Rebel Aces is being printed

By Danthrax, in X-Wing

Five releases in five months is however potentially a bit much.

Well, to be fair, how many of the recent releases are actually late releases? It seems to me (and by all means, let me know if I'm wrong) that Imp Aces, the transport, and the corvette were to be released last year. It's not that everything's being released at once, but that new things are starting to be on time.

Imperial Aces was supposed to be released December 2013, yeah.

The Transport was supposed to be February, though, and the Tantive IV probably was supposed to be March.

In any event, they're all late, and it does feel like FFG is squishing the releases together in an effort to get them out the door as fast as possible.

They may also be trying to get as much as they can out the door before the new canon management gets to them.

I don't think that's it. I heard FFG had to renegotiate with Disney once Disney took over the license last fall. Even if that didn't happen, I'm sure Disney's been in continual contact with FFG since last fall. If FFG were about to release something that the canon management team wasn't OK with, I imagine it would have been canned already.

Which makes me wonder ... since that press release said everything released going forward would be canon unless it has the Legends banner, does that make the Wave 4 ships and pilots canon?

Yeah, there were no contract renegotiations after the Disney purchase. Such purchases tend not to affect current contracts. Just look at how Disney had to buy the distribution rights to a few of the Marvel movies from Paramount after the purchase.

And I don't think this game falls under what is canon.

I've heard a couple people here say that, but that doesn't really make any sense. When Disney bought the company they would have been required to honor any existing contracts. I'm certain that once the license is up, it will require renegotiation, but I don't see why the change in ownership would have caused it to happen immediately.

aaaaand, ninja'd

Regardless, they're making enough off of this game, I'm hoping they don't lose the license. There are certain things I would love to see happen that are not canon now. Prime example: Rogue Squadron TV show based on the novels, and yes, including Wraith Squadron. I still vote that Lt. Kettch should be the first PS 10 pilot.

Considering they are already testing canonicity of pilots (see Corran in an E-wing or the Unique Phantom pilots), I don't think the new canon policy will affect the game too much.

God, I hope so. Corran Horn is a prime example. I'm a HUGE fane of the X-Wing novels and I, Jedi, which featured him.

I, Jedi is one of my favorite books, and I'm incredibly glad we get him as a pilot. I do wish he was an X-Wing pilot, but he'll be fun to fly either way.

I think they were hurting on big named guys that flew the E Wing, so I understand why they went with Corran as their vanguard. I, Jedi was my fav EU book.

Well I totally get budget setting when you need to. I just hate the stereotypical 'women run the household' song and dance sometimes. Commercials especially big me. The husband is always this simpering dumb oaf that the wife thinks circles around. Notice in commercials. Men are never doing dishes, folding laundry, in front if a stove either...

But - this forum is about X Wing and not gender equality. How 'bout that Porkins? Any crazy stories flying that beautiful man around yet in games?

1- I love my wife

2- in marriage it's more about talking through things and making decisions that we are both in agreement (which I did not and she felt more hurt by being left out of the decision making process)

3- I have a budget for x-wing each month and I over spent on a 2nd transport

4- my wife has less shoes then I do

5- we have our first peanut on the way so an overspending is an issue right now

6- If I make marriage just about me and forget her I missing the point

7- have you seen the list of ships in my auto sign on each post (I have close to 600 retail of Star Wars stuff I am not by any means feeling short)

8- she is more excited to see me win a Tourny then I am

9- she plays Star Wars (not video game or Warhammer)

Last - I plan on crashing Porkins into another Porkins into the side of a transport tomorrow in a recreation of ep4 in stereo . :-p

And bonus she gets up after me most days but this morning she was up first and made me breakfast which normally does not happen so I am super blessed today.

I hope that's not a euphemism?

It's probably not that the contract changed immediately or could be changed... but if your most successful game line is dependent on licensing approval..

You will open your doors and roll out the red carpet to ensure the licensee's are more then happy to extend the license when the time comes.

If that means changing a pilot here and there... who really cares.. as long as the mechanics and balance stay sound I would guess they have a bit of wiggle room with the fans. Well unless Vader is flying an x-wing.

I thought about this also but we can't worry about it because it's not in our control. Let's hope for the best.

Except I don't think who they deal with has changed. Now, their liaison may now say different things than before, but the relationship is essentially the same. I would only be worried if Disney purchased their own collectible gaming/rpg company.

Or of they bought FFG... Yikes. Way to give me nightmares.

Or of they bought FFG...

Disney doesn't mess with companies that work. So even if they bought FFG, the quality of the product wouldn't likely change much. Because they wouldn't fire everyone and replace them with new people.

What would scare me is if Disney bought WotC or WizKids...

As an X-wing player, Disney acquiring either of those companies would be a bit scary. As a former D&D player, I'd support awarding a Presidential Medal of Freedom to anyone who's willing and able to pull WotC out of its current nosedive.

I dunno. They might not mess with X-wing. But a lot of other FFG product is not very Disney. GoT, Cosmic Encounter, Elder Sign, etc... I'd hate to see FFG forced to work with content restrictions...

Disney would be unlikely to tell FFG what they can and can't produce, as long as it's profitable. Just because Disney is seen as a family friendly type company doesn't mean they don't allow companies that they own to make stuff that isn't.

Yeah, Marvel hasn't exactly become a pure Disney content factory. I know they still release the occasional Max title. And haven't toned down the content noticeably.

That said, you are fooling yourself is you don't think LFL is going to pull FFG into it's Rebels and Episode VII marketing plans. I'm sure FFG would love to do it, since the merchandising synergy is just a good business sense.

I full expect that to happen. From the sounds of things there is at least some oversight by LFL about what models FFG can use. That means when Rebels and Eps VII comes out that FFG will be making things that tie into those.

It's just good business to do so. Everyone knows how well SW stuff sells, so naturally they'll want to get in on the new shiny stuff. In fact the closer we get to Rebels going on air, the more likely we'll see the next wave being Rebels stuff.

IMO here's what we'll see.

Wave 5 will be EU ships.

Wave 6 will be Rebels stuff.

Wave 7 will be Eps VII stuff.

We have wave 4 coming out this year. (Wave 5 in the works)

I'm going to call a spoiling of the Empire huge ships either this weekend for a May the 4th event or at Gencon.

Movie will be out in Dec, 2015. That's in theaters. Months before that date the models have been shot on film and weeks before that the drawings and rough model design are in. So the models can be done in mock-up before the summer as it takes all the time post production to put in all the special effects.

I can see FFG getting some agreement in the works to work with the model design team to find out what they will look like, and posting a Wave 6 with the movie ships in it.
