great loss if there is any level of scam involved. Beyond that? If we focus too much on the possibility of everything being a scam, that in itself can make a person so sour that it stops them enjoying life.
I think the turning point for me was after giving a lady with a sign that said "2 kids and about to be homeless, please any money for food", $20 dollars. Then about 30 minutes later seeing her checking out of a liquor store, kinda hurt my blind trust abilities. I remember seeing that sign, feeling really bad for her kids and looping around to give that $$ to her. I stopped by a local grocer that wasn't far away and after getting my food, hit up their attached liquor store. She was the person ahead of me in line....I remember feeling like such an idiot when I saw her hand that checker (what appeared to be) the same 20 I gave her.
Again, if this was legit, then it's awesome that the community came together.
If it wasn't, then shame on him ![]()
Whenever you give charity to someone, it is for your benefit, not theirs. You always have two choices:
Either you give to someone to help them out and never worry about them taking advantage of you.
or
You never help another person so that you never get taken advantage of.
Life has risks, just learn to accept the risks that you are comfortable with.
In this case, the OP was lamenting about lost minis. It was the forum members that started the drive to replace them. In this case, I don't think $ sent to M.F. would go to anything other than x-wing minis.
Edited by SergovanWow sour grapes alert. If someone has disposable money it is theirs to do with as they please. There is exactly zero cause to come here and rage about how you weren't blessed with a functioning sense of empathy. Reported btw, there is no excuse for personal abuse of that kind.

How was my statement abuse?
Hunter,
It wasn't I reported the guy who opened page 9 with a personal attack. I liked the things you wrote so apologies for the confusion.

This is where forum credibility comes into play. There are some people here that I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire (hint hint), while other, more upstanding members I'm willing to risk losing $20 to if it turns out to be a scam. Seeing as how we volunteered money that wasn't being asked for in the first place, I'm not too worried about it.

I will always remember the "homeless" guy begging for money "for a bite to eat" I saw once after coming out from a supermarket. I gave him the second sandwich from the pack I'd just bought, and he looked at it for a moment as if to say "how the frack am I meant to get drunk on this?!" before throwing it to the ground.
Talk about going off the deep end.

I do sympathize with the with the plight of Millennium Falsehood (note that's not an entirely trustworthy sounding name) and where he someone I personally knew I may lend financial aid. This is not the case. I can however recognize that people are free to act as they wish although I believe MF should be overjoyed if people made contributions that would help build a "good" collection even if it doesn't fully replace the collection lost. Pricing them out at MM may have been wise but as I've already pointed out I don't see the point of adding a S&H suggestion as well considering how easily free shipping would kick in.
Losing an entire collection of minis is certainly a painful setback. Not knowing the reason for the loss does leave questions unanswered. It certainly is nice to see some member rally to provide financial support to rebuild but my take is that giving MF a good start on rebuilding should be more than enough and instead of taking him all the way back why don't you just try to support other new players who may be having a hard time even getting into the game the first time.
Edit: I know MF has been active on these boards for some time before this thread started. Just the oddity of choosing names I guess.
Edited by StevenOWhile I haven't donated, I can say that Millenium Falsehood, despite his sketchy sounding name, has been an active member of the community. If he wanted to scam people he'd have made a different acount, built up its credibility some, and then scammed people. Instead he's been an active and regular forumite. He's not behaving like a typical scammer would. That isn't everything, but in my experience scammers are less trusting and don't rely on others to start suggesting donations.
For the record, "Millenium Falsehood" may not sound like a trustworthy name, but its a refernce to a fake Millenium Falcon that Wraith Squadron put together for a mission, for those who haven't read it.
I do agree with other statements, that forum cred plays a part here. MF has been here longer than I have, I know, and has been an active member who has made definite contributions of substance to this forum. Not to mention that the whole drive wasn't even his idea. I wish I had the cash to spare, I would contribute.
I recall when a guy in the Star Wars Minis community had a house fire and lost a lot of stuff, not just minis, but that community rallied and I believe replaced his entire collection (or close to it). I know I sent him over 50 VRs/Rs that I had duplicates of, and I felt like it did my heart a lot of good. Guess what? I can't even recall his name, and it doesn't matter.
More importantly, I had my kids help bag things up - they loved that we were helping someone get a little slice of normalcy back.

Audio Weasel is right. Millennium Falsehood is reference to a ship in the X-wing series of books. Wraith Squadron was trying to get the real Millennium Falcon out of harms way, so they painted up a junked YT-1300 in order to fool Admiral Trigit into thinking they were heading off planet. It worked, too. It's also a reference to how picky I can be as a modeler, because Han Solo came by the shop while they were working on the ship and nit picked every little detail: the dish was too small, there was only one set of quad lasers, etc. They tried, but it didn't please him, and I tend to go overboard when criticizing my own work sometimes.
The name is one I've had in the online community since 2001 on the Starship Modeler forums, and I've used it every other place since (sometimes I had to abbreviate it to MillenniumF because of name length issues).
I've never scammed anyone out of money, and I don't appreciate being accused of it in what is normally a friendly forum. I wouldn't have even asked for it if someone hadn't suggested a donation page. Up till that point I had been content to simply spend whatever spare cash I got to replace them. As for the fact that MM ships free any order above $100, I never noticed that, but it was pointed out to me that they do so I've already decided to take down the page when it gets to $375.
As for getting a job, yeah, it's hard to find one in a town of less than 20,000 people, because we're also a college town and the kids get top priority over someone who's older. I had a good-paying job working at Calmar before I lost it due to being laid off indefinitely, and so I had to move back in with my parents and caught a lucky break with getting the (low-paying) job that I have, and most of the money goes to rent at my parent's house. Having been fed up with the job search, I've turned to selling art commissions at $30 apiece or more (here's my info page, if you're curious: http://fav.me/d53em5j), which has been a fairly decent source of income and netted me quite a bit of spare change, and I'm currently working to expand it into a full time gig, not only as a freelance artist but a freelance model maker. I've advertised a bit with my friends, and I already have an offer for a job which will pay about $500, and I'm enlisting my friends' help in creating a website, fliers (like this one, which is waiting on website info and a new email address before I print it: http://i.imgur.com/tmvG33w.png) and business cards to distribute, and after the website is done I'll probably create a FB page for it as well.
So please don't accuse me of being a) lazy/unwilling to work, b) a scammer, or c) living off my parent's money without knowing all the details.

Oh, I probably should tell you guys:
If you've donated $20 or more, please send me a note or something with your drawing request, and please be as specific as you can with details and such. It doesn't have to be X-wing or Star Wars-related, but I can't tell who most of you are from the page and I don't want anyone to be left out if they did donate.

HunterEste was missing the information that Millenium Falsehood never asked for money. It was both suggested and offered by other members.

As you quoted my post I'm sorry if you took it as me accusing you of any of those things. I'd like to think my comment was directed more at those posters who were going out of their way to accuse you of being any, or all, of those things. Perhaps my comments about S&H are a touch negative but see you may have missed before I posted it way back. I haven't said anything about the people willing to help your situation.
I meant no disrespect by saying "Millenium Falsehood" isn't the most trustworthy of name but in a way the story behind how you picked it actually supports that. While it has a Star Wars ring to it I am not familiar with the source but from the sound of things it was intended to be deceptive/tricky. I mean there are other places where less than honest people actually do go and they sometimes use pretty outlandish names.

I do criticizeHunter from time to time, but this was not one of those times. My post was directed at the abusive guy who opened page 9.

I apologize; I wasn't addressing you with anything other than the explanation for my screen name. The rest of it was directed at Old Adept and any lurkers who might agree with his (misguided) sentiments.
And yeah, it's not a very trustworthy name, to be sure. I mainly picked it because at the time I was on a Millennium Falcon kick and wanted to call myself that, but I decided that it was too obvious so I went with a more obscure starship with a similar name (hey, I was 12). Turns out, it had applications to modeling as well because of Han's behavior. No apologies are necessary. ![]()
Do you think it would help if I took a pic of the box and its contents when I buy the replacement miniatures?

For those who don't know, the Millenium Falsehood is actually in the game. Kind of.
It's the art on Decoy.
