Will Huge Ship Fortresses See Use as a Strategy?

By Engine25, in X-Wing

It's not a common strategy, but it is one that can be quite annoying to have to play against. I have seen in social settings as well as leagues and tournaments the use of Large ship fortresses, meaning that they are arranged nose to nose or some other way that they do not move and require ships to come to them. Most common that I have seen are the Falcon Fortress and the Lambda fortress, but there is a downside. Except for a Lambda fortress with Advanced Sensors, you lose actions.

Huge ships do not lose actions if they collide with other huge ships. So, lets say, you have two Transports nose to nose near or along the edge, and your fighter escorts just protect the and get buffed by them. Or, a Corvette and a transport. OR, during a team match, each player brings a kitted-out Corvette, they park them nose to nose, and have a shot at any ship that comes within Range 5. This will cover an immense amount of the field as far as firing arc. And each player could likely still afford 2-3 fighters to complement the strategy.

Because they don't use actions, do you think this will be more common than it is on smaller ships? As it stands now it is far from unbeatable but it can be a real nuisance. Thoughts?

Huge ships take face up damage cards every turn they are in contact with eachother. I don't think this will be a thing. At all.

They don't loose actions, but they do take damage from raming each other. You really think both ships taking a critical damage each turn is worth being stationary?

aaaand, ninja'd. That was predictable.

They'll be dealing 2 damage cards to each other every turn (one ship collides; deals one to each, second ship collides; deals another to each), so I find that strategy highly unlikely. Existing ships would kill each other in four rounds without any enemy effort at all, and with poor maeuvering dials it'd be very hard to leave a "fortress".

Not sure why you'd want to anyway, they move pretty slow as is.

Fortresses typically work best (only) with turrets. If you have ships with arcs, most fortress setups have massive blind spots. That would be the case here.

I'd also have to look at the actual templates and base sizes, but it's very likely that if you set up two huge ships facing each other you couldn't get out of it - they don't move as far, and with the rear end fishtailing I don't think there's any move which could let you clear the other.

So there are all sorts of reasons this wouldn't work.

For reasons above, no.

HOWEVER.

I could see a strategy of one Huge Ship intentionally ramming another Huge Ship. You could sacrifice a 30 point transport to sit in the way of a 150 point Corvette or equivalent. Alternatively, we might see more expensive Huge ships that have so much energy regeneration and repair capability that they'll just run over smaller Huge ships and eat the loss. It'll be interesting, but I totally expect to see ramming as a valid strategy.

I can see using Shuttle to Stall with Yorr to grab the stress to build a "Fortress" to attack a big ship, then move off if they start turning toward you.

The Corvette has a turret. Still would be a bad idea due to the massive damage received but the "blind spots" would only be if something closes past minimum range.

You might also see 1 HP Academy TIES or 1HP Bandit Z-95s try and suicide into a Huge ship. They get destroyed but if they only have 1 HP left to lose, the damage inflicted could be worth much more.

I seem to recall that on huge ships even the turrets can't shoot over the blue centerline of the ship.
