Hi I'm a noob.
Have any of you ever used mats from this guy?

Also, if I were getting one of his mats, which grid would I use?
Thanks,
Wade

Never used them, but you wouldn't want grids or hexes. Mats with them make planning your moves a little cheaty.
Edited by MikeEMcGeeI've looked at them before, but I still don't own any mat. Great prices it seems if he's legit.
@Mike: He has 36x36 mats without grids/hexes.
Oh, I didn't realize it would be cheating.
That makes the decision easy!
Thanks,

I know people that have purchased from Hotzmats, they are good quality from what they say. Price is decent as well. And yes for X wing, no grids...
I have this same game mat, around 6'x4' and it is very good. It did take quite a while to arrive and do not expect a great deal of communication. Some others have had issues and have posted on this forum, so do a quick search to see for yourself. Some of the options you have is to get a double sided space mat, so you could have a grid or hexes on one side and no grid on the other. Some space combat games do use grids so it is nice to have the option. The felt is a good surface for non-slipping of bases and as long as you roll it up when not in use it will keep wrinkle free. It does collect pet hair and fluff however!
Hotzmats is one of those Caveat Emptor situations. Like has been said, there have been issues getting mats from them, so buy at your own risk.
Sad, they look good, but if they pick up fuzz, its a no go for me. My three kittehs love "helping" in games. They're pretty good about not actually touching the pieces when a games going on, but given a half second in between rounds, the space is theirs.
get one of the neoprene mouse pad mats.... they make ALL the other types obsolete...

Edited by Swedgei got one of the hotz mats. it looks great and is great to play on. No prob with shipping or anything like that.
But if I got a new mat right now, I would be tempted to get the mouse pad one.
Having looked at the available mats, I ended up buying some black vinyl leatherette. This works really well, gives an easy slide when moving (particularly useful for getting to overlap positions) and a very slight pressure gives an excellent grip for when you have to lock something in place (template or ship).
I quite like the look of the grip mats on kickstarter, but they look to be expensive, and I am not sure that the "always on" nature of the grip is such a good thing for x-wing.
Black vinyl is the future - just like it was in the 50s...
