The Abyss at Arkham Asylum

By MrsGamura, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Naacal Key allows a gate to be opened at your current Location... so you could open a Gate at Saint Mary's Hospital or the Arkham Asylum.

This seems like it would cause some complications... i.e. if an investigators goes insane they end up in the Abyss or knocked out find themselves in the Dreamlands.

So in my opinion I feel the Naacal Key should only work for Unstable Locations.

Also Gates only open in Unstable Locations.

Locations with green diamonds are stable. Monsters and gates
will never appear in these locations, although it is possible for
monsters to move to them in certain circumstances.

Locations with red diamonds are unstable. Monsters and gates
can appear in these locations, sometimes even as a result of
encounters. These locations should be approached with caution.

The Naacal card seems to override these rules.

I'm not going to argue in favor of the wording, because Black Goat items have generally bad wording. But I would suggest that the gate can be opened in a stable location, yes. Streets are another thing entirely, but probably can't (plus they're not the same shape as the gate token!)

A great strategy for getting a seal that can never be burst. Could give you an edge against Atlach-Nacha, eh?

Streets aren't locations - this came up in the Milk of Shub-Niggurath thread. The Naacal Key requires you to have a current location; if you don't have one, it's one of those 'indefinable values' that stops the ability resolving.

No reason you can't open a gate at a stable location, though - it's just hugely inconvenient. I opened a Dreamlands gate at Arkham Asylum in a recent game. It doesn't 'break the game', it's just hugely inconvenient. And it requires you to pay very close attention to the turn sequence, who's delayed and who isn't, who's skipping encounters and who isn't, and so on.

Careful, now...

AH FAQ, Page 5, Miscellaneous - Q: Exactly where...can investigators trade?

A: Investigators may trade any time they are in the same location except during combat...

Are you telling me we can't trade in the Streets?

Sometimes "location" just means "the boardspace you are in", and sometimes it doesn't.

Just making a point. I think that every strange situation we find has to be taken individually, and as much as we crave uniformity, we're just not going to get it. The Milk should be able to be used on any town boardspace where monsters can go. The Naacal Key should able to be used on any round boardspace where a Gate Token can fit. You should be able to trade anywhere Investigator Tokens can be on the same space.

"My" AH rulebook trumps your petty FAQ lengua.gif :

"An investigator in the same street area, Other World
area, or location as another investigator may trade
money, Common Items, Unique Items, and Spells. This
may be done before, during, or after movement, but not
during combat." (p. 24, under Trading Equipment)

Black Goat is draining my sanity. It could secretly be the most appropriate expansion to date.

Then how come it says the same thing in Dunwich and Kingsport? Where did you get your AH rulebook?

I used the Naacal Key in the Train Station in order to get a gate seal without dealing with the Skinless One, who was lurking in the Northside Streets. It worked well enough, but I really paid for the extra gate and doom token later on. As to having a gate in the Asylum, I guess you'd get a madness card then go through the gate.

I once used a Mi-Go Brain Case to move a ghost to the Asylum. Not my brightest move.

Revised printing (copy-pasting from the downloadable one).

Funny thing is I've never even gotten the Key but if I did. I'm only opening Gates in Unstable Locations... seems like it will make things easier on my poor Sanity of 3!

I get a feeling it's about time we get the new FAQ, they're working on...

Well, now that Kevin is done with any known Arkham products, he could actually write up the definitive Rules Document for the game (and expansions) so that we know when location means either Location or location.
