2014 Regionals results

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

The Boise, Idaho regionals only had 16 players (myself included). Top four were:

- #1 Richard (can't remember last name), flew Biggs + Luke (draw their fire and R2-D2) + 2x Rookie Pilots

- #2 David (can't remember last name), flew Howlrunner (hull upgrade and determination), 2x Black Squadron Pilots (draw their fire), 4x Acadamy Pilots

- #3 tie: Bryce Nielsen (me), flew "Scruffy Looking Nerfherders", Han (C3-PO, Millennium Falcon, Swarm Tactics), 2x Gold Squadron (ion turrets and R2 Astromechs)

- #3 tie: Daniel Taylor, flew "Smuggler's Defense", Lando (swarm tactics, nien nunb, han solo) and Chewbacca (draw their fire, C3-PO, R2-D2, Millennium Falcon)

I used the excellent data that you all have been gathering to write up an analysis of the Wave 3 meta and attempted to see what lessons we can learn for post-Wave 4. It's posted at A Few Manuevers.

http://www.afewmaneuvers.com/_/afm-articles/x-wing/meta-analysis-regionals-results-and-wave-4-r178

Let me know what you think. Thanks for taking the time to report and collect the data. It's a real boon to the community.

There are a few different ways that you can weight the data. For the summaries here (and in the linked Excel doc in the 3rd post) I use the weighted average below which I think is the "fairest" way to represent the data from the competitive meta. I'll eventually be adding in different weighting options into the Excel spreadsheet, so anyone can download it, change preferences, and see what it spits out.

Of course, the file is already around 35MB because of the raw number of cells and the way the data is tabulated, especially for computing squad archetypes. At some point it becomes easier to use a real database and write code to wrap around it.

Weighted Averaging

For the statistics below, I am counting ALL of the squads that made the Final Cut, OR made it into the Top Third numerically. Everything is based on the number of points spent, and I use a weighted average of: squad weighting = (event attendance) / (squad placement)

The Boise, Idaho regionals only had 16 players (myself included). Top four were:

- #1 Richard Hsu, flew Biggs + Luke (draw their fire and R2-D2) + 2x Rookie Pilots

- #2 David Coley, flew Howlrunner (hull upgrade and determination), 2x Black Squadron Pilots (draw their fire), 4x Acadamy Pilots

- #3 tie: Bryce Nielsen (me), flew "Scruffy Looking Nerfherders", Han (C3-PO, Millennium Falcon, Swarm Tactics), 2x Gold Squadron (ion turrets and R2 Astromechs)

- #3 tie: Daniel Taylor, flew "Smuggler's Defense", Lando (swarm tactics, nien nunb, han solo) and Chewbacca (draw their fire, C3-PO, R2-D2, Millennium Falcon)

Fixed last names for you. ;P

I found a minor bug in my Excel summation for week 7, I wasn't counting a few of the squads in the Franklin, WI Regional (bottom of the list, reference didn't extend far enough). Oops. The affect is minor, I'll roll the corrections into the week 8 updates when I post them. Including these fixes and the #5 - #7 results from the Austria Regional, the B-wing is back in 3rd place above the Interceptor.

Overall Ship Usage
TIE Fighter 32.32%
X-wing 15.70%
B-wing 12.94%

I'm assuming that this squad had Veteran Instincts on Wes:

Kissimmee, FL, United States
  • Top 8: Wes Janson (+ Veteran Instincts?) + R5-P9; Biggs; 2x Rookie Pilot

It would also be nice to get more of the #9 - #15 squad info since the Regional was so large. So if anyone has those exact squad details and their placement I'll add those as well.

The Wanted List

We still have 3 international Regionals with no report. If you can, please help!

Only 16 people for the Idaho Regional?!? I went to multiple store championships with larger turn outs. That's bad planning on FFG's part.

Oh, now it was all worth it!

Haven't had much time to work on my site in a while but thought I'd mention I've just finished updating it with the latest data.

Also about half way through adding the Store Championship data (worth noting that it's sorted by faction so the rankings are probably favoring imperials more than they should be at the moment). Initial plan is to have it only use the the latest 6 months of data with anything over 3 months old being weighted progressively less (75/50/25% for 4/5/6 months), but haven't added that yet.

As always, would love some feedback, still very much a work in progress. Could see having faction filters to only show one or the other faction and actually showing the "score" or percentage for each squad/pilot/ship/etc could be useful but probably will only add them if there's demand.

Cheers, and thanks to MJ for compiling all the data as usual.

Ps - Link is in the sig :)

With the amount of data that's in the spreadsheet, I would think that the best way to get all the data, would be to read the excel file directly and do some string parsing. This would also let you simply download the Excel file as it is updated, and automatically pull everything in.

It seemed that it was only 16 in Idaho, that everyone who participated got a set of evade tokens. IIRC, there were only 3 locals who showed up. Half were from the Seattle area, 3 from Utah, and one couple from Denver. Oh, and Jonathan Gomes came to that one as well and tied with 3rd and 4th in wins, but was placed 5th due to strength of schedule. I believe he's from Moscow, Idaho (4 hours or so north of Boise).

I was expecting a much better turn out. I know had it been held in Utah (Salt Lake or Provo), there would have been probably 30 players just from the local X-Wing scene, let alone any travelers from near by states. But I suppose I shouldn't complain, since it strengthened the odds of placing top 4 for me :)

Another thing that may discourage people, was it not $20 for registration? It seems a lot of the other ones I've looked at were $10-15.

Granted the $100 or so in gas is what deterred me.

Also I was told last yeah Utah had one of the regionals and only 8 people showed up.

The Regional in Burlingame was held at KublaCon, and you needed to buy a convention pass in order to participate in the X-Wing Regional. I paid $50 for the weekend pass (Day pass was $40). And the turnout was ~40 ppl.

A conventional is completely different. I would happily go to a convention and play in regionals.

Assuming Idaho is anything like Utah I find most people are a bit stingy and people were complaining about $10 to Alpha Imdaar when other stores were $5.

I talked the T.O. about this thread while I was still there, but he said something to the effect of not wanting to type up the data of all the lists or something. He doesn't have a presence on these boards either. And by that point, we were in the top 8 and I think he hadn't kept the lists from those that hadn't made the cut anyway. I did put many general lists/archetypes I saw there in a previous post. May not help much, but I would be fairly certain the 2x bounty hunter with prox mine (one also had flight instructor) and doom shuttle made top 16. In retrospect, he said he liked the recons/seismics better that my buddy flew to top 4. I'm also fairly certain there was a Biggs + 2 dagger w/ adv sensor + gold w/ ion and stress droid in top 16. After that im not sure what squads out of the pile I mentioned made it that far. I did play a 3x blue w/ sensor jammer and hlc in the final round of swiss, and I was top 8 so she might've been top 16 as well.

I am almost certain wes had VI. My other buddy that eventually won the even knocked him out in the top 8. The droid was on Biggs though, not Wes. I wish I had a chance to record the top 16, but the event was moving VERY quickly between rounds, even between the final swiss and the cut. They also did 60 min rounds, (the final match was untimed) so often you had even less time between games.

Heh, according to this post http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/82153-question-for-those-who-won-a-2013-regional-championship/page-3 there were only 4 people at last year's Utah regionals. I didn't start getting into the tournament scene until this year, so I don't know what last year's was like, but the Store Championships I went to this year were all more than 16 players each, with only a handful of cross-overs (i.e. same players going to different championships). I can only imagine had Regionals been here, it would have had at least as many as a store championship had, and probably more (since there'd only be one to go to instead of multiples).

The tournament scene has been picking up steam...

I played him in the top 8 and if I remember correctly he did not have VI, he was playing a point short for initiative and yes the droid was on biggs.

Berlin,Germany, there were only 15 player.

I won the event, with Howlrunner, 5 Academy Pilots and a Scimitar Bomber with an Assault Missile.

Second place, was Luke with DTF and R2-D2, Biggs and two Rookie Pilots.

Some other Lists I can remember:

3 Bounty Hunter

3 Omicron with APL

1 Omicron with Darth Vader, APL and Gunner.

Wedge

Biggs with R2-D2

2 Rookie Pilot

This was a big week for Rebels, especially for closing the gap on the Tournament Winners. Imperial tournament victories, weighted by attendance, peaked in week 7 at 73%, and are 64% through the week 8 reported results.

We still have no report for 3 international events week 8.

Congratulations on a 2nd Regionals victory! What was the final cut? 4?

If you can track down #3 - #5 it would be appreciated.

Thanks. :)

4th place:

Lando with Gunner and EH

3rd place:
