2014 Regionals results

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

Here are the compiled results for the Madrid Regional. There were lots of swarms, and we finally had a pure Bomber + Missiles build make it... if only to the #32 spot. There are still no TIE Advanced.

I only saw 1 Shuttle! How disheartening! That is quite a large event as well! Maybe underrepresented? Tough to say.

Lots of swarms made it to the top though! Quite a few of the 6 ship variety using Swarm Tactics and Alpha Interceptors. Looks like a squad to add to the "need to beat" section, based off of this Regional and a few others.

I wonder if the 75 minute match times are playing a part in this, as well as the 12 pt for a full win rule.

I'm sure the 12 point rule is having a huge effect. It should significantly help swarms avoid getting stuck with partial wins. I'm halfway through adding up the week 1 stats, which is a small sample size, but TIE Fighters are about 30% of points using weighted average.

It's also interesting to see that Alphas are being used pretty frequently even though popular belief argued that 3 ties would be better than 2 Alphas. I'll be curious to see numbers on interceptors as a whole . Four ship interceptor squads (3 ints+TIE) and a couple three ship int squads are making regular appearances in the top cuts. Not dominating, but I think a lot more appearances than in Store Championships and certainly more than those that declared them "dead" expected.

Edited by AlexW

AlexW, yes, absolutely. Interceptors were around 4% in Store Championships. Halfway through week 1, its around 10%, but I intentionally cherry-picked the Regional that had 3 squints in the winning list first, so the real number could be much lower. Mixing in alphas probably has a higher skill cap because maneuvering and placement is extremely important, but if you were only going to run 6 TIEs anyway, then you're essentially trading away PS bid for raw firepower instead.

Almost forgot: at the Kublacon semifinals, this very close maneuver with Dark Curse happened: 14266591254_90ae6f034f_z_d.jpg

Ah yes... I knew the dark curse bait wouldn't work. Man I played that game so badly. I played to Dallas' strength of dice over my maneuvering and the dice didn't wanna swing my way. Oh well. Live and learn, still 28-4 with my regionals list so far.

Hi!

I finished second at the Good Games Canberra Regionals, I know the store manager will post the full results as soon as he can find a moment to do so.

In the meantime, I can provide the finalist lists:

Winner:

Chewbacca + Push the Limit + Millenium Falcon

2x Dagger Squadron + Advanced Sensors

2nd place:

Luke Skywalker + R2-F2

Tarn Mison

2x Gold Squadron + Ion Cannon Turret

Hi F,

I was waiting for him to send since he said he would. It was a fantastic final. Just a shame your video didn't work out.

The guy I beat in the semi to make the final was running 5x Gamma Squadrom w/ Seismic charges

I have some results from the Regional in Strasbourg, France!

First thing I can say ... 1st and 2nd and 6th place went to players from Germany!

In the final game ... 5 Firesprays on the board!!! This game was filmed, maybe it will be shown elsewhere.

Here are some lists from the Top 8:

1st: Bounty Hunter + Recon Specialist + Seismic Charges x2, OGP + Darth Vader

2nd: Bounty Hunter x3

3rd: Obsidian Squadron Pilot x4, Howlrunner +?, OGP + Darth Vader

4th: Blue Squadron Pilot + Advanced Sensors x2, Chewbacca + MF + Expert Handling + Gunner

5th: Blue Squadron Pilot + Advanced Sensors x3, Biggs Darklighter

6th: Royal Guard Pilot + Push The Limit x4

7th: ?

8th: ?

Slave 1 0.00%

Makes me a sad pandaaaaaaaa.

Well, the problem with counting the Slave-I title is that it costs 0 points, so since I am counting by points it doesn't show up anyway! Will have to think about that one.

It's just Germany and Chile this weekend! This will be a light weekend for Regionals because of the Imdaar event, but I just emailed the two stores that will be having Regionals.

Week 5 (2)
May 31: Hamburg, Germany. Dragonworld / Magierspiele
May 31: Santiago, Chile. Warpig Games
If you are going then spread the word. :)

Just think about how you'll handle Chardaan Refit. =P

That one's pretty easy, the A-wings all get cheaper. Hopefully they actually start getting used so I have something to report!

Thanks for the updates all. I pulled in what we have here so far. Does anyone know what the attendance was for these events?

I got all of the results so far into Excel, although I haven't uploaded the file yet for download. These are some very interesting results. Interceptors are boosting ahead in popularity, and Imperial TIE Fighters are swarming the final tables.

I am be tracking the data in an Excel spreadsheet and uploading it periodically so everybody can view it. You can download the latest version here:

For the statistics below, I am counting ALL of the squads that made the Final Cut, OR made it into the Top Third numerically. Everything is based on the number of points spent, and I use a weighted average of:

squad weighting = (event attendance) / (squad placement)

Commentary:

  • There are slightly more Imperials than Rebels in the Final cuts overall using a weighted average, but the Imperials are really dominating the top spots, especially at a few of the larger events.
  • TIE Fighters are being used twice as much as any other ship, using a weighted average. This is likely due to the full victory condition now only being 12 points.
  • TIE Interceptors are now getting used successfully quite a bit! I observe several reasons for this:
    1. A few very successful TIE Swarms are now mixing in Alpha Squadron Pilots, with a squad composition that mitigates their lack of durability.
    2. Better upgrades for the Elite Interceptors.
    3. Less overall turrets, due to less overall rebels.
  • With the abundance of TIE Swarms in the Final Cut and #1 spots, Howlrunner is now the most successfully used pilot. Chewbacca retains around the same percentage use as seen in the Store Championships, and is now #2.
  • The named X-wing abilities are so good that non-named X-wing usage has fallen to #5. Generic B-wings have picked up the slack instead.
  • Torpedoes and Missiles are virtually non-existent, except for the occasional Assault Missile.
  • There have been zero TIE Advanced reported in the Final Cuts.
