2014 Regionals results

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

I got lucky in my first Han encounter and my opponent forgot to set Han's dial. The next time I had to face Han it was in round 5, and I just threw 6 ships at him. I got shields off in one round and almost dead in the next. I lost out on shots from blocking as I was bumping into Han and he could not get away.

I learned before the tournament that I had to block and trap a YT or it was going to cause me problems.

I've found that blocking a marksmaner Han/gunner build to be highly effective. Then focus fire on the falcon till he's dead. But it takes a min. of two rounds if blocking. If you can't pull that off, or it slips into three rounds of taking fire from the Falcon, it's almost game over for you.

That's where it went in rounds 3 and 4. Denis was able to put hits into ships that were firing on him and I was losing out on getting the two or three hits I needed to finish Han off. But when the blocking cleared and Han popped free I was able to chase him down and kill him with a B-wing shot. Then it was a rookie and Blue vs a PS 0 Wedge.

A small "preview" from today's Regionals here in Copenhagen Denmark. The TO will soon post the complete listing via email:

Thanks for the info Forensicus and congratulations! A 3 ship rebel build vs another 3 ship rebel build in the final!

Was wave 4 legal?

Attendance was 28. Cut to top 8. I lost to grish in the semis. So 1st place was

Han Solo + luke + predator + millenum + C3P0 + Engine upgrade

3 x bandits Z95

Seriously Whisper was ridiculous. I might as well just have played him alone...surprisingly only two phantoms in the whole tournament. Oh, C3P0 with millenum title is another broken thing. No wonder grish won. You cant keep up with a boosting falcon so focus fire on it is very tough to do. Then he just evade garanteeing 2 evade. How many 3-4 hits shot you need to bring him down? You are likely to be dead before

I like that winning build, but why Predator instead of Push the Limit on Han Solo? It's not like you can use both abilities.

So Han can have more flexibility with his rerolls and be in less trouble if he gets Action denied. Also really frees up your dial if you're not trying to clear Stress all the time.

Boost vs evade works for options if you are blocked. If you can't do the boost and have to pick something else, you pick evade. You boost to range 3 to get the extra defence die and if you can't you take the evade token.

Don't want to get this thread sidetracked again, but ptl is still the better choice i think for hte boost evade than the predator. You just don't do it constantly to focus + evade or w/e and open yourself up to getting blocked. You just use it when you need it. It's not like the predator isn't already situational itself.

Also I don't know how to say this without sounding pompous, but some of these international regionals just aren't that big so take it with a grain of salt. You won't see a 3 small ship rebel build when a 50 player domestic regional. And so far at least half of them have not had wave 4 legal.

While I don't disagree with you, I do think it's a shame that you don't see those 3 named pilot small ship builds more often. Even with Predator being a thing, I don't see people giving up their Blues, Academy Pilots, Rookies, etc. any time soon. And if the number of Z's that are showing up in the top 8 the last few weeks is any indication, it's almost as if people have just accepted that they're going to be giving their opponents rerolls and decided that it isn't that big of a disadvantage.

Predator was intended i think to maybe influence the meta, but unless you see it spammed on black squadrons (and maybe even then) it's not the thing influencing the meta. That would be the phantoms, but that's a whole seperate issue. In the end, it seems that perhaps no single upgrade card can have such an important impact on the meta, because any given card seems to show up in like 10% of all the squads. Even staples like swarm tactics, ptl, falcon crew etc. Many of the cards seem to be linked to particular builds. Predator is interesting in that it doesn't have to be. Often people seem to be using it to essentially focus + tl on ships that dont want the stress from ptl or have other options for actions, and unless it's a range one shot, or a turn when they k turned and only have predator one reroll is usually enough.

Only one non turret or phantom in the top 8.

We (my wife and I) moved this weekend and I just checked my [email protected] email - I have a few minor updates for the Frankfurt Regional.

#9 and #10 have been clarified. For quick reference, here are the Final Cut + Top Third again:

Frankfurt, Germany
June 28, 2014
JK Entertainment
Attendance: 32
Final Cut: 5 rounds of swiss, no Final cut
Wave 4 not legal
  • Winner: 4x Royal Guard Pilot + Push the Limit
  • #2: Howlrunner; 5x Academy Pilot; Scimitar Sq. Pilot + Assault Missiles
  • #3: Biggs; 2x Dagger Sq. Pilot + Advanced Sensors; Rookie Pilot
  • #4: Howlrunner, Mauler Mithel, 5x Obsidian Sq. Pilot
  • #5: 3x Bounty Hunter
  • #6: Howlrunner + PtL, 6x Obsidian Sq. Pilot
  • #7: Roark + Ion Canon Turret; 2x Prototype Pilot; 2x Rookie Pilot
  • #8: Howlrunner + Swarm Tactics + Hull Upgrade; Black Sq. Pilot + Draw their Fire; Obsidian Sq. Pilot; 4x Academy Pilot
  • #9: Soontir Fel + Push the Limit + Stealth Device; Howlrunner + Determination; 4x Academy Pilot
  • #10: Wedge + Swarm Tactics + Shield Upgrade; Blue Sq. Pilot + Heavy Laser Cannon + Advanced Sensors; Blue Sq. Pilot + Heavy Laser Cannon + Fire Control System

I personally find this particular result very interesting simply because nobody had yet placed very highly, let alone won before, with 4 Royal Guard pilots. Two other 4x Royal Guard squads made the Top 8 cut, but were then immediately eliminated. The #2 squad looks like TK4334, who flew the same squad and won two other Regionals with it! Just like in the states, it seems the best players consistently do extremely well...

Also, wave 4 will be legal at the Nuernberg, Germany Regional in week 11. (next weekend, July 12)

Heh, according to this post http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/82153-question-for-those-who-won-a-2013-regional-championship/page-3 there were only 4 people at last year's Utah regionals. I didn't start getting into the tournament scene until this year, so I don't know what last year's was like, but the Store Championships I went to this year were all more than 16 players each, with only a handful of cross-overs (i.e. same players going to different championships). I can only imagine had Regionals been here, it would have had at least as many as a store championship had, and probably more (since there'd only be one to go to instead of multiples).

The tournament scene has been picking up steam...

I completely agree with this.

The only reason I didn't make it to Boise was cash. $100 in Gas, $150 in (cheapest) hotel, food, then all of that with a one-year old, on top of an absolutely ridiculous $20 entry fee? C'mon.

Had it been held here I would have gladly participated, despite the $20 joke.

Hopefully FFG puts next year in Portland and/or Seattle. WHERE they belong!

So - we in Copenhagen just held the 2nd Danish regional (July 6) at the fantastic Faraos Cigarer.

Copenhagen, Denmark

July 6, 2014

Faraos Cigarer, Skindergade

Attendance: 22

Final Cut: 5 Round Swiss, Cut to Top 4

Wave 4 Not Allowed

And now for the Top 4 lists:

4th "Bluebacca"
Chewbacca + Draw their Fire, Intelligence Agent, C3-P0, Falcon, APL
2 x Blue Sq + Adv Sensors
3rd:
Howlrunner + Swarm
Backstabber
Black Squadron + Swarm
4 x Academy
2nd: "X Wing Elite"
Wedge + R2, PTL
Luke + R2-D2, DTF, Shield Upgrade
Wes Janson + VI
1st: "WWI"
Ibitsam + Oppurtunist, HLC
Wes Janson + VI
Wedge + Determination
It was a great tourney, and a lot of fun was had. Pictures and more lists will be posted on my blog over the coming days (probably Weds night). I'll post a link when that's done.

Thanks for the info Forensicus and congratulations! A 3 ship rebel build vs another 3 ship rebel build in the final!

Great, thanks. Looking forward to the full report. #5 -#7 would be good to get in particular, since I'm trying to get Top Third.

I wish we could see more regionals with wave 4 information.

Any word on those videos of the AZ regional? Someone a few pages back said they had vids of the top table, and were just working on getting them up.

The videos from Wave 4 are being worked on by another volunteer who filmed them at the Mesa AZ Regional. I'll check in with him to see how things are progressing in terms of editing/publishing.

and the Final Match can be seen here:

I wish we could see more regionals with wave 4 information.

I agree. I'll at least see about pulling in all the data for the one new wave 4 Regional we do have this week, and post the summary statistics. With all these juicy YT-1300 flying around, I think its time for some good old-fashioned Swarms to come back in style!

#6 (incomplete info):

Omicron w/HLC and Adv Sensors and Rebel Captive

Turr Phennir w/Vet. Inst and Stealth

Soontir Fel w/PtL and Stealth

#7 (a bit uncertain):

Jendon w/ ST-321 and Wepons Engineer

2 x Scimitars w/Assault Missiles

1 Royal TIE Guard

On #6 and #7, I am going to guess at the final points.

#6: Engine Upgrade on the Omicron Group Pilot (100 points)

#7: Push the Limit on the Royal Guard TIE (99 points)

If you can confirm, that would be great. Here's the summary as I have pulled everything in for stats tracking:

København, Denmark

I just checked my [email protected] email... I have had some wave 4 results there waiting for me for about 30 hours now! Oops. Moving has been chaotic... taking care of things like putting our bed back together has taken priority so I hadn't checked that email. :P

It was a small tournament, only 13 people, but here are the results:

Event date: July 5, 2014
Venue Name: Fantasiapelit Turku
Location: Turku, Finland
Attendance: 13 players
Wave 4: legal
Final cut: Top 4
Winner: 99 points
"Echo" / Veteran Instincts / Fire-Control System / Recon Specialist / Advanced Cloaking Device
"Howlrunner" / Swarm Tactics / Hull Upgrade
3x Academy Pilot
2nd Place: 99 points
2x Bounty Hunter / Recon Specialist
Sigma Squadron Pilot / Stygium Particle Accelerator
3rd Place: 100 points
"Howlrunner" / Swarm Tactics
"Rexler Brath" / Predator / Engine Upgrade
3x Academy Pilot
4th Place: 100 points
"Soontir Fel" / Push the Limit
"Howlrunner"
4x Obsidian Squadron Pilot
Commentary:
  • Echo wins the 13 person tournament!
  • The 2nd place had a generic Phantom Pilot, which is the first time a generic Phantom has made Final Cut / Top Third.
  • The TIE Defender finally makes a showing in the Final Cut! The TIE Defender and E-wing are both still seeing very low usage though, especially when using weighted averages. More specific stats updates to come.
I'll pull everything into statistics tracking later and summarize. The only Regional we don't have info for this last weekend is the one in Santiago, Chile, at El Muro. There was already a Regional in Chile June 7, at Warpig Games, so I don't know if this is a typo, or if there is in fact a 2nd Regional in the same city.

Also worth noting the entire top cut was Imperial, as well as 3/4 being Howl Miniswarms. Looks like people were expecting some Falcons but they must not have showed (or didn't do very well)

2nd Place: 99 points
2x Bounty Hunter / Recon Specialist
Sigma Squadron Pilot / Stygium Particle Accelerator

^ That was my squad, I had the highest W/L ratio in the tournament, I won every game expect the final.... *sigh* ..oh well, next time!

Reasons for my defeat in the final match: Echo... And I was rolling some seriously bad dice at one point.

I can also confirm that we did have 2 players with Falcons (Chewbacca + 2x Blue Squadron, and Chewie + Corran Horn + Airen Cracken, if I remember correctly), but neither one of them did very well and both dropped out quite early. We also had one squad consisting entirely of Tie Bombers, but it wasn't as successfull as the player thought, interesting build though.

Overall it was a really nice event and I can't wait for the next one.

Yep. I was pretty scared about that final game after our first match, though I rolled my dice horribly in that one.. :)

We had the same W/L ratio (I was lucky to get BYE first round), but you probably won in squad points.

Lost only to you in third round :(

I had like 3-4 variations for my "Echo" and decided to try Recon Specialist the first time in "Echo" and it was amazing. I didn't need Outmaneuver EPT to Outmaneuver my opponents.. :P It is just so crazy, but it can go Horribly wrong with "Echo". 1 error and you're done with it..

There were only 3 Rebel squads out of total 13 people. I don't remember how they placed other than that XXXZ got 5. place.

3 Rebel squads were

Airen Cracken / Swarm Tactics

Garven Dreis

Biggs Darklighter / R2-F2

Tarn Mison / R7

Chewbacca / Push the Limit / Recon Specialist / Millennium Falcon / Nien Numb

2x Blue Squadron / Advanced Sensors

Chewbacca

Corran Horn

Lt. Blount / Deadeye / Assault Missiles

Some imperial lists. I don't know how they placed.

Royal Guard Interceptor / Swarm Tactics

Royal Guard Interceptor

3x Alpha Squadron Interceptor

"Echo" / Advanced Cloaking Device (If I remember correctly)

3x Saber Squadron Interceptor / Veterans Instincts (I'm not sure)

Can't remember what else this one had...

"Echo" / Advanced Cloaking Device

Carnor Jax / Shield Upgrade / Marksmanship

Turr Phennir / Shield Upgrade

Captain Jonus / Squad Leader? / Seismic Charges

Gamma Squadron / Assault Missiles / Seismic Charges

Gamma Squadron / Homing Missiles / Seismic Charges

Gamma Squadron / Concussion Missiles / Seismic Charges

I don't remember last 2 squads that well.. Didn't go that well for those 2.

Krassis Trelix / HLC

Howlrunner / Swarm Tactics?

3x Academy Tie?

Last one was some Interceptor Squad as well.

But few words about the tournament itself. I don't really have bad things to say about it other than that there wasn't really a chance to eat or anything since schedule was pretty tight. I was pretty hungry and tired in the end. Atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Everyone was chatting about the game and builds etc and most importantly everyone seemed to have a good time there.

Some funny moments from there.

4x Bomber vs XXXZ had funny ending in their game. It was Gamma sq with no ordnance and 1-2 hull left against Cracken with 1 hull + Tarn left flying circles around asteroid. They thought it would be draw if Cracken died because they both would've had 25 points left. And Cracken did die after not using Focus.. But it turned out that last Bomber had concussions instead of 5pts missiles. Making it 24pts Bomber so Bomber guy was celebrating surprising victory over a draw.. However... they both misscalculated that 25pts is more than 24.. So XXXZ was awarded modified win after few minutes of randomness...

In my game against Echo + 2 Interceptors. My enemy 1 shotted my "Echo" with his "Echo" through an asteroid me rolling all blanks.. and after that my stressed Academy pilot shooting his cloaked "Echo" from range 3 with no howlrunner providing rerolls.. 2 hits and he rolled all blank/focus with no focus token left on his "Echo"... and I almost forgot to shoot with my 2 lonely Academies..

My last swiss round agaist Bluebacca.. I was hunting his Chewbacca that had 1 hull left for like 6 rounds straight with my "Echo" and few Ties.. Finally destroying it after losing Ties in the process. Chewbacca is pretty durable I can say...

I hope we get some tournaments here in Helsinki too. Helsinki area store activity is mostly WH40k and MTG, but X-Wing is getting slowly bigger!
