Awesome! Thanks, I will try this.
Any other thoughts?
Play something you have experience with. If you don't know how to fly it, the best list won't help you.
I like Falcon lists. Chewbacca + 2 escorts (Xs or Bs) is pretty easy to fly, and I find it fun.
Ask a question, and you'll get a different opinion from everybody who answers. Play to your comfort level, or use whatever is fun. Nobody here can decide what is right for you except you.
Edited by WonderWAAAGHIn my opinion, the game can be broken down to:
10% asteroid placement
10% starting ship placement
30% List balance
30% maneuvers and ability timing
20% luck
I have had a player declare that I was going to win the match 3 turns in. And I agreed. And I offered to help him with his list after our game. Well long story short, after making only 1 or two bone-head moves and not bieng able to land a single hit with 3 and 4 dice attacks, I lost the match. Both of us sat in silence for a second till I announced good game, but there was nothing either of us could take away from it simply due to the crazy amount of bad luck on my end and great luck on his.
So the best list you can take is one you know how to fly, and how to get around the board with and not something min/maxed by mathhammers.
Its your first fly what you like and what you are comfortable with. If you fly your favorite squad and get absolutely annihilated while having a great time you won. If someone hands you a list of ships and pilots you hardly ever play and you stress out trying to play them you are in for a long day.
Its your first list bring what you like best. See how a tournament runs and enjoy the day. Take a moment to walk around and watch other matches when you have a chance. Tf you have a chance to chat with other players while waiting on pairings do it you be surprised how much information you can pick up that way.

I'd go so far as to say it's 60% player skill, 30% luck, and the other 10% is everything else.

In all fairness you could easily lump asteroid and ship placement, your list, and the ability to use that list all under the category of "player skill" with a touch of "everything else" thrown in there.
Lost to a Han Solo Falcon w/ Luke and Chewie, and 2 rookie xwings.
Suggestions on beating that?
