Some great asteroids on KS at the moment, seem a good price too: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1419757724/asteroids
ASTEROIDS
Well if I can save up, I might consider some Mk II in lava red.
Ooh - I like the look of these but want to ask, how do people deal with these if a ship overlaps them? If you're using a 2D card asteroid the ship can sit on it but you can't do that if it's an actual asteroid.
Also, when you're lining up a shot, surely a 2D asteroid makes it easier as you can lie your range ruler over it, but you can't do that with a 3D one?
Are these real issues or am I just overthinking it and should shut the frack up and buy them, already?
Ta.
Those are actual stones, aren't they?

I use model asteroids but I put them on top of the card ones - for measureing and overlapping you remove the model.
I made these for 3 dollars.
Step 1: Go to Walmart
Step 2: buy a 2 kg (about 5 pounds) bag of lava BBQ rocks
Step 3: drive home
Step 4: take cordless drill, add 3mm bit (about 1/8inch) bit
Step 5: drill hole into lava rock
Step 6. insert base into lava rock. I used old Firestorm Armada bases I had lying around.
Done in 15 minutes, including the drive to and from Walmart.

Step 6: order these from Corsec or add the stand to your cardboard asteroids. http://corseceng.com/omni-stand/omni-stand-asteroid-bases/

You can simply glue the base to the cardboard asteroid token, or even just put it on top of there. Then you have the 3d model above the 2d token.
I hate to speak poorly of a kick starter. But I did basically the same thing they did and all it really cost me was the time to collect some lava rocks, paint them and mount them on a peg/base.

Make "bases" in the shape of the tokens, or actually use the tokens, and out a magnet on or under them. Attach a magnet with the same charge under the asteroid and watch them float, thus not getting in the way.
One problem, one bump and things might get a little messy as asteroids roll around the table scattering ships and tokens.
Thanks for the replies, y'all. I particularly like the floating-asteroid-magnet idea
Apologies if I was derailing the thread.
Instead of rocks I used pieces of glass and rusted metal. It makes for a great 'flying through space debris' scene and if your opponent overlaps one, they have to roll red dice to see how many times you get to stab them.

Can't fault the business model, really...

Just add a small layer of super-conducting material under the asteroid, empty them out and fill them with liquid helium to cool the super-conductor into a super-conducting state.
Engage quantum locking! Now the 'roids won't move!
Then do the same with all the ships. Also, this will give you awesome space-fog all over the table!
Edited by KlutzAm I the only one who consider 3D asteroids beautiful but useless ??
Unless the asteroids are not created with bases that have the same dimension/form of the asteroid itself... it is not so difficult...
That's WAY too much money for such a simple item.
Mine are lava rocks, sprayed black, and dry brushed in various colors. Dremel with a small bites cuts through lava rock like a hot knife through butter. Then just throw on a cheap flight stand. You can even get teh rocks from free, just a pick a few up outside.
I love that they are selling actual rocks! Those are definitely real rocks. I would be afraid that I might break something if I knocked them over or during transport.
