New front line game mat arrived!!!

By Wayne Argabright, in X-Wing

this is by far the BEST mat i have ever seen or used.. and i have used and seen pretty much ALL of them and own quite a few of them as well..

http://www.frontlinegaming.org/shop/frontline-gaming-and-tablewar-gaming-mat-space-4x4%E2%80%B2-pre-order/

The mat IS a giant mouse pad, and the colors are vibrant and not over done... It rolls up, lays flat, and doesn't slide around deadens sound and vibrations too. The only down side is the price at 65.00 bucks its a bit expensive, but that is for a 4x4 mat, the SMALLEST size they currently make, with the other being 6x4,,, However the mat is WAAAAY more vibrant than my Corsec engineering mat, and its the same price, and the Corsec mat is just felt fabric that looks like its been washed a few times!!!!!

Other mats i have used: Vinyl good picture quality, cheap, but slides around and has a cross hatch pattern, have also seen vinyl mats crack from being rolled to tightly, and or getting creased. some mats want to roll back up as well...

Various fabric mats.. ALL bunch up and slide around unless you tack them down with something, price is variable and so is the image quality with most looking like something that got washed a few too many times, potential to get creased as well.

Foam trifold board Elmers.. cheap works pretty good solid black, not very portable.. doesn't deaden sound, ships can slide.

raw neoprene sheet, grey color, wants to roll back up...medium price on Ebay

I will post pics once i get some kind of photo account, unless i can link it with Google chrome and or plus which i haven't tried yet.... Anyway bottom line great mat, IMHO makes ALL other mats obsolete!! Well worth the money!!!

If it wasn't a foot over size I would probably get one.

I will hold my breath until you post pictures...

... passes out

I looked around on the website and they make a 6x4 version that could be good for Epic play, or even just really big squads or multiplayer.

An Albino Space Cow sighting!

was wondering if anybody would get that..lol

Looks great. How is the "grip" of the material? Do ships slide? Does it resist bumping? How do dice roll? Are templates easy to use on the material?

For the price, the thing better be the best mat ever, so I would hope for glowing reviews. Thanks in advance for answering questions.

I need stats for the Space Cow!!!!!!

grip is just like a giant mouse pad... non slip... resists bumping very well...dampens dice sounds dice roll normally.. templates are easy to use... seriously go get your computer mouse pad its basically the same thing!!

By grip I think he means the top... everyone knows neoprene are great for table grip but many have comment that the top fabric is slick (so mice glide easy) so models are easier to bump, slip etc.

top has a good mix of grippyness... not sticky but smooth ,but not slippery... seriously it is JUST like a mouse pad if that helps... a cool looking super huge mouse pad...

Someone should tell that company to they could make a killing if they made mats like that in a 3x3. Sitting on a gold mine Trebeck!

The graphic on the looks REALLY good. I might need to pick up a 6x4 version.

Not sure on the dial (multiple stalls?), but one Action it's action bar has been spoiled: Jumps Over Moon.

Whenever I finally get around to getting a mat, this one is high on my list.

A cow can't really walk/run through space but I reckon they produce enough methane to at least propel themselves a short distance each turn.

Perhaps a white 1 forward. Red 2 forward.

Can bank at red 1.

K-Turns would be unlikely with the their biological method of propulsion and trying to twist their body to change direction.

Pilot Skill: 1

Weapon: 0

Agility: 1

Hull: 4 ( because it is clearly large )

Shield: 0

This is assuming the cow isn't a "huge ship", though it does look plausible for that. Perhaps it will be the first Empire ship, Empire Prime Rib.

Cards

Bio-bombs:

Attack ( special) Range 1 - when a ship enters the rear arc the cow can lift it's tail and...brown the cockpit window. Ships loses all focus tokens and counts as agility 1 and pilot skill 1 until he can clean the window.

Udder Devastation:

When destroyed, the cow explodes creating a small nebula of frozen milk crystals which forms a large ball of milky ice. This functions just like an asteroid token.

Edit: the rest of the cow forms meaty asteroids nearby.

That's what I've got so far. Hope it helps inspire better ideas

Dam it I came up against one of those cows, totally trashed my 4 X-Wings with their 360 firing arc and secondary cow poop weapon, dam those imperial slugs!

Couldn't you mark off a 3x3 area with a sharpie or whatever? Then you would have a legitimate play area and a border to keep your cards, tokens, dead ships, etc.

One could - I would want that pre marked if that were the case. Don't want bad penmanship to un-pretty my shiny new toy.
