2014 Regionals results

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

Best dice off I have ever had happened at the regional I attended. My blue with a TL against a tokened up Soontir at range 1. I rolled red, I got hit, crit, blank, eye. I use TL and rerolled the blank and eye and got a crit and a crit! My opponent rolled greens and this was the result:

Summary statistics for wave 4. Rebels and Imperials are exactly tied for overall winners, both representing 63 players each.

Wave 4 cliff notes:

  • Named YT-1300 continue to be out of control.
  • Advanced Cloaking Device Phantoms are spectacular, but are countered by YT-1300 with Gunner (see point #1).
  • Say goodbye to the X-wing, and say hello to the Z-95. The single most important use for the Z-95 so far has been as spectacular value filler for a single YT-1300 + support build (see point #1). Non-named Z-95 are being used with slightly more statistical success than non-named TIE Fighters at this point.
  • E-wings and TIE-Defenders continue to see barely any successful use.

Wave 4 tournament statistics (last updated July 9)

Only includes results for tournaments where wave 4 is legal.

Too early to tell the real impact of Wave 4. But as many predicted Phantoms and z95s are being used quite a bit.

Too early to tell the real impact of Wave 4. But as many predicted Phantoms and z95s are being used quite a bit.

I think that what we're seeing isn't the new meta, but is based on what people think the new meta will be. A couple of these tourneys are also smaller than store championships.

I have several miscellaneous updates. There is a lot of info here, so each set is enclosed in spoiler tags to keep this post readable by section heading. All of this info has been updated on the first page, but since it's updated I'm bringing attention to it here.

First, total attendance numbers:

For reference, here are the consolidated statistics for wave 4 again. Cliff notes:

  • ACD Phantoms are very powerful, until they run into higher PS or Gunner turrets.
  • E-wings and Defenders aren't really getting used.
  • Vanilla X-wings have largely been replaced by vanilla Z-95's.
  • Z-95 use has also eaten into B-wing use somewhat, but vanilla B-wings are still being used consistently.
  • So far all of my wave 4 MathWing predictions are coming true (primarily the above points)

I have some other things on my to-do list, like getting squad archetype breakdowns for wave 4. I also want to plot ship usage over time for the following data points, all using the same weighted averages:

  1. 2013 Worlds Top 16
  2. 2014 Store Championship
  3. 2014 wave 3 Regionals
  4. 2014 wave 4 Regionals

Stay tuned....

Edited by MajorJuggler

YT-1300 vs Phantom lists eh?

question is...

Is there are squad out there that beats both of these?

Edited by The_Brown_Bomber

Minor update, I got an email back from El Muro in Santiago Chile. Their Regional has been rescheduled to this weekend. I assume that wave 4 will be legal, since it has been available at the store since June 30, according to their facebook page.

So there will be 3 Regionals this weekend, hopefully all wave 4 legal.

So - we in Copenhagen just held the 2nd Danish regional (July 6) at the fantastic Faraos Cigarer.

Copenhagen, Denmark

July 6, 2014

Faraos Cigarer, Skindergade

Attendance: 22

Final Cut: 5 Round Swiss, Cut to Top 4

Wave 4 Not Allowed

And now for the Top 4 lists

Great, thanks. Looking forward to the full report. #5 -#7 would be good to get in particular, since I'm trying to get Top Third.

I can elaborate a bit:

#5: Swarm with

Howl Runner w/ stealth

Mauler Mithel

Dark Curse

Backstabber

2x Black sqd. w/Draw their fire

#6 (incomplete info):

Omicron w/HLC and Adv Sensors and Rebel Captive

Turr Phennir w/Vet. Inst and Stealth

Soontir Fel w/PtL and Stealth

#7 (a bit uncertain):

Jendon w/ ST-321 and Wepons Engineer

2 x Scimitars w/Assault Missiles

1 Royal TIE Guard

#8 (uncertain):

4 x Royal TIE Guard w/PtL

I/we can confirm that the 8th place DID fly 4 x Royal Guard TIE w/PtL

Thanks. If you come across clarifications for the #6 and #7 list that would be helpful. For stats tracking I went ahead and entered my bolded assumptions, but I could be wrong.

Rick (DarkTemplar) won with the Whisper list. It's on their site this morning. Looks like it was him against the z95 swarm in the final.

Who would run such a crack pot list :P

Here's what I recall:

6 rounds of Swiss with cut to top 8 in single elimination championship bracket

Winner: Whisper with Veteran Instincts + Advanced Cloaking Device + Gunner + Fire Control System, Soontir Fel / Push the Limit, Captain Yorr

Runner Up: Airen Cracken withSwarm Tactics + Shield Upgrade, 3 x Tala Squadron Pilot, 3 x Bandit Squadron Pilot

Top 4: Han Solo with Millenium Falcon + Luke Skywalker + C-3PO + Predator + Engine Upgrade, 3 x Bandit Squadron Pilot

Top 4: 4 x Blue Squadron Pilot, Bandit Squadron Pilot

Top 8: 4 x Blue Squadron Pilot, Bandit Squadron Pilot

Top 8: (need confirmation) Howlrunner with Swarm Tactics, Mauler with Swarm Tactics, 2 x Academy Pilot, 2 x Alpha Pilot

Top 8: (need confirmation) Whisper with Intelligence Agent + Fire Control System + Advanced Cloaking Device + Veteran Instincts, Howlrunner with <3 point upgrade>, 3 x Academy Pilot

Top 8: (need lots of help) <Firespray-31 with TIE Swarm Support>

Great event all the way around.

It's important to note that this event had the Whisper vs Han showdown. And whisper actually won. But if you look at it, the only ships that died were the headhunters. This makes me wonder how long these rounds were. Were the players taking a longer time to plan more carefully etc. There might've been a large disparity between the two players in experience. Han + gunner usually wins that.

Also do you really get your money's worth out of gunner on a phantom? Could've played the intelligence agent and given yorr an engine upgrade to turn around for the same pts (granted he may have been too stressed to boost alot). Recon spec is awesome too, even on whisper since you can have focus for attack and 2 for defense for gunner falcon shots. in my experience the phantom does not whiff it's attack very often. I can understand maybe it was an insurance policy to ensure whispers ability triggered.

Did you play the 97 pt whisper that had the agent in the top 8 round? That is the EXACT build that won arizona, wondering again if it was a veteran player, or someone that just netdecked it and may have made a crucial error in flying it or something.

Last thing, how many people were at the event total? I don't think that has been posted. 6 rounds sounds like it was pretty sizeable. So far the canada events have not been impressive on this front.

Not trying to take anything away from the winner here, in fact I suspect he was likely the most skilled/experienced player there. On paper I would be surprised to see the 2 above lists BOTH lose in back to back games to the list that won (though with the title and EU I would ptl instead of predator on han). Maybe shuttle tricks really threw them for a loop.

I played vs Darktemplar. That Whisper loadout is NUTS. Whisper, like Han, needs to hit, otherwise you are wasting a lot of points. Gunner and FCS lets you spend your action to Evade, as you are going to hit with 4/5 dice gunner and then a target locked attack. Then Whisper is camping an evade and a focus token all the while sitting on 4 defense dice before modification.

And the worst thing is, if he can keep Whisper near Yorr, that %$@&ing ship can K-turn, still evade, shoot, reshoot with FCS, hit and be camping focus and evade. Its bananas good.

Could've played the intelligence agent and given yorr an engine upgrade to turn around for the same pts (granted he may have been too stressed to boost alot).

This is why Engine on Yorr is a bad idea. If he's taking stress, he's losing his actions likely anyway due to collisions and extra stress tokens. You generally figure on one good pass out of him anyway, anything after that is just cake.

Tons of armchair generals in here full of such wisdom and insight on how matches should play out in theory.

All rounds were 75 minutes, with the event completing around 1:30 am. 38 in attendance I believe. I watched the game between Han and Whisper - Both players were exceptional and complete gentlemen; was a treat to watch the game. FCS+Gunner on Whisper is potent, as well as 4k+stress eat from Yorr. Whisper and Han never fully met, with only a few exchanges only at the last 10 minutes. Soontir and Yorr chased Han away from Whisper until she dealt with the bandits. There was an exceptional boost from Han to get range 1 shot on Whisper without cloak, which might have decided the game if not for the evade token taken by Whisper.

The day was full of falcon lists killing B-wings, B-wings killing phantoms, and phantoms killing falcons. Get over yourselves, forum denizens.

Rounding out the top 8:

Top 8: Blue x4, Bandit

Top 8: Howlrunner + ST, Mauler Mithel + ST, x2 alpha, x2 AP

Top 8: Whisper + IA+ACD+FCS+VI, Howlrunner, x3 AP

Top 8: Kath + Pred + Rebel Captive, Howl+ST, x3 AP

In complete agreement with you on that on: Some people(s comments) come off sounding extremely rude; totally disregarding that they have very limited information on the situation, Initiative etc.

And no matter how good of a "Best Squad EVER" you are flying sometimes a player (even the most experienced) will make a single poor decision (or is forced into it) and/or is beaten by a couple of bad rolls. There are NO auto win lists, and any good list needs to be flown with attention on or insight in it's strengths in order to consistently succeeding in any tournament.

Lately I have seen some relatively new players totally fooling way more experienced player by a combination of unexpected tactical decisions and unorthodox squads rarely seen in out meta.

So yeah, anything can happen, and during any tournament it'll happen a couple of times. Granted, a good list/player will more often be able to bounce back.

The Gunner + FCS combo makes sense. It is really, really, really important for Whisper to hit. Add in Soontir shenanigans, it looks like a really fun list to fly.

Nothing wrong with trying to piece together how the match played out or how you expect it would based on the squads. That's kind of an important part of trying to figure the meta out. And btw I placed top 8 in a 50 person regional for this game and won one (albeit smaller) for the swlcg, so I know very well that it can be grueling to play for so long and the mental drain.

Yes it is, and that's what I meant by insurance policy. I was curious how many times it ACTUALLY matter though. But if the plan is to always evade (or barrel roll) it does make a bit more sense.

Great updates everyone! If anyone has the attendance count for certain, and also the squads #9 - #12 then we could also get the Top Third.

I really need to do the squad archetype breakdown for wave 4. There were a lot if Z-95s in the final cut!

Z-95s are definetly here to stay as filler wingmen (not the literal card) and escorts. Still not sold on the all z-95 swarm though, but some people will try it. At least now it has made one showing. Now it needs to repeat a couple times. 4 bwing +1 z95 seems to be the new xxyyb/bbbaa list. I still think the best rebel swarm is etahn abaht + 5zs but time will tell.

Honestly, it really does make sense the more I think about it. It does hurt the Threepio & Falcon combo (also the Lando crew when it comes out). Good way to strip those evade results.

This is why the falcon + 3-4 z builds are starting to rise above the double falcon builds. If both players have a title + 3p0, but one guy has just one other attack compared to 3-4, that's huge. Both archetypes can do well against phantoms (assuming they have gunners), but since it seems there are far more people "playing it safe" with falcon builds than the crowd using the phantom, the ones that do best against each other are getting the honor of facing the phantoms. It also might fair better against random b-wing builds than double falcon does.
