Anyone modding their GR75s?

By Norsehound, in X-Wing

I'm looking at my model and wondering what kind of custom painting I can do to it, like all my other Rebel craft, and wondered if anyone else was thinking the same for their transports? We have a bunch of YT variants out there. Granted, Falcons are cheaper, but the GR-75 can also sit as a terrain piece in addition to being dropped into epic play.

Personally I'd love to see someone mod their transport to stick an Ion turret to it:

Not sure if I'd want to do that with mine, but it seemed like a cool modification.

Also... does anyone have any interesting custom GR-75s to drum up ideas? There's almost no alternate schemes out there that Google can find.

I'll paint mine, but I doubt I'll mod it. Khyros was thinking of lighting his, which I could be tempted to do!

I'm thinking about lighting mine, if I can crack it open without damaging it too severely.

Yup. I'm going to attempt to separate the top from the bottom, you can see the parting line the entire way around, so it shouldn't be too difficult to do that. From there, the lights on the top half will be easy... A little bit of dremel work, and some fiber optics should light up the 4 engine areas on the top of the ship. The three engine pods on the bottom are going to be a bit more tricky since there's not that much room to make that 90 degree bend.

If I can't get the optics to make the 90 degree bend (or there isn't enough material to support drilling vertically down) I might just run the cable straight through and paint it black so it looks like it's apart of the ship. While at first I wasn't too pleased with having to use optics on something like this, the positive side is that I can mix both white and blue LED light sources to give it more of the traditional glow we're used to seeing instead of just lighting it up blue.

I was also thinking of removing the hull plating on the underside and magnetizing it for easy on/off status. I figure that there's got to be a similar mechanism to load/unload the transport, where the hull can rotate out or something.

I am likely to add my "yellow" paint scheme for my smuggler set up to one of mine.

I have talked of adding an Antenna to the front and calling the ship the Narwhal.

and after running over some rocks with this thing, I might add a logo lke the old video game Asteroids on it.

I feel a repaint, or at least added paint would be nice to spice it up.

If I get a second one, I may put the Octan logo on the side...

I'm thinking to paint "Colonial Movers" on the side of mine in Aurabesh.

"Rent a Ship"

You know, there is really thin wire called magnet wire that is ideal for this. Solder some to 1.8mm LEDs, then carve a channel in the 90* rods that hold the engines, insert the wire, putty, sand, paint, and you're good to go.

Probably going to be painting one. At least doing the cargo containers, but likely to at least paint the engine glow as well. Additionally thinking of doing some neat design things on my second (or first) one to make it stand out, but I haven't solidified the idea yet. Luckily, I'm getting mine today, so with the model in hand I'll probably get some more inspiration. :3

I was going to put 2 small searchlights on the front and complain how the "batteries aren't included" with this model.

It was the first thing that sprang to mind when I pulled the transport out and showed my wife.
