Question on ion turrets

By Bulwyf, in X-Wing

Correct me if I'm wrong but as long as the attacking player with the turret can roll a hit does that mean the defending player has no chance to roll for defense? The text of the card reads that if you hit deal 1 damage, assign 1 ion token and then cancel all other dice results.

A hit is only scored against a ship after your opponent has rolled all defence dice and used any evade tokens that they have assigned to the ship. If, after all this has happened there is still at least one uncancelled hit/crit dice, then your opponent suffers a hit.

You are wrong. The hits are canceled by dice and evade tokens as normal. The damage is capped at 1 normal (non-crit) and 1 ion token.

I thought that was how it was played, thanks for the quick responses.

To explain why, calling the explosion symbols on the dice "hits" and "crits" is purely a fan convenience, they don't actually have those names. When a card refers to a hit, it means the specific thing defined in the rules that the guys above said.

As Forgottenlore mentions we commonly use "hit" and "crit" to describe what would more accurately be called "open explosion symbol" and "filled explosion symbol." It should be obvious just reading that why we use the terms "hit" and "crit" to describe die results. It would be much nicer if we just had those symbols to use her on the forum.

Hit = uncancelled explosion symbol remain after Evade results and Token have performed defense.

Miss = NO uncancelled explosion symbols remain.

If you could roll [crit] x4 against an Interceptor but the Interceptor rolls [evade]x3 and spends an Evade token your attack would still count as a miss.

Just to reinforce all the above replies, the rules for "If this attack hits" are fully covered on page 12 of the rulebook under step "6. Compare Results", complete with all the appropriate dice result symbols. Then the rest of the text of Ion Cannon Turret goes into effect and Damage & Ion token are assigned just like Hexis said.

Compare "Lieutenant Blount" - he's not out yet but is up on the z-95 preview.

He always counts his attacks as hitting. This doesn't mean they automatically do damage, but they always trigger "if the attack hits" mechanics on stuff like assault missiles (so I guess he does automatically do damage with Ion missiles), or "if you are hit by an attack" mechanics on the defender, such as being forced to discard stealth devices, even if they take no damage.

The problem was that I was playing with a guy who had never played before and he was insisting that the text on the ion turret meant that I could not roll for any defense and that as long as he rolled a hit on his attack dice it meant my ship took one damage and one ion token. The only way he would agree that his interpretation was not correct was if I asked here. He saw the resutls and thankfully admitted his mistake.

It happens, I got all screwed up about autoblaster, but these guys will help you out and set you straight. No one has said this, so I just want to finish the clarification. Suppose you roll 3 red dice and score 3 hits, and the defender rolls 3 green dice that come up blank. He still takes ONLY 1 point of damage and gets the ion token. The rest of the hits are basically wasted.

If all you had to do was roll a "hit" to score a hit, that would make the Stealth Device really really weak.

Against a B-Wing, 2 "hits" is pretty much an automatic Ion, just because it has 1 agility.
