With the release of the Transport this week, earlier some lucky fellows, and the Tantive IV on its way where do you think X-Wing or FFG will go next? Will they perhaps create a spin off grounds based combat game to coexist with X-Wing? Or will we see larger ships included in X-Wing if not a new Capital Ship based one?
Ground Combat or Capital Ships?
I think they'll make more starfighters.
X-wing the starfighter game is their money-spinner. The new stuff they make adds to it. We'll probably some sort of EU sourced Imperial corvette, and after that? Tilesets, turbolaser towers, that sort of thing. Stuff that fits in X-wing and in X-wing's scale.

I agree, though at this point I trust FFG enough that I think they could come up with something that would work for ground units but still feel like it was in the same family as the flight path system.
Trying to run two competing incompatible miniatures games is not a smart business strategy. Beyond that there isn't enough ground combat tech from Star Wars to matter. We'd have Snowspeeders, AT-ATs, ATST's Ewoks, Speeder Bikes, and generic ground troops. The environment would need a lot more work than space, and it wouldn't sell as well as X-wing while also cutting into X-Wing sales.
A Capitol ship game has the same financial issues, but would raise the cost further, and leave a lot of players wishing they could combine the two into something more inclusive.

I'll definitely agree that the flight path system is poor for ground units. Those units just have to many movement options and impediments while starships should be governed more by inertia which can be represented through the templates.
A Capital Ship game could be "cool" but for the era there aren't enough "movie canon" ships. If you expanded into the EU you run into the "new normal" although I do hope they keep a lot of the "crunch" we know even if the stories change. I will say that Fighter and Capital ships can fit into the same rules system although at that level individual starfighters should be replaced (or represent) larger groups of fighters. When looking at SWSE's rule I believe a fighter group could be about the same as a light capital ship in combat effectiveness.
I don't know that I'd be interested in them enough to buy in, but miniatures games based on Star Wars ground combat and capital ships could be fun.
The slow pacing of the FlightPath system seems perfect for naval warfare.
For this game, all FFG needs to do is stretch things out for another year or so. Summer of 2015 we are going to get a new movie and I bet FFG is already planning on adding ships from that move to our game.
We are also getting a new Star Wars TV show. It might actually be more compatable with X-wing than the new movie since it is set in the era of the rebellion.
As for Ground Combat or Capital ships, I could see these as different games, but not integrated into X-wing. The Tantive and the Transport are already too big to play in anything but the largest (epic level) games. As ships of the Star Wars go the Tative and Transport are pretty small. (Though if you look closely both ships types were used quite extensively in the battle of Endor.)
I think anything bigger than the Tantive just won't work. I am not just talking about ISD, Firgates like the Nebula B or Even the Lancer are probably too big and powerful for our little game.
Episode 7 will be released December 18, 2015, not during the summer.
FFG can get probably two more waves out of the EU, and it should be able to get a wave out of the Rebels TV show. Between that, the Imperial huge ships that certainly are coming and the occasional repaint pack, this game should get into 2016 easily. At that point, maybe FFG reboots it to fit with the new trilogy's era.

FFG had a miniatures game already before they started X-Wing, called Dust Warfare.
They also produce 7 different LCG's, none of which are compatible with each other.
I think it would be a better option to do a separate ground scale game.. possibly compatible with X wing, but for further epic ships.. honestly, I would prefer an attack wing style game.. ISDs about a foot long ans blockade runners about an inch and a half.. and all the rest in between...

From the same universe? Not really...
A ground warfare game set in Star Wars could hook me. Add in some sort of compatibility between it and X-Wing, and I would be pretty pleased. Have to be done right, but I'd bite.

But the post I responded to didn't say anything about being in the same universe, only that competing incompatible games are bad... I simply pointed out that FFG already does this.
Given the cost of staying up to date in even a LCG, do you honestly think that they aren't in competition with each other?

I agree I would ask ten to **** up and take my money as I love all things SW and anything FFG touches is gold. I think they should be completely separate systems, however. The 'flying' piece should be done by speeders, swoops, speeder bikes. Having x wings as strike ships would be too difficult to handle and simulate the third dimension as y wings could be in the upper atmosphere targeting AT-ATs. My vote is keep X wing for what it was designed for - a dogfighting game and just make a new system.
A dogfighting game and just make a new system.
Most people understand that a new game wouldn't be as simple as taking the existing X-Wing rules and adding new models to it.
They could for example make a Cap Ship game that still uses the dial system, but with different templates, ones that more accurately reflect the naval combat feel of Star Wars.
But other then that change they could keep a lot of the same basic systems, like ship/pilot cards, upgrade cards, damage deck, ect...
I think that they will do some more capital ships, from the expanded universe:
Take care!
I agree with you. I just think it should be called a different game, with differing rulebooks etc. I kind of doubt they will do that any time soon however, since they've obviously indicated they're making capital ships a part of X wing in the near future. Why make a 1/500th scale blockade runner to turn around and make a 1/1000th version of the same ship. Honestly, I think the capital ships will be too clunky to effectively maneuver around a 3x6 board. Nobody is going to have fun just moving that thing one forward all game. Well, maybe people will, but I derive most of my pleasure playing X wing through the tactics of planned individual ship movement. Making it a larger scale turns more to strategy and less to formation flying.

The Lancer and Tartan are pretty much Imperial versions of CR-90. I'd actually peg them as the most likely two ships for us to see for the Imps.
I would like them to make a capital ship version of this game, but doubt it will happen with the new garbage Disney will be pumping out. Same with a ground combat game. I wasn't sure before, but now I have a feeling Disney will yank the license as soon as it is up.
To be honest, if they do any other miniatures game, I'd like to see a 28mm skirmish campaign system a la necromunda, maybe with shades of infinity blended in there. Not overly bothered about capital ships. Put out a couple of imperial ships to match the corvette and transport, and a couple of more waves of small ships and I'm happy. Oh, and the outrider please!
I doubt they'll yank the contract. I believe FFG had to renegotiate everything after Lucasfilms sold, so Disney has proved they're willing to let FFG corner the SW tabletop gaming market. FFGs revenues on the LCG, Miniatures and RPG is nothing compared to the franchising Disney will get off the movies, rides, video games, tv shows, books, etc.. At least that's my hope.

I would not be to hard on Disney yet. I have a whole pile of miniatures and card ships from bad star wars games before Disney took over.
I would love a reboot of the West End RPG. Loved that game.
28mm skirmish with great models would rock! Add HirstArts Sci-Fi molds and you're golden!
