Good introductory event for a large group.

By Coshuda, in X-Wing

Hello everyone,

I am throwing my birthday party tomorrow and wanted to play a large game of X-Wing so that many people could check it out and see what all the hubbub is about. What I am trying to discern is what is a good set up for 8-12 people to play at once. The obvious is each player with perhaps one to two named characters per side. I want to keep it simple, but am thinking of leaning towards some of the scenario plays, maybe the senator shuttle escort mission, or maybe the satellite/cargo tokens to retrieve/destroy.

What do you all think. Throw some ideas out there. Collection is no issue, having multiple copies of everything up to Imperial Aces. I have a nice 5x4 map that we can play on. I am curious to hear your thoughts.

If you have to tools my thought is to actually have a number of smaller games going at the same time. This way more people can be actively participating at the same time even if they aren't all acting on the same board.

Now if you want to make THAT interesting you set them up side by side and allow ships that "fly off the board" to actually go and land on the neighboring board and join that game. Ok, maybe it should be a little more complicated than that but the idea is that if one battle ends then the survivors can move over to the next battle to help out there. This assumes Rebels vs. Imperials but I think it is a way to get a limited free for all going.

PS. This isn't a surprise party for my birthday tomorrow that I'm not supposed to know about?

Another vote here for a Furball.

At a recent local game convention, I ran a Furball all day for both Saturday and Sunday and generally had 4-6 people around the game at any time, pretty much all new & curious players to the game. I had pre-generated and pre-printed a bunch of 35-point ships of both Rebel and Empire, so it was easy to just grab a sheet, the ship and get going in a few minutes. It was a great success for the day.

A scenario thread from a while ago. I added my custom "capture the cargo container" scenario. It works for 6 people.

The people with the least gaming/x-wing experience can fly the cargo ships and still have a good time.

It gives each team member a job to do. 1 attacks, 1 defends, 1 goes for the cargo. You can add in 50 point elements for each additional player.

Depending on who shows up and when later today, I'm planning on introducing a bunch of players like this.

  • Let each player pick Rebel/Empire, making sure teams are even.
  • Let each player pick their favorite ship.
  • Choose a minimum of upgrades for each ship to equal 25 or 33 points (same total for everyone; no YTs or Firesprays at 25, though).
  • Play X-Wing.

If I had some players who already had some experience, I'd let them fly multiple ships if they wanted. I chose 25 or 33 points because they're low numbers that also give players an idea of what full squads might look like (i.e. if we have 3 players on a team with 33 points each, they could all be combined into a normal 100-point squad).

If you're going for single ships I like the 33 and 25 point "limits" for the reason mentioned. You can take 3 or 4 of them and make a squadron.
