2014 Regionals results

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

Update: I just emailed the five stores that will have Regionals this weekend. I would have done this sooner, but I was busy this week getting ready for a conference presentation.

Week 2:
May 9, 2014. Sharq, Kuwait. Good Game
May 10, 2014. Aldershot, United Kingdom. TGS
May 11, 2014. Sydney, NSW, Australia. Good Games Town Hall
May 11, 2014. Odense, Denmark. Dragons Lair
May 11, 2014. Brest, France. Croc Jeux.

I'm going to try and track down the Dublin, Ireland results through their Facebook page.

@MajorJuggler Barcelona (Spain) regional is May 17th. I'll do my best to report back. So far 45 attendees confirmed :)

Thanks! What's the store name?

I missed this earlier so I just added it to the list. It's not on FFG's website yet.

The last lists from the Top 8 @ La Carte Chance

  • 5th place : Jan Ors + Blaster turret + RS ; Ibstisam + PtL + Engine Upg. ; Blue Sq. pilot + HLC
  • 6th place : Dutch + Ion Cannon Turret ; 3x Blue Sq. Pilot + FCS
  • 7th place : Han + Gunner ; Chewie + Luke
  • 8th place : Biggs ; 3x Blue Sq. Pilot + AS

One more list from the Top 8 @ les Forges de Lumière (yes it was a TOP 8, confirmed !)

  • 8th place : Krassis + HLC + Recon spec. + Seismic charges ; 2x RGP + VI + SD

I'm doing what I can to have the remaining lists (2 Empire, 1 Rebels)!

EDIT : I did a mistake in the red list !

  • 5th place : Jan Ors + Blaster turret + RS ; Ten Numb + VI + AS + Engine Upg. ; Blue Sq. pilot + HLC

OK, got it. So to make sure I have this right, the correct list is:

5th place : Jan Ors + Blaster turret + RS ; Ten Numb + VI + AS + Engine Upg. ; Blue Sq. pilot + HLC

Were are the rebel swarms? :(

It's only the first week. Give it time. To be fair though, most of the Rebel lists in the Store Championship thread were of the 4-ship variety. Rebel Swarm should be much more prevalent in wave 4, but with most of the Regionals still left to play, there is plenty of time to see meta shifts!

I got an email from Good Games in Kuwait. They had 10 people, played 4 rounds of swiss without a final cut. Interestingly, 3 out of the 10 took Darth Vader in a TIE Advanced... and they all placed dead last. Here are the detailed results.

Wll just got home from GG Town Hall for the Sydney, Australia regionals.

10 players (Thats what they get for holding it on Mothers Day I suppose)

We played 4 swiss rounds and then cut to a top 4.

Winner's List

3x Dagger Squadron with Heavy Laser and Fire Control

2nd List (me)

Chewie - PtL, Falcon

2x Daggers - Adv Sensore

The guy I beat in the top 4 cut had:

Howlrunner

Backstabber

Mauler

Obsidian Squadron

3x Academy Pilots

not sure of upgrades (if any)

Other top 4 list (i beat in a prelim round) had:

Bounty Hunter - recon specialist

Turr Phenir - PtL, Stealth

Soontir Fel - PtL, stealth

The ship breakdown of Monroeville's Top 8 :

12 TIE Fighters

9 X-Wings

7 B-Wings

3 TIE Interceptors

1 Firespray

1 Shuttle

1 YT-1300

1 Y-Wing

0 A-Wings

0 HWK-290s

0 TIE Bombers

0 TIE Advanceds (lol)

And the ship breakdown of Monroeville's Top 16 :

18 X-Wings

16 B-Wings

16 TIE Fighters

6 TIE Interceptors

4 Y-Wings

2 YT-1300s

2 Firesprays

1 Shuttle

1 A-Wing

0 HWK-290s

0 TIE Bombers

0 TIE Advanceds (lol)

I find this to be quite amusing.

I went to out to a NOVA warm up tournament a few weeks ago and faced 4 Shuttles and 7 Interceptors during the 4 rounds.

Apparently they all changed their minds!

Updates!

#1: I just got a PM from polmoneys:

"In Barcelona the shop is called Kaburi.
In Madrid attendance is 145 (!) players."
Wow! 145 players! Does anyone have any information on this?

#2:

Howlrunner

Backstabber

Mauler

Obsidian Squadron

3x Academy Pilots

not sure of upgrades (if any)

Thanks! That list is 100 points on the nose, so no upgrades. :)

#3: Good Game from Kuwait emailed me back, they had 4 rounds of swiss and no final cut.

#4: I am rethinking how to report the statistical summary of results. Rather than Top 16/Top 4/Top 1, I am leaning towards reporting just 2 sets of numbers:

  • Any squad that made the Final Cut, OR is in the Top Third based on attendance.
  • Just the Regional Winners, but using a weighted average proportional to the number of attendees.

I believe it. X-Wing seems to be huge in Spain. There was something called the "Third Ludorum Red Five Tournament" on Nov. 30 in Spain, and it had 101 participants.

Winner:

Howlrunner + Determination

Alpha Squadron Pilot + Stealth Device

2x Academy Pilot

2x Alpha Squadron Pilot

Well that's the second time that squad has won now! This was a smaller tournament, but it looks like there were still plenty of Turrets around. This is the exact same squad that I tested on the table a few times (+/- Determination) after wave 2 came out... people must somehow be reading my mind! ;)

Top 4:

Howlrunner + Adrenaline Rush
Backstabber
Mauler Mithel + Adrenaline Rush
2x Black Squadron Pilot
Dark Curse

This adds up to 97 points, so I am going to assume that the two Black Squadron Pilots had Veteran Instincts. If you can clarify that would be nice, but its an obviously PS6+ bid so I couldn't see VI not being taken.

The Black Squadrons had Vet. Instincs. It has been changed now. :)

Winner:

Howlrunner + Determination

Alpha Squadron Pilot + Stealth Device

I hereby christen that squad the Howlrunner Interceptor Swarm Hybrid, or HISH for short.

As the first one to fly this squad and win with it in a regional (I also came up with the idea and tested it during the Kessal runs) Ive always called it a Hybrid interceptor/fighter swarm. I cant tell you how pleased I am to see my squad win a second regional!

I came up with the idea by figuring out my kessal run winning team (Howl, Mauler, Backstaber, 4 academies I think) and figuring out how many interceptors I could upgrade by removing an academy and not having any named pilots. the SD was just a bonus that let me set up in a nice formation

I wasn't in attendance for Dublin, but I am asking around now to find out what I can. I'll update this as I find out more.

Event Date: May 3rd, 2014

  • Venue Name: Gamer's World
  • Location: Dublin, Ireland
  • Attendance: either 12 or 14
  • Final Cut: No top cut, 4 rounds of swiss.

Winner:

Tie Swarm. (will clarify when I get more details)

Tetran Cowell + Veteran Instincts + Stealth Device

Howlrunner + Stealth Device

Torresse: And how did you set it up, and how did you fly it?

I'm keen on going for this for the Swedish Regionals...

Edited by Toppis

Assuming he's running it the same way he did during store champs... he flies it 3 wide, two deep

Acad Alpha Acad

Alpha HR Alpha

With the lead alpha having a stealth device on it. He likes to close to R1, so you have 3, 4, 3, 3, 2, 3 dice shooting at you... and he turtles up with HR... so you're left deciding - do I take a R1 shot on an academy, R1 shot on an Alpha w/ SD, or R2 shot on an Alpha w/o SD, or R2 shot on HR with evade? There really isn't any good answer to that question. It's likely either HR or the lead Alpha, but you could make a case for any of the others.

In other news, I just looked through the results thus far... and am I correct to say that I'm the only one representing A wing(s) in the top 16?

Nope. Two Prototype Pilots made fourth place at the Kuwait Regional, and two Prototypes got 15th place at the Bellevue, NE Regional.

Ah, that's why... I was searching through "Green" since I didn't see a compilation page yet. But the Kuwait only had 10 people, right? And seeing that both are 2 prototypes, I'm making an assuming that they're rebel swarms?

Looks like it. No one has flown the A-Wing like you have thus far. Although three Blues and two Prototypes would be a fairly potent swarm, so I wouldn't quite write that squad off!

Not writing that off at all... But it's a completely different flying style and purpose of the A wings in a 5 rebel swarm, than as one of my main 4 ships. Huh... this would lead me to reconsider running with an A wing in my list this weekend... ooorrr... I could just leave it in there and represent!

Torresse: And how did you set it up, and how did you fly it?

What Khyros said. I playtested this pretty extensively by myself a while back and found that it has a ton of firepower. But on the initial joust you need to be prepared to lose at least one PS1 ship per round before it has a chance to fire. The idea is to make all of the targets as unattractive as possible so your opponent can't go for the obvious kill that will quickly reduce your firepower. Picture:

Great, thanks. I was going to try and track them down on Facebook but I'll let you follow up. Here is the Facebook event page:

Yeah, I haven't pulled everything into Excel yet. I'll try to get to it sometime later this week and post the results for Winners, and Final Cut / Top Third.

Khyros and MajorJuggler has the set up perfect. Ill get acdemies and sd alpha into range 1. During the finals I got into range 1, he fired at SD alpha with 4 dice, hit, hit, crit, crit. I got, dodge, eyeball, eyeball, eyeball. spent my focus and made him rage.

For your information, the TO from l'Isle Jourdain told me he will send the last 3 lists here.

And the tournament @ Croc Jeux - Brest will be the 18th, not the 11th, so that's why we haven't the results yet !

EDIT : 100th post on this topic !
