Some customs and repaints

By steelhelix, in X-Wing

Been lurking here for awhile, figured I should get around to putting my stuff up...

Repainted HWK, because I never felt that a generic Rebel spy should be flying around the real Moldy Crow...

My winglet modded Royal Guard TIE Intercepter, just plasticard and paint...

My Baudo class star yacht... the version of the ship described in the X-Wing books, not the one seen in the comics. It's a Shapeways model that I painted. Currently never yet used in play.

I've got other stuff done, too... but these are the ones I'm happiest with. Most of my Rebel fleet has been repainted at this point.

That Baudo is beautiful. I have yacht envy!

Who did your pilot cards and base toppers?

I really like the look of the painted base on the HWK, but I've wondered if you need a special paint for that to keep the pegs from getting stuck? Or do you just use a black primer spray?

Nice!

I like the HWK repaint. Same color I wanted, though with red or blue stripes on the wings.

Baudo Class Yacht? Never heard of it but now I want one. Going to google it and learn more.

Good work!

How do you like the Shapeways stuff? does it look/fell nice? i cannot paint at all, does it look good wiout paint?

The HWK repaint is very beautiful. The TIEint.... not so much....

I've found that a heavy wash, similar to the one FFG does, really helps to mask all these painting mistakes and give it an amazing finish that looks very impressive. Try giving it a wash, it would really change the whole thing. Just like magic. Also, the white/off-white highlights does bring some life to the TIEint and gives it some character

The bases are just black primer (citidel chaos black) with testors dullkote to seel it all, nothing too special. I usually put the entire base together before primering, so there won't be issues taking it apart afterward, which leaves me with little unpainted bits when they're separated, but I don't see that as an issue.

The custom cards and bases are mine, made on cardstock with my color laser. Making them wasn't too hard, but my printer isn't photo quality so they're a bit blurry up close.

The TIE Int's wash didn't turn out as well as I had liked originally... I did it pretty much in the dark and the red paint was thicker than I wanted, covering up a lot of the details so that when I did wash it, the wash didn't do too much. Disappointing, I know.

As to Shapeways... their stuff is really hit or miss. Even the frosted detail and ultra detail make sort of rough surfaces, causing it to be a b***h to paint. My TIE/Ds and E-Wings are really rough and it's noticable. The Baudo is actually White-Strong-Flexible-Polished, I found the polished version actually made it smooth enough to paint much easier, after I did all the pre-treatments that some other artists here recommended awhile back. Without paint... I don't personally feel they'd be worth playing... it just lacks something, in my opinion.
