Big Bang Theories "Star Wars Day" Episode

By Serif Marak, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The only thing I really shake my head over in BBT is that these guys get a lot more action than 90% of the geeks I've ever known :) I just chalk that up to Chuck Lorre being the producer. Nobody on "Two and a Half Men" seem to be able to keep it in their pants :)

Howard would hit on anything that moved, and then some and rarely succeeded. Raj doesn't get much action at all, even when he does manage to find someone. Sheldon wouldn't know what to do if he did get something, mostly due to a lack of interest (he's nearly asexual in his lack of a sex drive). Howard gets more action now that he's been with Bernadette. Leonard gets some action, but you can count on one hand the number of girls he's been with (counting girls he's mentioned or have been on the show).

A lot of the backlash, to me, sounds more like the latest trendy illness going around: Pompousia Nerdicosis.

Nerds these days benefit from being so mainstream, and have become so comfortable in their skin (which is funny, considering the origins of nerdom), they have begun to feel entitled and turn their noses down on anything beneath them (or perceived to be).

Nerd elitism is strikingly ironic to me (considering I grew up a nerd before nerds were cool - which sounds kinda hipster actually, now that I think about it... ;)).

I will watch BBT and it is somewhat entertaining but the characters are very hollow. The jokes and plot lines are just the same predictable recycled things. There is nothing really special about it. The BBT writers don't really write with heart.

When they do play an RPG or something else geeky you don't come away from the episode thinking you would want to do it. After the Community DnD episode, I know non-geeks who expressed an interest in the game. The old Freaks and Geeks with Carlos the Dwarf was another example of a show with real characters and a valid representation of RPGs.

Of course, this excludes the episode with James Earl Jones and Carrie Fisher. That episode is just funny.

Ah the nerdrage. Hilarious. Sitcoms are always made up with stereotypes and caricatures. I've yet to see one that doesn't have them as they get the point across to the broadest group of people.

Who would want to date Penny? Just about any guy I know, including me.

And if you were dating penny the rest of us would love to know, does she have a sister?

Sure, Kaley Cuoco (Penny) is pretty and all. But am I weird for thinking Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) is the hottest one on the show?

If different people didn't find different things attractive, then we'd all look alike. There is nothing wrong with liking something (whether others like it or not). In the case of Melissa, she's cute, very short (like 4'11") and doesn't actually speak with a high, nasally voice that she affects for the show. So, enjoy your tastes. Don't be ashamed of them.

Um, I knew all that? I was really just being a bit whimsical. Sorry if that did not translate.

Are you sure? Since you asked "I knew all that?" instead of stated it. And whimsy doesn't really translate via text on a page.

Um, are you being intentionally daft?... Am I on hidden camera or something? What's really going on here?

How does one qualify to be a nerd?

From a post elsewhere, I feel I do indeed qualify: not a fan of sport. Enjoy science and science fiction. Enjoy tabletop board games and rpg's. These seem to qualify me as a nerd.

But that really is it. I've no sci-fi themed posters, t-shirts, action figures or toys. No chemistry set, no latest technology computer or fancy phone. I don't go to any conventions or other such events; and if I did I'd not get dressed up as a Stormtrooper or a Wookie, I'd just be in my usual clothes...

...though I am tempted to buy a "Wolverine" leather jacket...http://www.amazon.co.uk/DashX-Wolverine-Lambskin-Leather-Distressed/dp/B00IW5E7JA/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&qid=1399452968&sr=8-32&keywords=Wolverine+jacket...so my path to the nerd-side might be starting.

What do you think? Am I a nerd, semi-nerd or not nerd material?

I considered buying Snapes Coat from the opening of Half Blood Prince. It looks awesome as hell....

I dunno if I am qualified to diagnose you as a nerd, but I think being on this forum pretty much does it for you.

Welcome to the Dork Side.

I always suspected.

Just in my entire 31 years, 3 months and a day of life nobody has ever called me a nerd :( Not fair. But I was picked on for being different :D yey!

Desslok - The IT Crowd does nerd humor right. So much more relatable than BBT.

IT Crowd Season 4 episode 1: "Jen the Fredo"

A must see for anybody who enjoys RPGs.

Well I was a jock and a nerd in high school. I don't think the two are as mutually exclusive as people think. I took Latin, was in the robotics program and played hockey, ran cross country and rowed crew. I had more friends in the computer lab than I did on the hockey team I played on. I think we do children a disfavor when we try to force them into a one size fits all label. Yes it is fun to wear our nerd badges proudly, but in all honest we are all more complex than a single stereotype.

I know. Was just curious as to whether there was, in fact, a way to measure nerdism. I'm always referring to myself as a hobbyist or gamer, because I see myself as an ordinary everyday bloke who likes games in his spare time.

I know someone who likes to label people, but doesn't realize that no two people are alike. It can be frustrating when she labels someone and then gets upset with them for not acting the way she thinks they should.

Some people are funny.

Obviously I tend to be against the measuring stick approach. It's the same thing that get used to ostracize women who show some interest in "nerdom" by telling them they are not nerdy enough. But regardless, that is how some people are, so I guess we can't change things.
