No, but you're free to manuever him and choose his actions in an entirely different way. It allows more certianty in your planning.
The old phrase about airplanes is "if it looks good, it flies well" or something like that. I think it was said first about Spitfire. Considering this E-Wing should have an awful dial.

I honestly don't get why everyone sees the E-wing as ugly... I like it's psuedo diving Bird of Prey look.

Everyone seems to call the Ewing ugly, while the Defender gets praised. I don't get that at all.
Even if you do fire first in the next round, maybe you want that target dead this round to take care of any pesky actions it might take.
All of the new ships look gorgeous, and I look forward to nerdgasm'ing over them when they arrive. Especially the Phantom!
I think Coran can work well as a sort of loaded gun, to make your opponent have to think, "Is he going to use his ability this turn? Do I want to hold on to a Focus/Evade just in case?"

The Defender doesn't look like a frowning goblin's nose.

because more is better.
I agree. I don't get the love of the Defender. It looks like a Tie Fighter with more wings on it.
I have seen better models of the E-Wing then the one FFG is using, but they are most likely limited on what model they can use. But over all I like the look of it.

"You know what this ship needs? ALL TEH WINGS!"
I would have prefered if the Defender's wings curved inwards rather than outwards, but that's a relatively minor niggle. I certainly don't dislike it. Likewise, I don't actively dislike the E-Wing - I just don't think it looks as good as the A/B/X/Y-Wings.
