The never-ending focus token

By Explosive Ewok, in X-Wing

So I was playing a game with my wife, and she decided to throw recon specialist on her Han-piloted YT.

Upon taking her first focus and subsequently using it, gaining another, it then dawned on me that the card text doesn't specify how many times the ability can trigger.

Essentially, you pay for this card and will forever until the end of the game have a focus token with you as long as you continue to focus for your action.

Am I correct?

I mean, not counting Dark Curse or Carnor Jax, obviously.

You only get an extra focus token when you you perform the focus action not when you use a focus token. There is a common confusion regarding performing a focus (or evade) action and using a token.

Well... you gain two per Focus action. The only way you'd gain more than the two would be if you get passed one from Garven Dreis or the like.

Ehhh-whaaaa?

How do you perform a focus action without using a token? Here and I thought I was all savvy with this game and you come along and explode my brain.

This is the same reason I tried to get clarification on Night Beast's card text - every blogger on the first page of Google says move green, obtain focus token.

You are confusing 2 different parts of the game.

Once each turn, you can perform a focus action. The ONLY thing this does, is to give you a focus token (which you can spend later). When you do this, Recon specialist will give you a second token. At this point you have 2 tokens.

Later in the game (during the attack phase), you may spend a focus token. This is not a focus action, it is spending the token you gained from the action. As you have not performed the action, Recon Specialist will not activate at this point.

Night Beast's ability is "When you perform a green manouver, you may perform a free focus action." - This will give you a focus token (to spend later), but counts as having performed that action [so when you do your normal action after the movement, you can't perform another focus action].

How do you perform a focus action without using a token?

A focus action is the thing that places the focus token onto your ship. Spending a focus token is just spending a focus token, it isn't a focus action. So when you perform a focus action in your activation step (or as a free action some other way) you will add two focus tokens instead of one, which can then be spent like any other focus tokens and will be removes at the end of the turn.

I'm going to do my best impersonation of Professor Farnsworth from Futurama:

After a ship successfully completes it's maneuver, it may perform an action listed on it's action bar.

If a ship has recon specialist, and the ship performs a 'focus' action, it receives two tokens instead of one.

Infact if it was an action to use the token,Recon Specialist would be USELESS. You may only do each action once per turn (regardless of the source of the action) so while you would get the second token after spending the first, you could then not use the second one.

In the perform action phase you can ACTION FOCUS. This gives you a token to use in the combat phase. With the specialist when you perform ACTION FOCUS you gain an extra one.

Using a token DOES NOT count as performing an ACTION. It's USING a TOKEN.

Hope this helps. But might be worth rereading the manuel a few times

Action step is a part of the activation phase, located in this list:

1. Planning

2.Activation (includes action step)

3. Combat

4. End

There is normally no action step in the combat phase. Some rare pilots allow ships to take actions (Turr Phennir, after he shoots, or Airen Cracken, allowing a close buddy to take a free action after he shoots).
