Transport Blues

By TheWanderingMiller, in X-Wing

if they made it to the same scale it would not fit on the board. plain and simple. Everyone seems to want it to be same scale, but then get mad that they ship they want is not out due to scale issues.

Who appointed you the Grand Moff of the forum? The OP raises an interesting topic, it's only fair we discuss what the consequences may be of applying a similar line of thought to other potential releases further down the line.

Actually, that is exactly what this topic points out.

All the excitement over the transport release. People racing to place their orders. Box arrives and are savaged as people seek the goodies inside. Even if initially impressed, their heart sinks when they see it compared to other ships and suddenly the excitement gives way to bitter disappointment. Imagine having to pay more, a lot more, for a certain something and then, when it arrives, feeling the bitter ache of disappointment as it is almost dwarfed by a Millennium Falcon.

Boy do I feel like an idiot right now

It was a joke. I didn't say to end the discussion. I said Good Day. As in Good Bye. As in I'll be other places.

Then he pulled down his favorite ship...the dreaded PTL falcon that I have lost too many ties to because of that **** gunner. p.s., to be fair and make it fun for him, I never block him to deny actions. As soon as he placed it on the table next to the transport...he looked at the command pod in confusion...

then looked up at me and said,

"Dad, why is the cockpit for the falcon so much bigger. Is there only one guy flying the transport like an X-Wing? Shouldn't the command pod be as large or even bigger than the Falcon's cockpit? I mean think about it, where would the Captain sit? And why does the transport fly so much slower when it is really not that much bigger than the Falcon. Wouldn't it be better for the Rebels to just buy more falcons if they really needed to transport supplies and their army."

Left with no choice, I had to explain to him the scale difference and that FFG felt a 1/270 transport would be too large and hard to maneuver within the game. They scaled it down to a reasonable proportion in relation to the fighters while making it sit higher to give you a bit of illusion it is in scale, just a little farther away...

Nope, he wasn't buying it. He wanted me to show him with my hands how big it should have been if it was the same scale to the Falcon. So I gave him a rough double the size visualization with each of my cupped hands further in front and behind the transport. He felt they should have just made it that big because it would have been so much cooler.

I still managed to salvage his excitement when I then explained the rules of how he can overlap tie fighters when moving the transport and instantly destroy those pesky things. "You mean the ship can be flown like a battering ram?", he asked. "COOOOOOLLL!!!".

I can already see our next game this weekend. 3 transports running full speed ahead to ram every imperial ship on the table, with the falcon flanking out to "gunner" anything that runs from the transports. I think it is time to teach him what bombers with proton bombs can do.

Is the Command Pod the actual cockpit/bridge of the ship? Is it not the deflector shield generator/communications array?

Yeah, I never thought that thing sticking up was the cockpit, I always though it was the antenna array. Fwiw, I love the models, that is what got me into the game. I'd rather have it at a playable size than be absent from the game, that is my 2 cents. I agree it looks a little small beside the falcon, looks pretty good beside the xwings. It has been discussed before that the reference models were not really in scale with one another. The awing is way too big compared to an xwing or ywing. I think the the cockpit on the slave one looks huge compared to the falcon, I realize it is a big cockpit compared the size of the ship. Even comparing the cockpit of the falcon to an xwing cockpit makes the falcon cockpit seem small, considering it comfortably held 4 people. So there are already some scale issues. I'd rather have these ships as options in the game at a reduced but playable scale than not have them at all. Nobody is forcing us to buy them. If you need the pilots and upgrades, buy it, take what you need and resell the rest. My .02. There is nothing to prevent a player for eschewing huge ships completely and sticking with the 100 point format, which I think will strill be the backbone of the competitive tourney scene. After all, how many 300 point battles can you run in a day?

Oh, and I recommend prox mines for your triple transport problem. Should be a good show watching him try to avoid them.

I have to say, I went the complete opposite way mentally.

I just opened the box this morning from USPS and I was stunned to see how big it actually is.

I'm very excited now to see the CR90.

The scale of the Transport for me is totally acceptable, I think if the huge ships get much bigger it will change the face of the game too significantly.

I'm with one of the guys above, I'd rather have it at a reduced scale than not at all. Just flying it around is very fun. I brought all my gear to work today because I knew it was coming.

Actually it is both the Command Pod and Shield Generator.

I love mine. I think it's perfect size really. Played two games already and had a good time in both.

I wouldn't won't the huge ships to be the same scale as the small fighters. They're already going to take up a lot of space as it is, and I have limited storage space. :-p

This is the other thing that really concerns me at the moment.

I already had to get a bigger "Big Ship" storage box to transport large and 1 huge ship. Another huge and 2 imperial huge and I am going to have X-Wing Miniatures luggage.

It's not the size that matters, but how you use it. Lol

Speaking of bombs, I had the same idea. But if a bomb is dropped within range one of both fore and aft of a huge ship, do both halves take damage? I'm assuming not, given that in the huge ship rules assault missiles do not effect the section not attacked.

From the New Huge Ship Rulebook:

If an effect would damage both sections of a huge ship, the
opposing player chooses one section, and the chosen section
suffers the damage.
If a huge ship suffers damage from a source that does not
explicitly affect a single section, the opposing player chooses
which section suffers the damage. Crippled sections cannot be
chosen.

I look at the GR-75's cockpit as it may only seat 1 or 2. The ship itself only has a crew of 6 and occasionally a gunner if fitted with a weapon system. So think of it as a space super tanker. The very ship that brought the shipment of GR-75s across the Pacific to you only had 2 at the helm most of it's trip. The other crew were below deck maintaining the ship.

it is a good scale for the game and I can't wait for my CR-90!

I admit the most daunting thing that sticks out for me is how small the command pod is, but I'm overall very impressed with it. It's such a beautiful model, and I can't wait to smash up Imperials with it... :3

Is the Command Pod the actual cockpit/bridge of the ship? Is it not the deflector shield generator/communications array?

No, it's called the Command Pod because it commands shield particles to form a sphere around the ship. Badump-tiss

:P

Seriously, it's the actual command area of the ship, where the captain and senior officers sit.

I haven't picked my Transport up yet so I can't speak from actual experience. However, I'm still confused about the size complaints. FFG was up front about the scale difference. The size difference was to be expected was it not?

If I'm going to drop that much money on these ships I want to use them not put them on a shelf and look at them. Without even seeing the size difference I know that what they released will enhance gameplay. I can't imagine being disappointed when I see it side by side with my other ships.

But that's the guy that writes the occasional Sci-Fi novel in me.
