DIY starfield mat?

By Eyeless1, in X-Wing

So Im trying to make my own starfeild mat. I just went to wal mart and bought some sort of black linen sheet thing, 4'x6' (for those big games) and now I am trying to figure out how to make it into a starfield. Yesterday I stuck tin foil over the top of my sheet and poked holes in it with tooth picks, then spray painted it white. It didnt really turn out that well....It was windy, so cause the tin foil to not be to close to the fabric, but Im wondering if there is any other way I could do this. I have plenty of paint, I used to play 40k, But I dont want to dot every single star with a brush.

"Any help here would be hot"

:P .

A friend of mine had good results by spray painting his fingers heavily and then flicking paint onto the board.

It does take a bit of practice though, my own attempts didn't come as good as his.

Get a old toothbrush and just flick the paint from the brush with your thumb.. It will look natural and will get the desired effect. Normally I use just plain tempura paint but other paint would probably work just fine.

If you're looking for DIY stuff, Fat Dragon Games sells tiles you can print and mount on foam core. It isn't a starfield, but it is the surface of a large ship or space station. I've used FDG's scenery for some of my RPG minis to great effect. I'm in the process of getting my board assembled (once I'm done with finals, I'll wrap it up), and can post pics when it's done, if you'd like. To give props to another thread, it's one way to do a scenario over a...wait for it...Star Destroyer! :D

Rubber.

I recommend just buying a strip of thinish rubber from a hardware type store and ask them to cut it to size for you.

36" x 36" of cheap awesome. No more ships sliding around, dice bounce nicely and are quiet and it comes black so you can add dots of white for stars. Very light and rolls away easily into a cupboard. Problem solved!

I took a white paint marker and shook it all over the felt I used for my mat. Here's the result:
