2014 Regionals results

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

The key to Falcon + 3z build is the Engine Upgrade. In two regionals, Grish, who was playing that build, never lost his falcon. I was 100% certain that Darktemplar would lose that semi finals. Turns out he's a smarter player than me :) I assume he just managed to stay away from the falcon and kill the Zs for the win, which should have been easy with Soontir and Whisper. it was 11PM when the semi started.

Rounding out the top 8:

Top 8: Blue x4, Bandit

Top 8: Howlrunner + ST, Mauler Mithel + ST, x2 alpha, x2 AP

Top 8: Whisper + IA+ACD+FCS+VI, Howlrunner, x3 AP

Top 8: Kath + Pred + Rebel Captive, Howl+ST, x3 AP

I just pulled the results into my spreadsheet. The one that's bolded only comes out to 94 points. Looks like we missed an upgrade / EPT on Howlrunner.

Seems that new falcon mini swarm build is a lot more powerful then people thought.

Who would run such a crack pot list :P

Is it true that the judge made one of the top 4 players change dice? What happened?

94 points - to beat all other initiative bids... Except for the 93 point squad... You should just make a 12 point squad to guarantee initiative!

Someone said there was a 3pt upgrade on howlrunner in that list. Likely the hull upgrade so that it's exactly the same as the list that one arizona.

I would guess PTL on Howlrunner for a 97 bid, or swarm tactics and 96 bid. 94 bid sounds just unlikely... i hope.

Who would run such a crack pot list :P

Here's what I recall:

Tons of armchair generals in here full of such wisdom and insight on how matches should play out in theory.

All rounds were 75 minutes, with the event completing around 1:30 am. 38 in attendance I believe. I watched the game between Han and Whisper - Both players were exceptional and complete gentlemen; was a treat to watch the game. FCS+Gunner on Whisper is potent, as well as 4k+stress eat from Yorr. Whisper and Han never fully met, with only a few exchanges only at the last 10 minutes. Soontir and Yorr chased Han away from Whisper until she dealt with the bandits. There was an exceptional boost from Han to get range 1 shot on Whisper without cloak, which might have decided the game if not for the evade token taken by Whisper.

The day was full of falcon lists killing B-wings, B-wings killing phantoms, and phantoms killing falcons. Get over yourselves, forum denizens.

....

In complete agreement with you on that on: Some people(s comments) come off sounding extremely rude; totally disregarding that they have very limited information on the situation, Initiative etc.

And no matter how good of a "Best Squad EVER" you are flying sometimes a player (even the most experienced) will make a single poor decision (or is forced into it) and/or is beaten by a couple of bad rolls. There are NO auto win lists, and any good list needs to be flown with attention on or insight in it's strengths in order to consistently succeeding in any tournament.

Lately I have seen some relatively new players totally fooling way more experienced player by a combination of unexpected tactical decisions and unorthodox squads rarely seen in out meta.

So yeah, anything can happen, and during any tournament it'll happen a couple of times. Granted, a good list/player will more often be able to bounce back.

Hey, no disagreement guys, but I do think forum "denizens" and questioning the reasons for choices on builds have a place that helps everyone learn a little and spawns some creative thinking (it also spawns parroting back "conventional wisdom, but take the good with the bad). Whether they know the exact details of the situation or not, it has often led to the progression of builds or the spawning of new list ideas. That is how it works, isn't it? While there is some rudeness, I think more often than not it is perceived due to the media it is presented upon rather than intended.

Just to clarify, were the elimination rounds in the Kingston Regionals played as 75 minute rounds and not to full squad elimination? I was under the impression that Regionals elimination rounds were not timed. Thanks!

Thanks. If you come across clarifications for the #6 and #7 list that would be helpful. For stats tracking I went ahead and entered my bolded assumptions, but I could be wrong.

I don't recall that happening in either semi match.

I recall we had a 75m match time limit. During my final match against Rick, once he swatted the six attacks away on Whisper ( one of which was a natural double crit ) I had a feeling that things were going to go badly for my Z's. Honestly I wasn't all that bothered and we had been at it for 16+ hrs. However you are correct our final match should have been to the last ship or to a concession.

I've read the posts from the past couple of days and will weigh in with the seven Z's were a ton of fun to run and are not to be underestimated even against the YT/Z builds. Needless to say this game still comes down to timely and consistent dice rolls; which were on my side up until the very end whereby I was bested by Rick's even hotter rolls. Couldn't have asked for a better final match experience (save for winning... ;) )!

Had a great time and met a ton of really fine players and people on Saturday. Kudos to the crew at Nexus, they did an outstanding job on keeping things running smoothly and big props for the additional door prizes to those who didn't make the either T16 or T8!

Minor update, I got an email from the TO running the Kingston match, and they confirmed that actual attendance was 32. 38 signed up, but 32 showed. They don't have the #9 and #10 results, since I failed to email them ahead of time to request the results.

(Fail me! I missed emailing them and the Nurnburg Regional this week... moving has been catching up to me)

Also FYI: The Nuernberg Regional had 45 players. No squad details yet. I'm not sure if there was a Final Cut or not. Apparently there were lots of Z-95s and Phantoms, no E-wings, and one TIE Advanced and TIE Defender.

wave 4 legal. Tantive IV (C3-P0) not legal.
Attendance: 45
Final Cut: 6 rounds of Swiss, Final Cut?

One last thought from the Kingston regional and the most important was my 14 year old son overcoming being a 14 year old and bad dice luck to finish 15th in his first regional.

Well done Ciaran! :D

I can't read German and I'm not keen on running everything through a translator... So why did Nurenburg not allow the Tantive card? Cards? Just C3P0? Doesn't that counter FFG policy that every card is legal upon general release?

Yes, from what I hear you had very consistent dice rolls right up till the last game. I wonder what the difference was.

I think it was mentioned that the Tantive was not yet available overseas(or at least in Germany)

Yup. I'll update the text on the description in the first page.

Thank you. I was just curious. :)

@Slugrage

The german tournaments follow the german tournament rules, which were made by FFGs local distrubotor the "Heidelberger-Spieleverlag".

Their term is really simple - every card must be in the shops for 14 days until it is legal for a tournament. So that every player gets a chance to buy & play this card.

That's the theory.

@MajorJuggler

An oldie just won the Nürnberg Regional!

Soontir Fel with PTL and Howlrunner with 4 Obsidians!

My attack dice were still very hot but my evade results went south at key moments.

For some reason the quote function doesn't seem to be working for me, any thoughts?
