Episode VII Cast

By FootNote, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Yeah, I'm done with the argument. We all know these people whining about a "lack of diversity" wouldn't be doing so if there was any plurality of people cast but white men. Liberals.

Looks like somebody is a graduate of the FoxNews Anger Management curriculum. Top of his class.

Say, how about keeping politics off these boards?

Modern Liberalism is a defect of the mind, not necessarily a political stance.

As a conservative myself, with little regard for the liberal mindset, I must say I am very much displeased you are bringing all your political baggage here to this forum. This is not the place for it.

(Mind you, I'm also not too keen on some of the hyperbolic sky-is-falling-all-white-male-cast nonsense. Considering how little we know at this time about anything. But you took it way too far, sir. Please make with the not doing it. Thank you.)

It gets old being a supervillain for being white, and the double standards wear on you. But you're right, I will again try to leave the argument.

Any ideas on what Max Von Sydow could be doing? Maybe a politician?

I imagine she'll be a Solo, but not Jaina. They are clearly trying to draw a firm line between the canon and the Legends label stuff (formerly known as the Expanded Universe).

Whether you are right or not in the end, your reasoning is flawed. They have made it quite clear they have the freedom to pick and choose any and all aspects of the EU/Legends they want to reuse or incorporate in the stories moving forward. There is zero reason to believe they would not choose to include Jaina if it suited their purposes.

I'd agree with ccarlson101 here...also, the line that they're drawing is simply between the works themselves, not the content therein.

Mandos in big role, I'm not getting my hopes up simply because it's the sort of thing a director would look at and say "eh, that's too much like the Clones... lets go with CG Manbearpigs instead."

Also in Star Wars you could have twi'lekbearpigs. Half Twi'lek...half bear...half pig.

This "EU is dead" gloom and doom is really starting to get to me...

Does no one realize that by not lashing themselves to the EU's mast we're actually getting MORE Star Wars?

I just feel like Chris Columbus just got back from the New World and everyone's complaining because they love the India EU... It's still there, there's just two more continents worth of content to explore now...

I was going to marry it. :(

BUT you don't understand...

I was going to marry it. :(

Then stay away from the DC universe, she's so nutts she's had to start assigning her EU personalities numbers instead of names.

Bah! The DC and Marvel superhero universe toughens you up to this sort of thing! Star Wars is still young, its has only had 1 reboot thus far! Marvel has at least 2 universe wide reboots and I think DC is up to 4 now.

Seriously though, having followed superhero comics for a time, rebooting really doesn't phase me much. I mean, think of how much poor Spiderman has gone through in just the past 10 years.

I am totally serial, you guys. We need manbearpigs to fight the Jedi.

I've changed my vote. The bad guys are going to be a liberal hippy Bothan/Wookiee/Gamorrean alliance. :P

And once again, Star Wars is a male dominated galaxy.

Nope. That new chick that is "perhaps" playing Han and Leia's daughter.... she'll be the focus of the story. Guaranteed. How do I know this?

Disney.

Disney now owns Star Wars. Star wars has always appealed to boys. Star Wars has never appealed to girls of an equal value. Disney doesn't care about making a great movie. Disney cares about making money. Disney owns the rights to the most profitable franchise IP the world has ever known, and it is guaranteed to attract the male audience. Which is great for Disney. But that isn't enough for Disney. Disney also needs to attract the female audience. And the best way to do that is to do what Disney does best - Disney Princess.

Not only that - but it will be the same Disney Princess we saw in Frozen. It will be the same formula. The whole movie will be another marketing ploy for the liberation of women who have been oppressed by the male patriarchy. Why? Because nothing sells better to females than Feminism. And I can't say that I blame anyone for using it. The concepts of Feminism and gender equality are really good fantasies.

I'll go see it. I'm sure it will be a decent quality movie. I mean, one doesn't have to agree with a movie's moral lesson to appreciate the skill of movie-making.

Also... probably half of those people are going to be in some heavy make-up, or will be digitally animated as another species. So what they look like in real life probably doesn't matter.

And the counterpoint:Lucasfilm.

Disney doesn't own star wars, they own the whole company. And anyone with a business degree will tell you when you aquire a profitable company that really didn't need you to buy it, you leave it the hell alone so it can keep making money.

Aside from the castle opener (now featuring a rebel/new republic/Jedi flag) and a couple guys in accounting to help with the taxes, there is no difference. Lucasfilm is still Lucasfilm, they just have "A Walt Disney Company" in fine print on the stationary.

Can someone explain to me why the critique that the cast could maybe use some more ladies is evoking so much anger here? I hope to have kids in the near future. I'd love to share Star Wars with them. One of those kids might even be a daughter who knows. I'd love for the new movies to have a few potential role models for her, but as the casting stands now she'll have two choices one of which is old enough to be her grandmother. Sure there are still characters like Ashoka, Bo-Katan and a few others from Clone Wars and hopefully some from Rebels, but Star Wars on the big screen is something different and to be honest I don't want my future daughter using Padme as a role model.

I wish it weren't, but the truth is that Disney probably told Abrams, Arndt and Kasdan exactly what races and sex to put in the movie. A memo stating something like, "our demographics show that there needs to be one African American, one Latin or Asian, and at least two women in central roles. The women may also be one of these races." Cynical? Yes, but also a reality. While art survives, it survives in spite of it being a business.

On a lighter note, I am happy with the cast. I probably put less emphasis on it than most. To me, film is mostly about script, direction, and editing. I can't make a call about Arndt (though it matters little now that he isn't even being billed for the script) as Toy Story Three doesn't give me an idea of what he could do with a more mature script. I am however extremely pleased about their tapping Kasdan as the writer. If you don't know what he can do, IMDB him, he's awesome.

My hesitation comes with the ringmaster of it all, Abrams. While he is technically proficient, and knows how to get a mean lens flare, I have seldom become emotionally involved in his movies. While not an expert I've seen Mission Impossible 3, Super 8, and both Star Trek films. While I have been entertained by these films, they never seem to leave an impact on me. They're fast, slick, and fun, but despite their effort toward characterization they are (to me) the Chinese food of film; an hour and forty five minutes later I'm hungry again. Am I alone in this opinion, and if not, will the films be good despite it?

P.S. - The Chinese food comment is just an analogy, I'm not racist and I love Chinese food. ;)

This is more or less my opinion of Abrams as well, he is a button pusher. He makes very good movies from a technical standpoint and he gets great performances from his actors, but he just isn't Joss Whedon. I wonder if Abrams will deliver the whole package. I will say this, I didn't dislike Into Darkness but it's not the Reboot 2 I wanted to see either. However, the Star Trek Reboot I did enjoy quite a lot, so I'm not totally down on Abrams either, and with the inclusion of Kasdan in the screenplay/script crafting I overall have a good feeling about the film.

Well, at least with Kasdan writing the script they won't strand Han on a planet because he's mouthing off to Luke. :D

True but in the Reboot this line is one of the best **** pieces of dialogue and Bruce Greenwood was awesome..

If the movie doesnt open with Hot Hail, I shall be sadly disappointed!

He's serving up power potions in the cantina............

I do hope to see him in a white Imperial officer uniform.

I don't think we are going to 'see' him at all, he is voice acting, so maybe a new Darth.

It boggles my mind that there are people on these forums who are opposed to a roughly 50:50 gender balance in the films. If you haven't realized by now, playing these RPGs, that gender does not define a character, I'm not sure when you will.

Qui-Gon Jin and Mace Windu could have easily been females, and it wouldn't have changed the plot at all. Same for, say, Chewbacca or Boba Fett. And honestly, there's no reason Darth Vader couldn't have originally been Luke's mother. The character career/class, motivation, obligation, those are things that define the character most. Just look at Knights of the Old Republic or Mass Effect to see how you can have a cast of strong, interesting main characters of equal gender balance in a sci-fi setting. Even The Clone Wars did a better job of it than the films.
